Halfway into the 19th century, Spain's Catalonia underwent a sweeping transformation when it was thrust into not one, but 2 golden eras – the Renaixença and the Industrial Revolution. It was during this explosive period of creativity, thriving prosperity, and invigorated patriotism that a steadfastly nonconforming and fascinatingly eccentric icon was born, one that was about to take Catalonia by storm with his brilliant eye for unorthodox art and his legendary – or as some would say, notoriously – out-of-the-box ideas. Salvador Dalí, the celebrated surrealist, was one of many who would find a fount of inspiration in him, even once raving about the Sagrada Familia, the highlight of this icon's career: “Those who have not heard about the chromatic and shining essence of its color, the astonishing polyphony of its towers as organ pipes and shocked by its mutant naturalism, are traitors.” This icon in question, of course, is none other than what many now consider to be the patriarch of the Catalan Modernism movement: Antoni Gaudí. Across the pond, America’s most innovative and prolific architect was Frank Lloyd Wright, whose works are almost too vast and diverse to list. Recognized for designing unique churches and distinctive commercial buildings, and admired for his geometric style house designs, Wright has been widely imitated, and his work continues to influence architecture not only in the United States but around the world. Laymen often think they know the definition of “a Frank Lloyd Wright,” but they probably don’t fully understand the brilliant mind of the man, nor the intricacies of his Prairie Style. Yet it endures because he has made it so, and in many ways, Wright’s architectural career has overshadowed other aspects of his life.Ver livro
The discovery of Mapungubwe in the early 20th century marked a turning point in the understanding of Southern Africa’s ancient civilizations. Hidden for centuries, this once-thriving kingdom remained unknown to the modern world until 1933, when a group of researchers stumbled upon its ruins on Mapungubwe Hill in present-day South Africa. What they uncovered would challenge colonial-era narratives and reshape the history of African state formation. Archaeological excavations at the site revealed an advanced society that flourished between the 11th and 13th centuries. The remains of elaborate stone structures, pottery, and intricate gold artifacts painted a picture of a powerful kingdom with a sophisticated political and economic system. Among the most significant discoveries was the famous Golden Rhino, a small yet exquisitely crafted artifact that symbolized the wealth and status of Mapungubwe’s elite. Made from delicate sheets of gold carefully shaped around a wooden core, the rhino became an enduring emblem of the kingdom’s prosperity. The site also yielded evidence of a complex social hierarchy. The ruling class resided atop Mapungubwe Hill, separated from the common people who lived in the surrounding lowlands. This physical division suggested a structured society where power was centralized, a departure from earlier African settlements where leadership was more communal. The arrangement of dwellings, burial sites, and ceremonial areas further confirmed that Mapungubwe had developed into a true kingdom with a distinct ruling elite.Ver livro
Show Time is a true story which found its roots in the answer to the question, 'how did the author get into tattooing', which she fielded from almost every person that she met. The book travels the backroads of Europe in the 1980s and 90s as a young woman chronicles her relentless determination to find scraps of information, loopholes and chinks in the armor of the male-dominated secretive world of tattooing where females were not welcome or encouraged. Eventually she makes her way to a place on the wild and colorful international rollercoaster that was the evolution of tattooing as an artform during that time and becomes one of Europe's trailblazing, award-winning female tattoo artists. The book follows the rise of the popularity of tattoo art during the 1990s and its transition from the shadows into the mainstream of modern culture pre internet and social media. Written for a wider audience, Show Time provides an inside look at the shadowy ways of the tattoo Old School and gives the reader an understanding of the process of tattooing from the professional side.Ver livro
Designer, activist, and educator Cheryl D. Holmes-Miller is legendary for her decades of scholarship and advocacy, and as a touchstone and conscience for the design profession. In HERE: Where the Black Designers Are, Holmes-Miller documents the history of—and answers to—the question she has been asking for decades: “Where are the Black designers?” Holmes-Miller explores this essential question through the lens of her own development as a designer and leader, beginning with her own family and its rich multiethnic history. She narrates her experiences as a design student at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and Pratt Institute, leading up to her oft-cited Pratt thesis examining barriers to success for Black designers. Holmes-Miller describes the work of her eponymous studio for noted clients that included NASA, Time Inc., and the nascent Black Entertainment Television (BET), as well as the story of her later critiques of the industry in Print magazine and other design publications. Holmes-Miller also recounts the parallel history of collective efforts by fellow scholars and advocates over the past fifty years to identify and celebrate Black designers. HERE is part memoir, part historical investigation, and an urgent call for justice and recognition for Black designers. “This book is representative of the shoulders on which we, as Black graphic designers, stand. These are the legacies we are fighting to uphold and the torches we must continue to carry. The journey of the Black designer has not been easy. It isn’t easy. And while we may be left out of history books, this is a reminder that we are here. Always have been. Always will be.”—Tré Seals, Vocal TypeVer livro

A one-of-a-kind collection including some never-before-seen photographs of the wild and unforgettable WHA from legendary sports photographer Steve Babineau On October 12, 1972, legendary Boston sports photographer, Steve Babineau, was in attendance for the debut of the New England Whalers. They were taking on the Philadelphia Blazers at the old Boston Garden — and Babs was shooting the action. Fifty years later, he’s still photographing big-league sports events — but this lovingly curated collection documents both his earliest published (and unseen) works and the wild emergence of the colorful, revolutionary, wild, and unforgettable WHA. In an era when rolls of film still had to be changed by hand and cameras were focused manually, when arena lighting was questionable and images had to be captured through the haze produced by smoking fans, Babineau captured it all: the timeless legends who were finally getting paid, the journeymen who finally got a shot at the pros, the 17-year-old who would go on to rewrite record books, the brawls and goals, the glorious ’staches and flows, the highs and the lows … Behind the Lens: The World Hockey Association 50 Years Later has the Golden Jet and the Howes, the teams that seemed to change names and cities as often as some players changed wooden sticks, and even the true origin story of that Wayne Gretzky photo that’s become the million-dollar holy grail for sports card collectors.Ver livro
