Where The Ideas for which We Stand came from.In this incisively drawn book, Darren Staloff forcefully reminds us that America owes its guiding political traditions to three Founding Fathers whose lives embodied the collision of Europe's grand Enlightenment project with the birth of the nation.Alexander Hamilton, the worldly New Yorker; John Adams, the curmudgeonly Yankee; Thomas Jefferson, the visionary Virginia squire—each governed their public lives by Enlightenment principles, and for each their relationship to the politics of Enlightenment was transformed by the struggle for American independence. Repeated humiliation on America's battlefields banished Hamilton's youthful idealism, leaving him a disciple of Enlightened realpolitik and the nation's leading exponent of modern statecraft. After ten years in Europe's diplomatic trenches, Adams's embrace of the politics of Enlightenment became increasingly skeptical in spirit, and his public posture became increasingly that of the gadfly of his country. And Jefferson's frustrations as a Revolutionary governor in Virginia led him to go beyond his Enlightened worldview, and articulate a new and radical Romantic politics of principle. As a consequence, Americans demand a government that is both modern, constrained by checks and balances, and capable of appealing to our loftiest aspirations while adhering to decidedly pragmatic policies.

Book Summary of "Zero to One" by Peter Thiel; Blake MastersZero To One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Futureby Peter Thiel; Blake MastersABOUT THIS AUDIOBOOK SUMMARY:The book, "Zero to One" was inspired by a collection of lectures delivered by Peter Thiel during his teaching years at Stanford. Along with co-author (and former student) Blake Masters — Thiel has put together a hard-hitting set of standards for entrepreneurs, startups, and thought-leaders to carefully consider when building the “next big thing” of the future.Quite frankly, certain sections of the book are so ridiculously well put together that one just sits there and thinks after reading them. Chapter after chapter, Thiel gives example after example of how to successfully build the future. But Why Listen To Thiel? Well, Peter Thiel has played a role in partnering with, inspiring and/or investing in some of the most successful tech entrepreneurs in the United States (and probably the world) including:Elon Musk – who founded SpaceX and co-founded Tesla Motors;Reid Hoffman – who co-founded LinkedIn;Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim – who together founded YouTube;Jeremy Stoppelman and Russel Simmons – who founded Yelp;David Sacks – who co-founded Yammer; andHimself, Peter Thiel – who founded PayPal and Palantir.Oh, and by the way — all of the above named companies are worth at least $1 billion each. That’s a serious chunk of change. Reading Zero To One is sort of like taking a peek into the mind of one of the most successful multi-billionaire investors alive today… In these FlashNotes, we’ll get into the top 10-12 key take-aways from the book, including:- The “DOs and DON’Ts” of startups- What to focus on when building a startup- Insights on building a billion dollar startup that stands the test of time- And much, much more...

The United States was once the hope of the world, a beacon of freedom, and the defender of liberal democracy. Nations and peoples on all continents looked to America to stand up for the values that created the Western world, and to oppose autocracy and repression. Even when America did not live up to its ideals, it still recognized their importance, at home and abroad. But as Bernard-Henri Levy lays bare in this powerful and disturbing analysis of the world today, America is retreating from its traditional leadership role, and in its place have come five ambitious powers, former empires eager to assert their primacy and influence. Levy shows how these five — Russia, China, Turkey, Iran, and Sunni radical Islamism — are taking steps to undermine the liberal values that have been a hallmark of Western civilization. The Empire and the Five Kings is a cri de coeur that draws upon lessons from history and the eternal touchstones of human culture to reveal the stakes facing the West as America retreats from its leadership role, a process that did not begin with Donald Trump's presidency and is not likely to end with him. The crisis is one whose roots can be found as far back as antiquity and whose resolution will require the West to find a new way forward if its principles and values are to survive.

Baer’s biography of the former Czechoslovak Foreign Minister Vladimír Clementis (1902–1952) is the first historical study on the Communist politician who was executed with Rudolf Slánský and other top Communist Party members after the show trial of 1952. Born in Tisovec, Central Slovakia, Clementis studied law at Charles University in Prague in the 1920s and had his own law firm in Bratislava in the 1930s. After the Munich Agreement of 1938, he went into exile to France and Great Britain, where he worked at the Czechoslovak broadcast at the BBC for the exile government of Edvard Beneš. After the Second World War, Clementis’ political career at the Czechoslovak Foreign Ministry blossomed: In 1945, he became Assistant Secretary of State under Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk. After Masaryk’s mysterious death in 1948, Clementis was appointed Foreign Minister.

This biography offers an unprecedented insight into the mind of a Slovak leftist intellectual of the interwar generation who died at the command of the comrade he had admired since his youth: Generalissimus Stalin.

This comprehensive history examines more than a century of politics and protests from centennial garment workers to millennials with megaphones.   As the major industrial center of the Midwest, Chicago provided a welcome home for Socialism in America. The city provided a soapbox for firebrand speechmaking, a home for political exiles, and a springboard for activism. When Josephine Conger-Kaneko began printing The Socialist Woman in 1909 and then ran for alderwoman in 1914, she could appeal to an audience and an electorate sympathetic to the Socialist Party in unprecedented numbers.   But Chicago was also a stronghold of mercantile and political interests that were strongly opposed to the Socialist Party. As a result, the city frequently served as a pressure cooker for the nation’s economic and ideological tension. That tension boiled over in incidents like the 1886 Haymarket Riot, the 1894 Pullman Strike, and the 1919 Race Riots. And that same tension continues to dictate the terms of engagement for contemporary protest movements and labor disputes.

In the final year of the Trump presidency, America’s borders were within reach of being completely secure as the daily arrests had dwindled to the lowest numbers in United States Border Patrol history. Nations south of our border, which once violated America’s sovereignty and blatantly disrespected it, now adhered to our strong president who forced those nations to heel and show America respect. On January 20, 2021, everything changed. Since his inauguration, President Biden has intentionally destroyed the American immigration system through the manipulation of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policies and laws. Never before in American history has our nation been invaded by millions of foreigners—all with the encouragement and direct assistance of the American government. The once proud Border Patrol has been forced to participate in the unlawful smuggling of millions of illegal aliens to their final destinations across America. Morale within the DHS does not exist. Within the first two years of Biden’s presidency, over five million illegal aliens have been arrested, with over 85% of the five million fraudulently released into our nation. Another ten million have absconded undetected because hundreds of miles of the southern border are open without a single Border Patrol Agent actively patrolling. Our nation faces a crisis created by both political parties that, if left to continue as it is, will destroy America from within.
