Sinopse

Social Label Shifts explores the profound impact of language on perceptions of disability and its implications for social inclusion. It examines how disability labels are not merely descriptive, but powerful social constructs that influence both individual identities and societal structures. The book highlights the cultural relativity of disability labels, demonstrating how terms like "disabled" or "handicapped" carry different connotations and social weight across various countries, affecting everything from stigma to the politics of identity. The book provides a historical overview of disability conceptualizations, contrasting the medical, social, and human rights models. It emphasizes the importance of adopting a rights-based approach to language, respecting the dignity of individuals with disabilities. Through comparative case studies and first-person narratives, the book analyzes how shifts in language impact self-perception and community participation, offering practical recommendations for promoting inclusive language in education, healthcare, and media. The book unfolds in three parts, beginning with the theory of social labeling, then moving to comparative case studies, and finally analyzing the socio-political dimensions of disability labeling. The book addresses controversies, such as person-first versus identity-first language, and is geared towards students, researchers, and policymakers interested in disability rights.

The story of how Toronto became a music mecca.

From Yonge Street to Yorkville to Queen West to College, the neighbourhoods that housed Toronto’s music scenes. Featuring Syrinx, Rough Trade, Martha and the Muffins, Fifth Column, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, Rheostatics, Ghetto Concept, LAL, Broken Social Scene, and more!

“Jonny Dovercourt, a tireless force in Toronto’s music scene, offers the widest-ranging view out there on how an Anglo-Saxon backwater terrified of people going to bars on Sundays transforms itself into a multicultural metropolis that raises up more than its share of beloved artists, from indie to hip-hop to the unclassifiable. His unique approach is to zoom in on the rooms where it’s happened – the live venues that come and too frequently go – as well as on the people who’ve devoted their lives and labours to collective creativity in a city that sometimes seems like it’d rather stick to banking. For locals, fans, and urban arts denizens anywhere, the essential Any Night of the Week is full of inspiration, discoveries, and cautionary tales.” —Carl Wilson, Slate music critic and author of Let’s Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste, one of Billboard’s ‘100 Greatest Music Books of All Time’

“Toronto has long been one of North America’s great music cities, but hasn’t got the same credit as L.A., Memphis, Nashville, and others. This book will go a long way towards proving Toronto’s place in the music universe.” —Alan Cross, host, the Ongoing History of New Music

“The sweaty, thunderous exhilaration of being in a packed club, in collective thrall to a killer band, extends across generations, platforms, and genre preferences. With this essential book, Jonny has created something that's not just a time capsule, but a time machine.” —Sarah Liss, author of Army of Lovers

When God drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, He placed a Cherubim and a Flaming Sword on the east side of the Garden of Eden to guard the way to the Tree of Life. The significance of the cherubim and the flaming sword still exists today. The song, 'Don't You Know' sung by Chey at the end of the sermon, gives the listener an opportunity to reflect on the sermon.

In virtually all fields of human endeavor, ancient Greece was so much at the forefront of dynamism and innovation that the products of its most brilliant minds remain not only influential but entirely relevant to this day. In the field of medicine, the great physician Hippocrates not only advanced the practical knowledge of human anatomy and caregiving but changed the entire face of the medical profession. The great philosophers of Athens, men like Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato, interrogated themselves with startling complexity about the nature of good and evil, questioned the existence of divinity, advocated intelligent design, and went so far as to argue that all life was composed of infinitesimal particles.
Although the school of philosophy started by Socrates and championed by Plato and Aristotle continues to be the most famous, other schools of thought began to branch, including the Epicureans and Cynics. In the 3rd century B.C., Stoicism arose in response to and under the influence of these older schools, combining many of the best theories from each into a more cohesive whole. With a greater flexibility and more practical application to everyday life, Stoicism quickly became a very popular school of thought, a growth made exponential by its introduction to the Romans.
Today, very few have heard of him, but he became a major philosophical and religious figure through the publication of his thoughts, travels, and miracles by Philostratus the Elder (c. 170-247 A.D.), written about a century after Apollonius of Tyana’s death. Philostratus the Elder’s works were based on the works of other writers (Maximus of Aegae, Damis, and Moeragenes), and miracles attributed to Apollonius were often compared to those of Jesus, who lived around the same time.
