Sinopse

A highly entertaining, carefully researched novel, set through the end of the XVIII and the beginning of the XIX century in Europe. A story inspired by true events in which the main character leads us on a journey from Paris to Saint Petersburg. He travels by road, leaving behind the political chaos of the French Revolution and after his adventure in Tsarist St Petersburg, he returns home through the Baltic and the North Sea. This arduous journey takes weeks where the unforeseen, the danger, the curiosity, the exploration of the old cities, and the variety of engaging fellow travelers, pave his way to new friendships and emerging possibilities. This elegant mix of Champagne and Vodka results in a sparkling historical novel. Beautifully and sensitively written, this utterly engaging and effervescent literary creation captures the atmosphere of this turbulent time in French and European history.Danièle Gourdon is French. After finishing secondary school in Paris, she completed her studies at the University of Amsterdam with a master’s degree in literature. She lived for sixteen years in English speaking countries, mainly England, East and West Africa and finally established a business school in the Netherlands where she set contracts with firms like Phillips, L’Oréal, Lucent and others, providing language training, interpreting and translation services. She has already published three books. The second one, “Bibo” an ecological guide for Erasmus students, was published in 2020 by the University of Alicante and is written in Spanish, English, French and Dutch. She currently divides her life between Paris and Spain.

For a simple janitor, Forrest Franklin is a pretty smart guy. He has just landed himself a new job…at a woman’s health clinic! This dirty-minded fella figures he’ll just keep his eyes open and maybe catch a glimpse of a cute young lady in a johnnie once in a while. That sure would keep him whistling while he works!

Well, as sweet luck would have it, this hard-working pervert is about to get way more than he bargained for when one of the doctors, the less-than-ethical Marty Thompson, asks for Forrest’s help—right in the exam room! And all Forrest has to do in exchange for that naughty privilege is a bit of handyman work at the doc’s house. Forrest is on cloud nine, helping the doctor out with all kinds of intimate and embarrassing examinations.

In this story of sinful humiliation, Forrest is handed the blessing of a lifetime when Dr. Thompson phones from his yacht and invites him to fill in for him for a house call. But this isn’t just any house call. The woman who’s in need of intimate medical care just happens to be the wife of the minister at Forrest’s church! Holy honeypot!

Well, Forrest’s prayers are answered—Linda reluctantly agrees to the exam and even more reluctantly removes her clothes. But now, Forrest has another problem: He doesn’t know what in God’s name he’s doing! Well, thanks to the miracle of Skype—and an intimately positioned cellphone—Dr. Thompson is called, and he is able to make an accurate diagnosis…

But not before poor Linda is put through the most hideously humiliating medical experience imaginable and is left shivering, red-faced… And surprisingly aroused!

Not Without Laughter is drawn in part from the author's own recollections of youth and early manhood. This stirring coming-of-age tale unfolds in 1930s rural Kansas. A poignant portrait of African-American family life in the early twentieth century, it follows the story of young Sandy Rogers as he grows from a boy to a man. We meet Sandy's mother, Annjee, who works as a housekeeper for a wealthy white family; his strong-willed grandmother, Hager; Jimboy, Sandy's father, who travels the country looking for work; Aunt Tempy, the social climber; and Aunt Harriet, the blues singer who has turned away from her faith.

A fascinating chronicle of a family's joys and hardships, Not Without Laughter is a vivid exploration of growing up and growing strong in a racially divided society. A rich and important work, it masterfully echoes the black American experience.

The American dream is dead, and Los Angeles is burning. Stoned and porn-addicted surfer Baxter Kent is terrified of women and anxious to make things work with a sex robot. Acid junkie Arden Coover has a useless philosophy degree and a doomed relationship he believes might save him. His younger sister Tess is considering, or resisting, a convenient but loveless marriage to a wealthy, narcissistic novelist. Ryland Richter, an alcoholic insurance executive with too much money and too few scruples, is seeking toxic solace in the arms of a dangerously unhinged subordinate. As wildfires rage, this lost and hopeless cast makes their way through the embers of Los Angeles and beyond in a desperate search for meaning and connection in a world without a future. Chandler Morrison' s latest satire explores our search for love in all the wrong places, and what happens when we think we find it.
