Sinopse

“An account of the author’s first operational tour as an RAF navigator . . . in support of the Korean War and the Malayan Emergency.”—Pennant Magazine   This is the first book to give a detailed, first-hand account of post-World War II RAF Short Sunderland operations in the Far East. Derek K. Empson was a navigator with 88 Squadron and later 205 Squadron, flying operations during the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency and many other operations. He was based at Seletar in Singapore, Kaitak in Hong Kong, Iwakuni near Hiroshima and various other operational bases throughout his two-and-a-half-year tour.   The Sunderland flying boat was a unique aircraft in that each crew was allotted an aircraft which became their floating and airborne home. Among Empson’s noteworthy events is a return flight from Singapore to Hong Kong across 1,400 miles of ocean with a VIP passenger, his first operational flight as a 21 year old Pilot Officer navigator. He then undertakes an operation involving a return trip to Scotland which took three months. On moving to Kiatak, the Sunderlands provided air cover for search and rescue operations, taking off and landing amongst the port’s many small and erratically steered shipping craft. He flew sixty-one missions in support of the United Nations forces fighting in and around Korea, enduring the threat of Chinese fighters over the Yellow Sea. In one operation an engine fire caused the crew to ditch in the Tsushima Strait with serious structural failure and they were rescued by the USS De Haven, a US destroyer.   This is a worthy record of some of the legendary Short Sunderland’s final roles in the RAF.

The Story behind 50 million TikTok Views"When Russia invaded my country, Ukraine, my parents, my dog and I fled to a bomb shelter that seemed more than bizarre to me. And because there was WiFi and the days were damn long and also boring, I posted videos to introduce my new home – some of them even went around the world. But my story is actually quite different: It's that of a young girl full of big dreams, who wanted to discover the world and thought war was a bad joke. Until the day I realised I was in the middle of the biggest nightmare of my life."

Valeria decided to show the world her hometown Chernihiv and tell the real stories – images and events which none of us could have imagined could have taken place in the 21st century in the middle of Europe.
And the horror does not end with her escape to Milan. Once there, Putin's bombs catch up with her and hit her right in the heart of her family. This is her story of bombs, evacuation, live, death and things that only make sense if you have to live in a bomb shelter.
"It is horrible when you hear bombs, but you can't do anything – you are just a toy."

Sometime between 1610 and 1611, William Shakespeare wrote The Tempest. The idea for the play came from the real-life shipwreck in 1609 of the Sea Venture, which was caught in a hurricane and grounded on the coast of Bermuda during a voyage to resupply England's troubled colony at Jamestown, in present-day Virginia.A lesser known passenger was Stephen Hopkins. During the ten months the Sea Venture passengers were marooned on Bermuda, Hopkins was charged with trying to incite a mutiny and condemned to die, only to have his sentence commuted moments before it was to be carried out. In 1620, Hopkins signed on to another colonial venture, joining a group of religious radicals on the Mayflower. The Pilgrims encountered their own tempest, a furor that started when they anchored off Cape Cod and lasted for their first twelve months in the New World. Disease and sickness stole nearly half their number, and their first contacts with the indigenous Americans were contentious. The entire enterprise hung in the balance, and it was during these trials that Hopkins became one of the expedition's leaders, playing a vital role in bridging the divide of suspicion between the English immigrants and their native neighbors.

"A fierce and lively book. . . .This is one of those rare books that could make people think about their intimate lives in a new way." — New York Times Book Review “A rousing defense of imprudent ardor and romantic excess. . . . It’s difficult to deny that [Nehring] is on to something.” — Wall Street JournalA thinking person’s “guide” that makes the case for love in an age both cynical about and fearful of strong passion. Bold and challenging, A Vindication of Love has inspired praise and controversy, and brilliantly reinvigorated the romance debate. A perfect choice for readers of Alain de Botton’s How Proust Can Change Your Life and Pierre Bayard’s How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read.
