Summary

FOREWORD by David Cameron
Fleeing Idi Amin's regime, seventeen year-old Ugandan Indian immigrant Dolar Popat landed at Heathrow in 1971 with just £10 and a cardboard suitcase to his name but with everything to prove.
Fuelled by a tenacious entrepreneurial spirit, a sharp talent for finance and an unparalleled drive for success, Popat worked relentlessly to pay his gratitude to the country that offered him a fresh start: Great Britain. With this same passion, he tells the incredible story of his journey from Wimpy Bar waiter to business magnate to member of the House of Lords.
Despite battling prejudice, he found allies in the Conservative Party and, with guidance from David Cameron and his spiritual leader, Morari Bapu, has become one of the most influential people in commerce and politics today. Full of life lessons and business wisdom, A British Subject is a timely testament to the importance of integration in Britain.
A love letter to his adopted country, this is the inspirational tale of how the barefoot boy from the streets of Tororo now treads the corridors of Parliament.

Dick Cavett is back, sharing his reflections and reminiscences about Hollywood legends, American cultural icons, and the absurdities of everyday life.In Brief Encounters, the legendary talk show host Dick Cavett introduces us to the fascinating characters who have crossed his path, from James Gandolfini and John Lennon to Mel Brooks and Nora Ephron, enhancing our appreciation of their talent, their personalities, and their place in the pantheon. We tag along as Cavett spends an afternoon with Stan Laurel at his modest apartment in Los Angeles, spars with Muhammad Ali at his training camp, and comes to know a young Steve Jobs—who woos him to be Apple's first celebrity pitchman. He also offers piquant commentary on contemporary politics, the indignities of travel, the nature of comedy writing, and the utter improbability of being alive at all.
On his talk show, Cavett welcomed the leading figures from film, music, theater, literature, comedy, sports, and politics, and engaged them in conversation that made viewers feel that the discussion was taking place in their own living rooms. Jimmy Fallon, the new host of The Tonight Show, has called him "a legend and an inspiration" and has written a foreword that makes clear the debt that today's talk show hosts owe to Dick Cavett. Brief Encounters opens the door on how Cavett's mind works and what it is like to live in his world.
To spend a few minutes, or an hour, or even a whole evening with Dick Cavett is an experience not to be missed, and now there's no reason to deny yourself. Settle in, and enjoy the conversation!A Macmillan Audio production.

Born in war-torn China in 1942, Chi Fa was orphaned at the age of three. He was shuffled from relative to relative and sold to an abusive Communist village chief. At the age of nine, he was the caretaker for a mute epileptic. He briefly found a loving home as a kitchen helper to a nearly blind neighbor, only to lose this haven after nearly burning down her hut. Following a harrowing escape from China with his older brother, wife and son, Chi Fa found himself in a refugee camp and the provider of food for the entire family. Moving to Hong Kong, Chi Fa supported his family by begging, until an aunt helped them emigrate to Taiwan. Feeling betrayed by his older brother, in the autumn of 1955 he struck out on his own by joining the workforce. In 1969, he immigrated to the United States, following a dream he had had for 14 years.

Double Luck is filled with examples of how the human spirit can triumph over adversity. In the Chinese language, the word "crisis" is written with two symbols: one meaning "danger" and the other meaning "opportunity". Although Chi Fa's childhood was filled with crisis, he always looked for opportunity. His successful triumph over crisis after crisis is an inspiration for all who seek hope in the face of great challenges.

This is the story of the manufacture, development and usage of one of the most famous submachine Guns ever produced by a British Firm Designed at the end of WW2 it saw limited use on a trial basis, carried by paratroopers during the battle of Arnhem, but since the British Forces had plenty of Sten guns at the time, and tests between the two types of weapon were inconclusive, it was not until 1953, that with a few adjustments, the Weapon was formally adopted by the British Army Whilst not the most accurate of weapons, it was extremely useful in urban warfare and regarded as one of the most reliable submachine Guns throughout the world until it was withdrawn in 1988. A total of over 400,000 were manufactured. Sterling built them for the British armed forces and for overseas sales. The Sterling Guns was used as the basis for the weapons used by Storm Troopers in the Star Wars films.

Absorbing.” —Publishers Weekly  Tuscan Countess is a fast-paced and colorful exploration of the life of Matilda of Canossa (c. 1046–1115), a woman who loved a pope and was loved by him, successfully defied the Holy Roman Emperor, and changed the map of Europe. Her personal power was so extraordinary that even centuries after her death she became the first woman to be interred in St. Peter's Basilica. She is best remembered for her role in the conflict between the papacy and the Holy Roman emperor, the climax of which took place at her castle of Canossa. This unique biography is also a journal of the author's travels through contemporary Tuscany as she explores the palaces where Matilda held court, the blood-stained plains on which her soldiers battled, the churches and cathedrals she endowed, and the fortified aeries where she sought refuge. Readers will be swept along on this engrossing journey retracing the steps of a courageous and brilliant woman.
