Summary

'Terrific and enthralling' New Scientist
Fifty years ago, in July 1969, Apollo 11 became the first manned mission to land on the Moon, and Neil Armstrong the first man to step on to its surface. He and his crewmates, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, were the latest men to risk their lives in this extraordinary scientific, engineering and human venture that would come to define the era.

In Apollo 11: The Inside Story, David Whitehouse reveals the true drama behind the mission, putting it in the context of the wider space race and telling the story in the words of those who took part – based around exclusive interviews with the key players.

This enthralling book takes us from the early rocket pioneers to the shock America received from the Soviets' launch of the first satellite, Sputnik; from the race to put the first person into space to the iconic Apollo 11 landing and beyond, to the agonising drama of the Apollo 13 disaster and the eventual winding-up of the Apollo program.

Here is the story as told by the crew of Apollo 11 and the many others who shared in their monumental endeavour. Astronauts, engineers, politicians, NASA officials, Soviet rivals – all tell their own story of a great moment of human achievement.

This “heartbreaking biography” of the Communist revolutionary “is filled with high drama,” daring escapes, and eventual imprisonment in Nazi Germany (Publishers Weekly).

A German-born Jew, Olga Benario was one of the most remarkable Communist activists of the twentieth century. With a genius for organization and an unwavering devotion, she crisscrossed the globe educating and activating legions to combat the worldwide plagues of Nazism and fascism. At the age of nineteen, she masterminded a daring prison raid to free her lover, the Communist intellectual Otto Braun. Together they escaped to Moscow, where they quickly rose in the ranks of the international Communist movement.

At twenty-six, Benario was chosen to serve as bodyguard to the legendary Brazilian guerrilla leader Luis Carlos Prestes, who had been brought to Moscow for training and would soon become her new lover. Traveling under assumed names, they crossed Europe and North America to reach Brazil, where Prestes would launch a revolution against the fascist regime. But tragically, within months, they were seized by police.

From Brazil, Olga, then seven months pregnant, was deported to Nazi Germany. She was subsequently sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, and in February 1942 she was sent to her death in the gas chambers at Bernburg.

Cleopatra was arguably the most famous Queen of ancient history. She was a combination of a Greek lineage, an Egyptian culture and a Roman influence. She was probably the most featured queen in arts, drama and literature in both oriental and western cultures. She is often portrayed as a woman who made use of her physical beauty to control and manipulate others. However, her true power was in her intellectual and strategic abilities.

Long before the world began seeking STEM -- science, technology, engineering, and mathematics -- education for girls, American Maria Mitchell proved that women were capable of achieving worldwide acclaim for brilliant reasoning and discoveries. Born in Nantucket in 1818 to a Quaker family, Mitchell had opportunities unavailable to other girls of the time. The Quakers believed boys and girls should be educated, so Maria attended public schools. She also had the benefit of her father's tutelage. At an early age, she loved to perform the complex navigational computations requested by sailors.

At the age of 29, Mitchell discovered a comet and earned a gold medal from the King of Denmark, the first of many international awards and
honors in her illustrious life. She was one of the first women elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and later became the first Professor of Astronomy at the newly-built Vassar College. Throughout her long teaching career, she urged her students to question everything. If a man could achieve success at a venture, so could a woman.

Forthright and rebellious by nature, Mitchell was beloved by her students. She was a strong proponent of women's rights, traveled widely in the US and Europe, and met with other notable scientists of the time.

This audiobook was produced to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Maria Mitchell's birth and bring her legacy to a new generation.

We especially need imagination in science. It is not all mathematics nor all logic; it is somewhat beauty and poetry.

This is the fourth volume of Dr. Justin Glenn’s comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential line” of the Washingtons. Volume One began with the immigrant John Washington, who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and became the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It continued the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Volume Two highlighted notable members of the next eight generations of John and Anne Washington’s descendants, including General George S. Patton, author Shelby Foote, and actor Lee Marvin. Volume Three traced the ancestry of the early Virginia members of this “Presidential Branch” back in time to the aristocracy and nobility of England and continental Europe. Volume Four resumes the family history where Volume One ended. It presents Generation Eight of the immigrant John Washington’s descendants, containing nearly 7,000 descendants. Future volumes will trace generations nine through fifteen, making a total of over 63,000 descendants. Although structured in a genealogical format for the sake of clarity, this is no bare bones genealogy but a true family history with over 1,200 detailed biographical narratives. These in turn strive to convey the greatness of the family that produced not only The Father of His Country but many others, great and humble, who struggled to build that country. Volume Four, Part One covers the descendants of the immigrant John Washington’s child Lawrence Washington. Volume Four, Part Two covers the descendants of the Immigrant’s children John Washington, Jr., and Anne (Washington) Wright.
