Sinopse

The backlash against poor language teaching has produced a rash of full-blown grammar books, but this uncomplicated and amusing user’s manual concentrates on the essentials. GOOD ENGLISH hacks away at the tangled thicket of confusions while never becoming a dull grammar lesson. Ideal for any English speaker uneasy about handling full-stops, commas and the dreaded apostrophe, it highlights the most common problems and solves them with style and a smile. GOOD ENGLISH has proved itself popular with universities and colleges, who have ordered it in considerable numbers. It will quickly convince you that mastering the basics of the language is simplicity itself – after all, you've been speaking it since childhood!

Best of the Best - Engagement...

The Best of the Best series brings together for the first time the most influential voices in education in a format that is concise, insightful and accessible for teachers. Keeping up with the latest and best ideas in education can be a challenge as can putting them into practice but this highly acclaimed series is here to help. Each title features a comprehensive collection of brief and accessible contributions from some of the most eminent names in education from around the world.
In this third volume, Wallace and Kirkman explore the core concept of engagement an essential facet of effective learning both for learners and for teachers and share practical, realistic, cross-curricular and cross-phase strategies to make the most of these important insights.
Engagement, whether of the teacher or the learners, can't be compelled and will always be contingent on the complexities of motivation. Indeed, it could be argued that it is teacher engagement which is the key to successful learning. Such engagement can be facilitated by encouraging professional dialogue between staff, or it may be that the school's high expectations alone could encourage in its teachers a sense of professional empowerment. But how do we recognise learner engagement, and what can we do to encourage it? From this compendium of expert voices emerge three important themes: that teachers' engagement and positive example should be seen as a prerequisite for establishing learner motivation; that learners' interest needs to be actively engaged, whether by meaningful challenge or by tapping into their natural curiosity; and that an expectation of appropriate behaviour must precede expectations of engagement. In this volume you will find many practical suggestions of ways to apply these ideas both in the classroom and in the staffroom.
Each contributor has provided a list of further reading so you can dig deeper into the topic and, in addition, the Teacher Development Trust offer their advice on how to plan effective CPD and responsive changes to practice based on the contributors' suggestions.
    Contributions include:
Sir Tim Brighouse argues that it is teacher engagement specifically their collaborative evaluation, dialogue and planning which is the key to successful learning.
Dr Bill Rogers advocates a non-confrontational approach and illustrates how the teacher's verbal communications can be more effective when they are descriptive and assertive rather than imperative and confrontational.
Vic Goddard suggests that a bottom-up, staff-led approach to CPD can be a more motivating catalyst for teacher engagement than that which is top-down and senior leadership team-led.
Sue Cowley urges teachers to be responsive, adaptable, creative and flexible in the classroom and, instead of focusing on what students need to change, to take control of their teaching and decide what they need to change about themselves.
Richard Gerver discusses his passionate belief that teachers and school leaders should trust in their profession and their children more and build a culture that shouts about an assumption of excellence.
Andy Cope advises that teachers should focus on how they wish 'to be' in order to achieve the energy and empowerment to engage more effectively with their 'to do' list.
Professor Bill Lucas focuses on the numerous ways that schools can encourage parental engagement in their children's learning.
Ian Gilbert points out that in order to encourage engaged behaviour we need first to banish classroom boredom, and that the opposite of 'boring' in a learning context should be 'challenging'.
Professor Susan Wallace focuses on teacher behaviour, suggesting that one of the most powerful ways of encouraging engagement is for the teacher to model the desired attitude by presenting themselves as enthusiastic and highly motivated.

This book contains two topics, which are the following:1 - Memory Improvement: The ability for the brain to encode, store, and recall information is known as memory. Experience serves as a roadmap for future action.Memory includes both consciously recalled facts and experienced details as well as deeply embedded knowledge that pops up without thought or even awareness. It serves as both a temporary information storage space and a more lasting record of what has been learned.2 - The study of the anatomy and operation of the nervous system and the brain is known as neuroscience. To map the brain mechanistically, neuroscientists draw on cellular and molecular biology, anatomy and physiology, human behavior and cognition, and other fields. Each neuron, or brain cell, in an adult human has an estimated 100 billion connections to other neurons. The mapping of all the cell-to-cell communication networks—the brain circuits that process all ideas, feelings, and behaviors—remains one of the major difficulties of contemporary neuroscience. The resulting image that gradually forms is referred described as "the connectome." All learning is based on the brain's capacity to build new neural circuits and connections, or neuroplasticity.

    What if everything you knew...

If you feel a bit cross at the presumption of some oik daring to suggest everything you know about education might be wrong, please take it with a pinch of salt. What if everything you knew about education was wrong? is just a title. Of course, you probably think a great many things that aren't wrong. The aim of the book is to help you 'murder your darlings'. David Didau will question your most deeply held assumptions about teaching and learning, expose them to the fiery eye of reason and see if they can still walk in a straight line after the experience. It seems reasonable to suggest that only if a theory or approach can withstand the fiercest scrutiny should it be encouraged in classrooms. David makes no apologies for this; why wouldn't you be sceptical of what you're told and what you think you know? As educated professionals, we ought to strive to assemble a more accurate, informed or at least considered understanding of the world around us. Here, David shares with you some tools to help you question your assumptions and assist you in picking through what you believe. He will stew findings from the shiny white laboratories of cognitive psychology, stir in a generous dash of classroom research and serve up a side order of experience and observation. Whether you spit it out or lap it up matters not. If you come out the other end having vigorously and violently disagreed with him, you'll at least have had to think hard about what you believe. The book draws on research from the field of cognitive science to expertly analyse some of the unexamined meta-beliefs in education. In Part 1; 'Why we're wrong', David dismantles what we think we know; examining cognitive traps and biases, assumptions, gut feelings and the problem of evidence. Part 2 delves deeper - 'Through the threshold' - looking at progress, liminality and threshold concepts, the science of learning, and the difference between novices and experts. In Part 3, David asks us the question 'What could we do differently?' and offers some considered insights into spacing and interleaving, the testing effect, the generation effect, reducing feedback and why difficult is desirable. While Part 4 challenges us to consider 'What else might we be getting wrong?'; cogitating formative assessment, lesson observation, grit and growth, differentiation, praise, motivation and creativity.
