  The language of Poetry is an art that most of us attempt at some point in our lives.  Although its commonplace exposure has been somewhat marginalised in today’s often fast-paced lives we all recognise good verse that can empathise with our thoughts or open us up to experience new things in new ways, to better understand and to enjoy the many strands of our lives. 
  But finding a starting point can be overwhelming, even off-putting, so in this series we offer up our Top 10 classic poets, who brim with talent and verse, on a range of subjects and themes that we can all enjoy. 
  In the vast landmass of North America lie huge bodies of water that are called lakes but act as inland seas, vital waterways of communication and commerce.  Around these agéd waters some of its greatest poets have waxed lyrically on both the times and everything around them.

  Do Jewish Lives Matter? - A Play

  The play, “Do Jewish Lives Matter” arose out of the Crown Heights Riot in Brooklyn, a Pogrom where a Black boy was accidentally killed by a Hasidic driver with devastating results. James Baldwin, the famous Negro writer, as far back as 1948 wrote, “Georgia has the Negro as a target of hatred. Harlem has the Jew.” 
   In 1973 Rabbi Kahane wrote, “In no way should we refuse to see the danger to Jews that comes from Black hatred. It is of epidemic proportions.” And again in 1977, when addressing an audience, he said, “In Crown Heights, where poor Jews live side by side with Blacks and are regularly robbed, mugged, terrorized, a Black explosion against them is inevitable.”

  Sadie McCarney’s Your Therapist Says It’s Magical Thinking is a buoyant second collection that playfully navigates the turbulent waters of life with mental illness and neurodivergence. In much of the book, history and science are treated the way they are often viewed by a brain in mental turmoil: places and events get switched around, facts get rewritten, and the fantastical reigns supreme. Through poems ranging from didactic (the horrible “self-care” advice received by the poet when she was struggling most) to historical fiction (patients in an asylum in 1800s England), to the quirky and unexpectedly fantastical (a rainbow carpool unicorn, a young child’s timeline reversing each morning, and an everything bagel that includes competing theories of time), McCarney digs deep into the muck of her own lived experience. She resurfaces with, if not gold, at least an old time capsule and a few treasured hunks of bone. Your Therapist Says It’s Magical Thinking highlights the sometimes dubious (but always jubilant) inner workings of a mentally unwell brain at play — especially within the context of a larger society that frequently seeks to tamp down this weird and rare form of magic.

  What do we expect of an author who is unapologetically female? What do we expect of consuming art in general? Should a work be easy, should a work be safe? 
   
  Marylyn Tan’s debut volume, GAZE BACK, complicates ideas of femininity, queerness, and the occult. The feminine grotesque subverts the restrictions placed upon the feminine body to be attractive and its subjection to notions of the ideal. The occultic counterpoint to organised religion, then, becomes a way toward techniques of empowering the marginalised. 
   
  GAZE BACK, ultimately, is an instruction book, a grimoire, a call to insurrection—to wrest power back from the social structures that serve to restrict, control and distribute it amongst those few privileged above the disenfranchised.
