Sinopse

This biography of the WWII flying ace recounts his legendary career in the RAF, his time as a POW and his postwar life as a beloved public figure. One of the most famous fighter pilots of the Second World War, Basil Gerald “Stapme” Stapleton achieved flying ace status in the Battle of Britain and was immortalized in Richard Hillary’s classic wartime memoir The Last Enemy. Born in Durban, South Africa, Stapleton joined the Royal Air Force in 1939 and flew Spitfires with 603 Squadron. His legendary escapades during the Battle of Britain account for nearly twenty enemy aircraft destroyed, probably destroyed or damaged. Stapleton later became flight commander of 257 Squadron and a gunnery instructor at RAF Kenley and Central Gunnery School, Catfoss. He returned to combat in 1944, flying Typhoons as commander of 247 Squadron. For his courageous combat during the Battle of Arnhem, he received the Dutch Flying Cross. In December of 1944, he was forced to land inside German lines and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Stalag Luft I on the Baltic coast. Nicknamed 'Stapme' after a phrase used in his favorite cartoon 'Just Jake', Stapleton was a larger-than-life character who became a beloved public figure in his postwar life. With his handlebar mustache and good-humored bravado, he became for many the quintessential ace fighter pilot. In this authoritative and intimate volume, Stapleton tells his full story to historian David Ross, author of the acclaimed biography Richard Hillary.

“This curiously moving history . . . traces the development of collections since the Renaissance through lively portraits of famous collectors.” —The New Yorker   From amassing sacred relics to collecting celebrity memorabilia, the impulse to hoard has gripped humankind throughout the centuries. But what is it that drives people to possess objects that have no conceivable use? To Have and To Hold is a captivating tour of collectors and their treasures from medieval times to the present, from a cabinet containing unicorn horns and a Tsar's collection of teeth to the macabre art of embalmer Dr. Frederick Ruysch, the fabled castle of William Randolph Hearst, and the truly preoccupied men who stockpile food wrappers and plastic cups. An engrossing story of the collector as bridegroom, deliriously, obsessively happy, wed to his possessions, till death do us part.   “Wry history . . . Blom’s formidable research is an example of the collector’s art in itself.” —The New York Times Book Review   “An admirable attempt to chart the history of an obsession.” —Publishers Weekly   “An impressive, wide-ranging book.” —Christopher Tayler, Sunday Telegraph   “Blom's literary cabinet is full of pungent biographies.” —Times Literary Supplement   “Provocative, stimulating and entertaining . . . Huge questions are thrown up . . . on every page of the book, but it is also full of jokes, unusual and very welcome in a work of such impressive scholarship and elegance of style . . . a sparkling, discursive, and eclectic book.” —Independent on Sunday   “Throughout these well-documented stories, Blom probes the heart and soul of collecting's appeal . . . .An intellectual journey worth taking.” —Booklist

Since the temple embodies all of divine life on a macrocosmic scale, it reflects the sublime qualities of divine regions in the physical world. The soaring columns of the temple’s hypostyle Hall, which leads celebrants into the environment of the Neteru, embody the sacred marshes of time.
Auxiliary chambers and the Hall of Records in the temple reflect the majestic halls of the Duat. The divine genealogy of royal persons and thus humanity was recorded here. Additionally, the sacred mound on which the ancients rested at the dawn of time is in the temple’s sanctuary. In this sanctuary lies the naos where the Neter rests.

In November 1941, Hitler ordered German forces to complete the final drive on the Soviet capital, now less than 100 kilometers away. Army Group Center was pressed into the attack for one last attempt to break Soviet resistance before the onset of winter. From the German perspective, the final drive on Moscow had all the ingredients of a dramatic final battle in the east, which, according to previous accounts, only failed at the gates of Moscow. David Stahel challenges this well-established narrative by demonstrating that the last German offensive of 1941 was a forlorn effort, undermined by operational weakness and poor logistics and driven forward by what he identifies as National Socialist military thinking. With unparalleled research from previously undocumented army files and soldiers' letters, Stahel takes a fresh look at the battle for Moscow, which even before the Soviet winter offensive, threatened disaster for Germany's war in the east.
