Sinopse

This heart-warming and inspiring story follows the journey of David, a working-class lad from Lakemba who, despite getting into mischief and facing life's many challenges, emerged on the other side stronger than ever.

From moments like coaching an under-nines soccer team alongside his manager Jack – who told concerned parents, "If you have any complaints, come to me, not David. I've had injuries to my spine, and my surgeon warned me, 'Operating on you could make you a quadriplegic, David.' Yet his prediction that the pain would ease every ten years has been spot on. Today, it's nothing" – to dealing with setbacks like buying a courier run from Nu Way Transport Newcastle, only to return from Christmas holidays to find the factory burned down by an arsonist, David's life has been a rollercoaster.

After starting his own courier business, sometimes earning as little as five dollars a day, and navigating the ups and downs of the Australian mining boom, David spent 14 years travelling for months at a time before retiring at fifty-nine to Atlantis on the Gold Coast.

However, retirement brought a new challenge: bowel cancer. After being 21 months cancer-free, the disease returned and spread to his lungs – stage four. Yet, through it all, David's resilience has never wavered. This is more than just his story; it's an inspiration to cancer sufferers and a testament to the power of perseverance in the face of life's toughest battles.

In Ten Bridges I've Burnt, Brontez Purnell—the bard of the underloved and overlooked—turns his gaze inward. A storyteller with a musical eye for the absurdity of his own existence, he is peerless in his ability to find the levity within the stormiest of crises. Here, in his first collection of genre-defying verse, Purnell reflects on his peripatetic life, whose ups and downs have nothing on the turmoil within. "The most high-risk homosexual behavior I engage in," Purnell writes, "is simply existing."

The thirty-eight autobiographical pieces pulsing in Ten Bridges I've Burnt find Purnell at his no-holds-barred best. He remembers a vicious brawl he participated in at a poetry conference and reckons with packaging his trauma for TV writers' rooms; wrestles with the curses, and gifts, passed down from generations of family members; and chronicles, with breathless verve, a list of hell-raising misadventures and sexcapades. Through it all, he muses on everything from love and loneliness to capitalism and Blackness to jogging and the ethics of art, always with unpredictable clarity and movement.

With the same balance of wit and wisdom that made 100 Boyfriends a sensation, Purnell unleashes another collection of boundary-pushing writing with Ten Bridges I've Burnt, a book as original and thrilling as the author himself.

Fisher creates a wide-ranging, whimsical, and profound miscellany of food that moves readers from A (for dining alone) to Z (zakuski, the classic accompaniments to a shot of Russian vodka), traversing a broad swath of human history, taste, and sensation along the way. Fisher’s mercurial, searching prose and her inimitable sense of the unique and idiosyncratic aspects of our daily fare are on radiant display in this abecedary of flavor, sense, and history.A Macmillan Audio production from North Point Press

The Missing Years - The Real...

Everyone knows Jesus. Or thinks they do.
The Gospels give us a birth, a single scene at age twelve, then silence — until a man emerges at the Jordan River at roughly thirty years old to begin a ministry that would reshape human history. What happened in between? How did a carpenter's son from an obscure Galilean village develop the wisdom that still challenges humanity two thousand years later?
The Missing Years presents a year-by-year account of those hidden decades.
Here is the Jesus who:Lost his father at fourteen and became the sole support of a large familyTraveled the Roman world — from Alexandria to Athens to Rome to Carthage — studying humanity across cultures while preparing for what lay aheadTurned down wealth and a marriage proposal to stay true to a mission he was still discoveringSpent solitary weeks on Mount Hermon in the spiritual reckoning that prepared him for everything that followed
He laughs. He grieves. He grows. This is not the distant Jesus of religious art — this is a man fully alive in the world, forging himself in it, across nearly two decades before anyone was watching.
There is something quietly powerful in this account: if Jesus spent eighteen years in obscurity before his calling found its moment, then perhaps your own quiet season has meaning too.
What this book is and isn't:
This is not speculative fiction or imaginative reconstruction. Every detail rests on source material that is fully disclosed within the book. Readers are invited to engage with the narrative on its own terms first — evaluating its internal coherence, psychological authenticity, and explanatory power — before turning to questions of sourcing.
This is not academic theology, denominational doctrine, or a retelling of familiar Gospel stories. It is a readable, deeply human biography of a figure the Gospels left largely unexplained.

    HP LOVECRAFT

Howard Phillips Lovecraft is among the greatest American masters of fantasy and the supernatural.
Born in 1890, a native of Providence, Rhode Island, his health was uncertain from childhood and he led a sheltered early life. His semi-invalidism enabled him to read omnivorously, and as a shy imaginative child he began to invent what would in his adult life become a whole macabre fantastic world of his own, peopled by creatures out of his own weird imagination.
As an adult he was retiring, almost a recluse. Tall, thin and pale, but with bright alert eyes, he was much given to wandering his native city in the dark hours of the night, and he became a devoted student of its antiquities.
Although he began to write early he had nothing published until he was in his twenties. He set many of his stories around the imaginary town of Arkham, and invented an entire mythology of his own, its core being the demoniac cult of Cthulhu, based on the lore or legend that the world was at one time inhabited by another race who, in practising black magic, lost their foothold or were expelled, yet live on outside, ever ready to take possession of this earth again.
Since his early death in 1937 his stories have continued to attract attention and praise from an ever-growing audience.
