  The Shangri LaTitudes of the title are not some imaginary abodes in the clouds, above and beyond ordinary reality. These latitudes are the ones which lie where the paths of Truth and Beauty cross, forming quadrants where each sub-subject comingles to form fresh ruminations, not unlike those from Rumi, not unlike Four Quartets by Eliot, though using forms unfamiliar to either poet. There are four rooms in the human heart, each one its own experiential zone where passions move around, up down and around within the stream of consciousness, as well as stirring the subconsciousness. Perhaps the latter ruminations form the greater portion of the poems in this selection. This is a book of brief poems deliberately constructed for easy reading, brief pieces that can be picked up and put down within a few moments. One or two poems may take longer to digest, but hopefully the same intensity of feeling will be there, like a bonsai arriving at your coffee table, all trim, newly in flower.

  A baby is born in 1666, the year of "Fire Horse" according to Japanese tradition, at the House of Metzengerstein in an area between Royal Hungary and the territory inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons. Frederick von Metzengerstein is nurtured by his dependable servant Bela after the Baroness passes away shortly after giving birth to him. The youngster lives a pleasant life for many years until his ailing father Baron Gotfrid is forced to negotiate the future of the region with his mortal rival Baron Willhelm von Berlifitzing. Frederick experiences a nightmare inside that castle, which haunts him for years until his father's passing, at which point the young master assumes ultimate power at the age of 17. During the celebratory ceremonies for the transition of power, Baron Berlifizing dies as a result of a fire that started in the House of Berlifitzing at their stables. By some strange coincidence, that same night, a black stallion, a proper wild beast, is captured by the guards close to the Metzengerstein property. The boy falls in love with the gorgeous animal at first sight, which alteres his fate and mental state. The secret that was eating him alive since he was an infant needs to be revealed sooner than later... 
  The new version of this Edgar Allan Poe tale follows closely the events in the original, with countless added historic elements and details, not mentioned by Poe, but still in his spirit. It can speak to the modern reader or draw in new audience to the works of the great author and poet, since it is now "dirtier", sadder, more dramatic, and feels extremely realistic. The bonus features in this book are directly tied to the narrative, and the graphics will provide a glimpse into the worlds that the stories describe.

  Chattering at School: Nature...

  "Chattering at School" is a series of animal poems that invites the reader to learn and marvel at all the wonders of the natural world. The poems include fun narratives on the surface, while containing learning and teaching moments as the poems unfold. The book has lovely illustrations and is full of moral lessons. 
  The introduction to Chattering at School: Nature poems for children explains that these poems were written by a schoolboy aged 11 to 18 (1951-58) during his annual summer holiday visits to his grandmother on her small farm in Ireland. She had been his carer and guardian from the time of the German Blitz of London where he was born, and lived with her until the war ended in 1945. He then returned to his unknown parents, who had been unable to visit him in Ireland from the UK during the war. 
  Over 60 years later, the author of these poems - Edward Forde Hickey - discovered them (his own schoolboy attempts at writing poetry) lying in the attic and felt they were worth recording publicly.
