Sinopse

In "The History and Legends of Lenâpé," Daniel G. Brinton masterfully intertwines historical analysis with the rich tapestry of folklore and oral traditions of the Lenape people. This comprehensive work not only elucidates the social, political, and cultural dynamics of the Lenape tribe prior to European contact but also engages with the myths that shaped their worldview. Brinton's methodical narrative employs a blend of anthropological insight and linguistic scholarship, situating the Lenape within a broader historical framework that includes colonial interactions and the consequential transformations of their society. Daniel G. Brinton, a prominent 19th-century scholar and one of the earliest advocates for native rights, dedicated his life to the study of Indigenous American cultures. His extensive background in philology and anthropology, coupled with an empathetic understanding of Native American issues, drives this work's urgent and respectful portrayal of Lenape identity. Brinton's commitment to preserving Indigenous narratives reflects a broader intellectual movement of his time, as he sought to counteract the prevailing European-centric perspectives. This book is essential for anyone interested in Indigenous studies, American history, and the intersections of culture and conflict. Brinton's detailed research and respectful retelling of Lenape legends provide profound insights into their rich heritage. Readers will not only gain knowledge of Lenape history but also appreciate the depth of the human experience captured within these stories. It is a resonant call to understand and honor the legacies of the past.

    Getting China Wrong

The West's strategy of engagement with China has failed. More than three decades of trade and investment with the advanced democracies have left that country far richer and stronger than it would otherwise have been. But growth and development have not caused China's rulers to relax their grip on political power, abandon their mercantilist economic policies, or accept the rules and norms of the existing international system. To the contrary: China today is more repressive at home, more aggressive abroad, and more obviously intent on establishing itself as the world's preponderant power than at any time since the death of Chairman Mao. What went wrong?

Put simply, the democracies underestimated the resilience, resourcefulness, and ruthlessness of the Chinese Communist Party. For far too long, the United States and its allies failed to take seriously the Party's unwavering determination to crush opposition, build national power, and fulfill its ideological and geopolitical ambitions. In this powerfully argued study, Friedberg identifies the assumptions underpinning engagement, describes the counterstrategy that China's Communist Party rulers devised in order to exploit the West's openness while defeating its plans, and explains what the democracies must do now if they wish to preserve their prosperity, protect their security, and defend their common values.

Our ability to find meaning in things is one of the most important aspects of human life. But it is also one of the most mysterious. Where does meaning come from? What sorts of things have meaning? And how do we grasp the meaning others want to convey? Meaning: A Very Short Introduction is shaped by exploring possible answers to these questions.

Human societies have one particularly important device for expressing and sharing meaning: language. Since our words are paradigm examples of things which have meaning, in this book, Emma Borg and Sarah Fisher use meaning in language as a case study for exploring meaning more generally. They focus on three possible sources for word meaning: things in the world, things in the mind, and social practices, exploring the key approaches thinkers have put forward in each of these arenas. Finally, they end by looking at some concrete applications of the ideas and approaches introduced in the book.

The United States of English -...

The story of how English became American—and how it became Southern, Bostonian, Californian, African American, Chicano, elite, working-class, urban, rural, and everything in between

By the time of the Revolution, the English that Americans spoke was recognizably different from the British variety. Americans added dozens of new words to the language, either borrowed from Native Americans (raccoon, persimmon, caucus) or created from repurposed English (backwoods, cane brake, salt lick). Americans had their own pronunciations (bath rhymed with hat, not hot) and their own spelling (honor, not honour), not to mention a host of new expressions that grew out of the American landscape and culture (blaze a trail, back track, pull up stakes). Americans even invented their own slang, like stiff as a ringbolt to mean drunk. American English has continued to grow and change ever since.

The United States of English tells the engrossing tale of how the American language evolved over four hundred years, explaining both how and why it changed and which parts of the "mother tongue" it preserved (I guess was heard in the British countryside long before it became a typical Americanism). Plentiful examples of the American vernacular, past and present, bring the language to life and make for an engaging as well as enlightening listen.
