Sinopse

In this book there are 28 stories that seek to understand the human condition in most sensitive and sincere form, mixing reality and fiction.Excerpt from the book:My fullness refers to the least of things. It is a continuous not to understand. This is what for now I can define what it would be like to feel fulfilled, complete, full in all possible ways. I think I can do even more: maybe reaching this point is not possible, and we, poor mortals, delude ourselves into everyday epiphanies, searching for the impossible. No, not so impossible, I can say that today, yes, this afternoon I reached a fullness, a mental rest that made me feel nothing, not thinking about anything, deserving my own silence. Feeling of accomplishment, at the same time knowing that everything around me may not be as I always wanted, but for this moment everything was ready. That's right, I felt ready this afternoon.Excerpt from the preface to the book:'As in the texts of other authors of this early century, one of the marks of these reports is the refusal to fit into crystallized genres. As an attentive reader of the writer Clarice Lispector – who in several texts seems to be present as inspiration, as a resonance or as an inheritance – the author knows that gender cannot “take” these writing exercises, texts that are intended to be in motion. (...) Another point that we must realize when entering this field of fiction by Danilo França is the very delicate way in which the writer manages the words. The descriptions are meticulous, but the most important thing is to understand how the author manages in short narrative spaces to shift our gaze to smaller elements.'Luiz LopesPh.D. in Literary StudiesAbout the authorDanilo França is a teacher, researcher and artist. A groundbreaking voice in contemporary Latin American literature, María Fernanda Ampuero's writing is "raw and savage" as she confronts machismo, inequity, and violence in this acclaimed short story collection (Vistazo). An undocumented woman answers a job posting only to find herself held hostage, a group of outcasts obsess over boys drowned while surfing, and an unhappy couple finds themselves trapped in a terrifying maze. With scalpel-like precision, Ampuero considers the price paid by those on the margins so that the elite might lounge comfortably, considering themselves safe in their homes.Simultaneously terrifying and exquisite, Human Sacrifices is "tropical gothic" at its finest—decay and oppression underlie our humid and hostile world, where working-class women and children are consistently the weakest links in a capitalist economy. Against this backdrop of corrosion and rot, these twelve stories contemplate the nature of exploitation and abuse, illuminating the realities of those society consumes for its own pitiless ends.Contains mature themes.

The stories in Here Until August follow the fates of characters who, by choice or by force, are traveling beyond the boundaries of their known worlds. These are people who move with the seasons. We meet them negotiating reluctant or cowardly departures, navigating uncertain returns, or biding the disquieting calm that so often precedes moments of decisive action.
In one story, an agoraphobic French émigré compulsively watches disturbing footage from the other side of the world as she attempts to keep a dog named Chavez out of trouble. In another, a young couple weather the interiority of a Montreal winter, more attuned to the illicit goings-on of their neighbors than to their own hazy, unfolding futures. Other stories play out against the fictional counterparts of iconic Australian and American locales, places that are recognizable but set just beyond the brink of familiarity: flooded townships and distant islands, sunlit woodlands or paths made bright by ice, places of unpredictable access and spaces scrubbed from maps.
From the Catskills to New South Wales, from the remote and abandoned island outports of Newfoundland to the sprawl of a North American metropolis, these transformative stories show how the places where we choose to live our lives can just as easily turn us inward as outward.
