Summary

A mysterious hospital deep in the Oregon woods is sending marauding ambulances into the countryside, looking for new patients. Mowing down anything in their path, the deadly ambulance drivers have forced the people and animals of the land into hiding. Twelve-year-old Chloe Ashton has returned to Fairfax and is desperate to find her mother. Together with her friends—the magical cook Mrs. Goodweather, carpenter Brisco Knot, and clever white rat Shakespeare—she hatches a plan to enter the hospital and stop the bloodshed. At the same time a rumor reaches them from the east: Silas the Stargazer is coming, and he is bringing an army. An animal army.

Introducing Violet Mackerel, a charismatic new chapter book star with a zest for life and an endearing, relatable voice akin to Ramona Quimby and Junie B. Jones. Violet is a seven-year-old with a knack for appreciating the smallest things in life: her “Theory of Finding Small Things” states that the moment of finding a tiny treasure usually coincides with the moment of having a genius idea. This creative little girl always strives to think outside the box, so when she spots a small china bird that she desperately wants, she forms an imaginative plan for getting it—and her methods are anything but ordinary!     Violet Mackerel’s Brilliant Plot is the first book in an irresistibly charming series starring Violet and her family that has pitch-perfect perspective and plenty of laugh-out-loud humor.

“This timeless tale will leave readers suffused with the pleasure of seeing gifts received and appreciated.” –Kirkus Reviews, starred review   Here is the classic tale of elfin magic, loved by generations of children and made new by an artist of international acclaim. Jim LaMarche's stunningly rendered paintings, reminiscent of his earlier work in The Rainbabies, are the perfect complement to this favorite Grimm fairy tale. Plus, this is a fixed format version of the book, which looks nearly identical to the print version!   “LaMarche sets every picture glowing, whether with lamplight, starlight, shafts of morning sunlight or just some inner light that all the characters in this kindliest of tales seem to possess.” —The Washington Post   “Children and adults alike will enjoy the story, beautifully realized in the beguiling artwork.” —Booklist   “The drawing seems so realistic that viewers will be tempted to reach out and touch the duo's little pointed ears.” —Publishers Weekly   “Luminous.” —School Library Journal

Let's talk about KINDNESS! What does it mean to be kind? Kids will learn the importance of being kind, compassionate, caring, friendly, loving, and respectful of people's differences. In our first story, kids will visit the “Land of Mermaids” and find out what happens with the littlest mermaid doesn't look like any of the other mermaids. There are so many ways to be kind throughout the day, like holding the door open for the person walking behind you. Or, writing a note, or drawing a picture, to give it to someone just because you want to brighten their day. This audiobook gives many wonderful examples of showing kindness and encourages children to make a list of their own ideas. Stories and a fun song “Say ‘Please' and ‘Thank You,'” will encourage children to think about ways to be kind. Remember. . . In a world where you can be anything….BE KIND!
