Summary

An anthology of stories from American servicemembers in Iraq and Afghanistan from the military blog launched by the creator of Doonesbury.

In 2006, Gary Trudeau launched The Sandbox, an online forum where service members in could share their stories with readers at home. In hundreds of compelling posts, soldiers wrote movingly of their day-to-day lives, of their mission, and of the drama that unfolds daily around them.

A dog adopts a unit on patrol in Baghdad and guards its flank; a soldier chronicles an epic day of close-call encounters with IEDs; an Afghan translator talks earnestly with his American friend about love and theology; a dad far from home meditates on time and history in the desert night under ancient stars; a Chuck Norris action figure witnesses surreal moments of humor in the cramped cab of a Humvee.

"The Egg and I" took first America by storm in 1945, selling over 1,000,000 within ten months of it's original publication. Betty MacDonald's first book about her adventures as a young wife on a chicken farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state was a breath of fresh air to a world that, in the wake of WWII, sorely needed it. Betty lived with her first husband near Chimacum, Washington - a newlywed doing her best to adjust to and help operate their small chicken farm, from 1927 to 1931. MacDonald was a keen observer of the people around her, and she calls a spade a spade, "and there were a plenty of spades." The Egg and I was adapted for stage, radio and screen, with the movie version starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray. The movie version also introduced the world to Ma and Pa Kettle, the eccentric country bumpkins portrayed by the inimitable Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride, who were so popular that a string of spin-off movies was made about their adventures. Betty MacDonald wrote three other memoirs, as well as the still popular Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle series for children, and is recognized by many as an important America humorist. In her MA thesis, The Egg and Us: Contextualization and Historicization (2014), Samantha Hoekstra writes:"Some scholars credit MacDonald with having inspired Shirley Jackson, Erma Bombeck, and other purveyors of domestic humor, but perhaps the most appropriate inheritor of the MacDonald tradition is the contemporary writer David Sedaris. ... One of the most significant similarities is that the lack of conventionality in both families is presented as normal and worthy of respect. Even as they make fun of their families’ foibles, the authors convey an undeniable warmth, affection, and acceptance. In a sense, they challenge the very notion of a ‘normal’ American family." This is why MacDonald's writing is still relevant and funny today.

If you care about the future of American democracy, you must mark this book as "must read". Dark Money on top of its awesome title, offers an in-depth analysis of the current political/economic status of the United States of America. It mainly focuses on the economic inequality that has overwhelmed the country and the negligent decisions disregarding the environment's well-being.

"Without the rigorous peer-reviewed standards previewed by prestigious academic publications, the Olin Foundation was able to inject into the mainstream a number of works whose scholarship was debatable at best." — Jane Mayer
In Dark Money, Jane Mayer debunks a common belief about the reason behind the economic and political state of the country. With a large amount of evidence, she showed how a network of incredibly wealthy people played a big role on bending the American political system to their will. At the end of the book, you will learn a large array of things you thought you knew and learn so much about politics and economics along the way.

From a Pulitzer Prize–winning presidential historian, “Leadership should help us raise our expectations of our national leaders, our country and ourselves” (The Washington Post).

Doris Kearns Goodwin draws upon the four presidents she has studied most closely—Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson—to show how they recognized leadership qualities within themselves and were recognized as leaders by others. By looking back to their first entries into public life, we encounter them at a time when their paths were filled with confusion, fear, and hope.

Leadership tells the story of how they all collided with dramatic reversals that disrupted their lives and threatened to shatter forever their ambitions. Nonetheless, they all emerged ready to confront the dilemmas of their times. At their best, all four were guided by a sense of moral purpose. At moments of great challenge, they were able to summon their talents to enlarge the opportunities and lives of others. Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader?

    “Inspiring.” —Christian Science Monitor

“Insightful, readable, compelling.” —The Boston Globe.

It was the 1930s, at the height of the Great Depression and the dawn of the Nazi party’s ascendance to power, and the school had never been able to beat the Ivy League teams, but coach Al Ulbrickson had big ambitions—he just needed the right athletes.   Over the next few years, the boys of the UW rowing team endured grueling days of training and countless setbacks. In the end, it was their collective dedication that brought them to compete in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin—and beat the team rowing for Adolf Hitler.   A New York Times bestseller and the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of ’36, Daniel James Brown’s The Boys in the Boat is a celebration of the human spirit and a compelling biography of a unique rowing team that brought home Olympic gold.   The summary and analysis in this ebook are intended to complement your reading experience and bring you closer to a great work of nonfiction.
