Summary

The posthumous memoirs of a World War II Pathfinder pilot and Distinguished Flying Cross recipient who flew target-marking missions in enemy territory.   Denys A. Braithwaite was born of a well-to-do Yorkshire family and joined the Auxiliary Air Force on his eighteenth birthday in 1939. On the occasion of Chamberlain’s speech to the British nation on September 3, the situation changed dramatically and from being a “super weekend club,” his squadron was assigned coastal patrol duties. In October he was posted to Peterborough to learn to fly with the regular RAF. There followed a period of convoy protection flying Blenheims and then flying with the meteorological flight based at Bircham Newington on the Norfolk coast. Here he flew a Gloster Gladiator with a flight that had the reputation of “flying even when the birds wouldn’t.”   Now a Squadron Leader, Braithwaite became acquainted with the legendary de Havilland Mosquito and flew long-range weather reconnaissance flights (PAMPA) under the control of Coastal Command. These patrols involved a lone aircraft flying deep into enemy territory to observe the meteorological conditions in advance of bombing raids or naval action. PAMPA Flight 1409 moved to Oakington and transferred to Bomber Command and operated under the command of Air Commodore Donald Bennett and became one of the elite Pathfinder units. Braithwaite’s lengthy and successful tour included many exciting episodes described here in thrilling detail.   After being transferred to the United States, Braithwaite was posted to India where he contracted a tropical disease that ended his flying career. The recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Braithwaite died before being able to see his memoirs in print.

Annie Oakley was without a doubt the greatest markswoman who ever lived. Born in 1860 in Darke County, Ohio, she built herself from obscure and impoverished beginnings into the best known woman of her time.Courtney Ryley Cooper's classic biography traces Oakley's extraordinary journey and separates the facts from the many legends that have sprung up in its wake. We learn of her enduring marriage to Frank Butler and their first meeting, a shooting match in which the seemingly delicate young girl defeated the professional marksman; her association with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show and its triumphal tour through Europe and America; the train crash that nearly took her life; and her years as an actress and teacher. Her story remains to this day one of the grandest to have come out of the Old West.

Written while she was still a teenager, My Brilliant Career catapulted young Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin (writing as Miles Franklin) into worldwide fame. In fact, the sudden popularity of the book in Australia (and the perceived closeness of the plot to her own family history) caused Franklin to withdraw the book from publication until after her death. The story centers on Sybylla Melvyn, a headstrong girl growing up in rural Australia whose family is plunged into debt by their alcoholic father. Young Sybylla's story follows her romance with suitor Harold Beecham, her forced servitude to one of her father's creditors and her attempts to become a famous writer. Long hailed as one of the most popular and celebrated works in Australian literary history, My Brilliant Career is presented here in its original and unabridged format.

Summary of Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton is a sprawling biography of one of the most important figures in American history. It is based on copious original research, especially into Hamilton’s early years. As a political theorist, a polemicist, and the first Treasury secretary, Hamilton dedicated his life, his intellect, and a seemingly limitless stream of words to the cause of unifying and strengthening the United States. He did perhaps more than any other one person to ensure the strength of the American union, even as his pride and hot-headedness kept him from the presidency and led to his early death.
Hamilton claimed to have been born on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies, probably in 1755. Orphaned and illegitimate, Hamilton had perhaps the least advantageous childhood of all the founders. He apprenticed as a clerk with merchant trader Thomas Stevens, a man who may have been his biological father…

A collection of confessional, hilarious, heartbreaking notes written anonymously on a public typewriter for fans of PostSecret and Other People's Love Letters.
When Michael Gustafson and his wife Hilary opened Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor, Michigan, they put out a typewriter for anyone to use. They had no idea what to expect. Would people ask metaphysical questions? Write mean things? Pour their souls onto the page? Yes, no, and did they ever.
Every day, people of all ages sit down at the public typewriter. Children perch atop grandparents' knees, both sets of hands hovering above the metal keys: I LOVE YOU. Others walk in alone on Friday nights and confess their hopes: I will find someone someday. And some leave funny asides for the next person who sits down: I dislike people, misanthropes, irony, and ellipses ... and lists too.
In Notes from a Public Typewriter Michael and designer Oliver Uberti have combined their favorite notes with essays to create an ode to community and the written word that will surprise, delight, and inspire.
