Sinopsis

Catholics—both religious and the laity—made significant contributions to science, the arts, and the betterment of human life during the Enlightenment, the period between the Reformations and the modern world.Scholar Dominic A. Aquila writes that it is not uncommon for historical accounts of the time to conclude that the Church stood in the way of the scientific revolution and that faith and reason could not coexist. In The Church and the Age of Enlightenment (1648–1848), Aquila outlines Catholic contributions in mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, the arts, and politics, and highlights key figures of the era including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, St. Vincent de Paul, Queen Christina of Sweden, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.Aquila begins by looking back at the work of important figures such as Copernicus, Francis Bacon, and Galileo, all of whom died before the 1648. Aquila bookends the Enlightenment era by wars due to dynastic rivalries and social change—beginning with Europe’s Thirty Years War, which prompted a rethinking of religious and political practices, and ending with the Napoleonic Wars.Aquila also highlights key works of visual arts and music from the period, including Giovanni Bellini’s Frari Triptych, the world-renowned Oberammergau Passion Play, and George Fredric Handel’s Messiah. In this book, you will learn:the Church has been western civilization’s primary patron of art and science for centuries;Blaise Pascal believed that the Biblical revelation of God is the story of God’s action in human history;Isaac Newton was unique among the Enlightenment elite because he believed in God;the separation of Church and state was influenced by Catholic thinkers;Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson embodied Enlightenment ideals in the American colonies; andone of the most enduring outcomes of the Enlightenment is the heart-felt desire for continual improvement of life for more people.  Books in the Reclaiming Catholic History series, edited by Mike Aquilina and written by leading authors and historians, bring Church history to life, debunking the myths one era at a time.

With the publication of his two early works, Black Theology & Black Power (1969) and A Black Theology of Liberation (1970), James Cone emerged as one of the most creative and provocative theological voices in North America. His books offered a searing indictment of white theology and society and introduced a radical presentation of the Christian message of our time. Combining the visions of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., Cone radically reappraised Christianity from the perspective of the oppressed black community in North America. Fifty years later, his work retains its original power.

One day, I laid down in my son's bed and hit record in the voice messages app on my phone. I didn't really have a plan for what I was going to say or how the story would unfold, I just spoke. I did that again and again, one chapter at a time, for a few weeks, until this epic story was done, and my boys were hooked. And now we're working on Book 2! This is a book series that was inspired by my second son, Asher. In the 4th year of his epic little life, he took a liking to all things pirates. But one day, I offered him a bit of world-shattering information: pirates are bad (evil, criminal, selfish, etc). However, instead of feeling dismayed, Asher was very quick to inform me that he wasn't a bad pirate, he was "God's Pirate"... I dialogued with him a bit about what that meant and sure enough, the little guy had formed in his head a reality where God had a pirate who sailed the seas to evangelize to other pirates and do good deeds, not bad deeds. This God's Pirate seemed like a young Apostle Paul and the Robin Hood of the seas! So, this sweet little tale was born. Alas, recording began not long after with only that premise in mind and the name Asher Robin. Even the title wasn't worked out until I hit record! Of course, you'll probably notice some audio inserts, where I thought of what to say after recording. But for the most part, every chapter, every scene, every word was thought up on the spot during those wonderful evenings where my boys were sitting with eyes wide watching me as I told this story. Sometimes they cried, sometimes they protested plot developments (as you'll hear in the recording), but all the time, their interest was on what would happen next. You'll hear me stutter, yawn, and correct myself as I go. That's all part of this authentic journey, where a little pirate begins the Greatest Treasure Hunt. Three novellas that brilliantly portray English country and clergy life at the turn of the nineteenth century from the author of Middlemarch.   Initially appearing in Blackwood’s Magazine, this trio of linked stories comprises George Eliot’s first published work. Together they form a portrait of small-town life in Midlands, England, where changes are affecting both society at large and religious beliefs and institutions.   In “The Sad Fortunes of Reverend Amos Barton,” the clergyman struggles to raise funds for church repairs and perform his parochial duties, while a target of gossip—both good and bad. Meanwhile, few in Shepperton can find fault with his shy and hardworking wife, who cares for their six children, stretching Barton’s meager salary—and herself—to the limit.   Set before the arrival of Amos Barton, “Mr. Gilfil’s Love Story” features well-liked parish priest Maynard Gifil, who is known for smoking long pipes and preaching short sermons. Shockingly tumultuous events lead up to his marriage—including a love triangle, deception, and a murder plot.   An argument over religious doctrine splits the market town of Milby into two factions in “Janet’s Repentance.” With the arrival of Reverend Tryan, a rumor spreads that Evangelicalism has invaded the parish, angering local lawyer Robert Dempster. But his long-suffering wife finds in Tryan a kindred spirit, leading her to embark on a new life.  “The exquisite truth and delicacy, both of the humour and the pathos of those stories, I have never seen the like of.” —Charles Dickens “A first-rate novel, and its author takes rank at once among the masters of the art.” —The Times
