Sinopsis

AUDIENCE:

People with disabilities who want to apply for or appeal the denial of Social Security Disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

Families of persons with disabilities.

Lawyers who don't practice Social Security disability regularly.

REASONS TO BUY THIS NEW EDITION:

Each year almost three million Americans apply for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration. 70% of these applicants are turned down and must appeal to get benefits.

This book was written by a former chief medical consultant for Social Security who decided thousands of benefit claims.

The author translates Social Security’s 200+ medical listings into plain-English so that readers can figure out what they need to prove their disability.

This latest edition contains new benefit amounts and income limits for 2019 as well as important changes to Social Security’s medical listings on respiratory, neurological, and mental illnesses, with discussions of how applicants can get benefits for these and other conditions.

The new edition will cover any changes to the SSDI and SSI programs made in 2017. The White House budget for 2018 proposal includes new return-to-work programs, a reduction of retroactive SSDI benefits from 12 months to 6 months, the reinstatement of the reconsideration stage (the first stage of appeal) in all states, a reduction in benefits for families with more than one SSI recipient, an elimination of workers' comp reserve offsets in all states, and a bar against simultaneously collecting unemployment benefits and disability payments.

Today, we are at a turning point as we face ecological and political crises that are rooted in conflicts over the land itself. But these problems can be solved if we draw on elements of our tradition that move us toward a new commonwealth-a community founded on the well-being of all people and the natural world.
From the coalfields of Appalachia and the tobacco fields of the Carolinas to the public lands of the West, Jedediah Purdy-one of our finest writers and leading environmental thinkers-shows how the land has always united and divided Americans, holding us in common projects and fates but also separating us into insiders and outsiders, owners and dependents, workers and bosses. Expropriated from Native Americans and transformed by slave labor, the same land that represents a history of racism and exploitation could, in the face of environmental catastrophe, bind us together in relationships of reciprocity and mutual responsibility.
This may seem idealistic in our polarized time, but we are at a historical fork in the road, and if we do not make efforts now to move toward a commonwealth, Purdy warns, environmental and political pressures will create harsher and crueler conflicts-between citizens, between countries, and between humans and the rest of the world.

This “fantastic story” of one of physics’ great riddles takes us through centuries of scientific history (Simon Lamb, author of Devil in the Mountain).   Why do compass needles point north—but not quite north? What guides the migration of birds, whales, and fish across the world’s oceans? How is Earth able to sustain life under an onslaught of solar wind and cosmic radiation? For centuries, the world’s great scientists have grappled with these questions, all rooted in the same phenomenon: Earth’s magnetism.   Over two thousand years after the invention of the compass, Einstein called the source of Earth’s magnetic field one of greatest unsolved mysteries of physics. Here, for the first time, is the complete history of the quest to understand the planet’s attractive pull—from the ancient Greeks’ fascination with lodestone to the geological discovery that the North Pole has not always been in the North—and to the astonishing modern conclusions that finally revealed the true source.   Richly illustrated and skillfully told, North Pole, South Pole unfolds the human story behind the science: that of the inquisitive, persevering, and often dissenting thinkers who unlocked the secrets at our planet’s core.   “In recent years, many very good books for interested non-scientists have been published: Richard Dawkins’s Climbing Mount Improbable and The Ancestor’s Tale, Stephen Jay Gould’s The Lying Stones of Marrakech, and Dava Sobel’s Longitude and The Planets, to name some of them. North Pole, South Pole . . . is a worthy addition to that list . . . Turner has a great story to tell, and she tells it well.” —The Press (New Zealand)
