Sinopsis

'Heaven Close' offers a profound exploration of mortality, presenting death not as a distant shadow but as an integral part of the living experience. Through a masterful blend of philosophical traditions, religious frameworks, and modern scientific research, the book examines how our understanding of death fundamentally shapes human behavior, social structures, and spiritual beliefs.

The author weaves together insights from thanatology, anthropology, and comparative religion to demonstrate how death awareness influences everything from artistic expression to social institutions. The book's unique approach lies in its systematic deconstruction of death anxiety, arguing that our fears stem not from death itself but from cultural conditioning and misunderstanding of death's natural role.

By examining historical perspectives across major civilizations and incorporating recent neurological research on near-death experiences, the work bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary science. Each chapter progresses logically, moving from theoretical concepts to practical applications, making complex ideas accessible through clear analogies and real-world examples.

This interdisciplinary exploration is structured around three core themes: death's universality across cultures, the psychological mechanisms behind death anxiety, and the paradoxical relationship between death awareness and life appreciation. The author maintains academic rigor while offering practical tools for developing a healthier relationship with mortality, including meditation practices and cognitive reframing techniques.

What sets this work apart is its balanced examination of controversial topics like consciousness after death, presenting multiple viewpoints while maintaining scientific objectivity.

Briarcliff Mansion and the land it occupies are owned by Emory University, which refers to it as its "Briarcliff Campus." Fortune and Folly, in part, illuminates the largely lost story of how the mansion, and the entire surrounding neighborhood, got its name. But in order to understand the mansion, we have to understand the man who built it.

Briarcliff Mansion once belonged to a man named Asa Candler, Jr.—also known as Buddie. The second son and namesake of Coca-Cola founder Asa Griggs Candler, Buddie was a wealthy real estate developer of great successes and greater failures. A man of big vision and bigger adventures, and a socialite whose boisterous, unapologetic personality made him both beloved and reviled in the Atlanta community. But after he passed away in 1953, his stories faded from memory, either tangled up with or overshadowed by his father.

It's no mystery why Briarcliff garners attention. It's self-consciously grandiose, built to display maximum grandeur to the neighborhood. It towers over the landscape, set far back from the road behind a filled-in, overgrown pool. Its face is stitched together where a music hall was added two years after the main house was completed, and the bricks don't quite match up. This book offers a deep-dive into the life of Asa Candler, Jr. to excavate a piece—and place—of Atlanta history.

Gibson’s previous book Opinel, starts and ends on the image of a workaday knife used by shepherds, peasants, and artists, using her sensitive and critical eye to explore family, culture, nature, and the world we inhabit. In Girl as Birch, Gibson turns her attention to the experience of growing up as a girl in the United States, coming of age while pushing against expectations for what a girl should be. The title poem uses the image of a birch tree to describe the pressure to bend to what others want:
Rebecca Kaiser Gibson is the author of Opinel (Bauhan Publishing, 2015) and two chapbooks, Admit the Peacock and Inside the Exhibition. She is the recipient of fellowships from MacDowell, The Heinrich Böll Cottage in Ireland, and the 2008 Fellowship in Poetry, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to teach poetry in Hyderabad, India, in 2011. She is founder and director of The Loom, Poetry in Harrisville, a poetry reading series. Her poems have appeared in The Adroit Journal; Agni; Field; The Greensboro Review; Green Mountain Review; The Harvard Review; The Massachusetts Review; Ocean State Review; Salamander; Slate; and been featured in VerseDaily. Rebecca lives in Marlborough, New Hampshire, and taught poetry at Tufts University for twenty-three years.
Praise for Girl as Birch: “Rebecca Kaiser Gibson’s Girl as Birch is a wonder of lyric compression and subtle music. At times deeply personal, at times nearly mythic, these poems meditate on the complexities of memory and mortality, the fact of the female body, and the lessons of the natural world, cultivated and wild. These are beautiful poems and I’ll return to them with great pleasure.”  ––Kevin Prufer, author of The Art of Fiction

The field of special education in 2022 has progressed to a point where we have ways to treat and support students with learning issues, and yet, we frame so much of the special education process from a deficit-based mindset. Even the word, "disability" supports this negative connotation of neurodiversity. This idea book outlines a paradigm for how to view and work with students with diagnoses formed through experience, research, and creativity in a way that supports an ability-forward mindset. Anyone who is parenting or teaching in the special education field would benefit from reading this book and using its ideas within the context of their practice.
