Sinopse

Cruelty does not exist as a distant or abstract force, somehow detached from the daily lives of human beings. On the contrary, cruelty resides quietly within each individual, hidden beneath the polished masks people wear and cleverly concealed behind noble emotions, pleasant words, and seemingly good intentions.

In his groundbreaking book, The Anatomy of Cruelty: The Darkest Things Humans Do and Why They Do, the author boldly ventures into these shadowy realms and systematically uncovers the psychological roots that underlie human behavior. With remarkable honesty and thoroughness, he reveals the subtle presence of cruelty in betrayal, manipulation, abandonment, lies, and numerous invisible crimes politely disguised by charming smiles and socially acceptable behavior.

Unlike other works that simply compile dark examples from the fringes of humanity, this book presents cruelty as something innate and ever-present in all individuals-a driving force fueled by fear, selfishness, insecurity, and an unconscious desire for dominance and power. Drawing on personal stories as well as genuine introspection and self-awareness, the author deftly demonstrates the reality of cruelty even within the closest, most intimate relationships-relationships that can unexpectedly shift from trust and kindness to pain, betrayal, and exploitation.

Yet an extraordinary paradox emerges from this courageous and honest journey: by deeply understanding and openly acknowledging the roots of cruelty, readers are not overwhelmed by despair, but find clarity, strength, and liberation. True wisdom, courage, and honesty diminish the influence of cruelty and transform personal wounds into sources of resilience, empowerment, and profound insight.

Written in direct, powerful, and accessible language, The Anatomy of Cruelty invites readers everywhere to courageously explore their inner world, honestly reflect on uncomfortable truths in their souls, and confront the hidden darkness that resides within all human beings. Those readers who willingly embark on this journey can ultimately achieve authentic personal power and experience true freedom - finally able to rise above illusion and transformed by a deep, powerful understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Freedom of the press isn’t just a fundamental right in America but a key part of the democratic process. When the United States secured its independence against Britain in the War of Independence in 1783, there was no certainty about what the new country would look like in terms of national governance. In 1787, delegates from the various states convened in Philadelphia to draft a constitution that would define this.
Freedom of the press became one of the core principles of democracy in the United States. People could only place their votes in an informed way if the press was free to provide information about politicians and their actions. Politicians must also know that their actions were accountable through a press that informed voters honestly and accurately.
Up to the 1960s, most Americans were confident they had access to a truly free press, but then series of revelations emerged that suggested the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had been subverting journalists in the US and elsewhere through the use of bribery, blackmail, and covert operations. By the late 1970s, this alleged CIA plan had a name: Operation Mockingbird.
Many people were understandably horrified at the notion that the federal government had attempted to operate counter to the First Amendment through one of its intelligence agencies, and Operation Mockingbird was widely discussed. These debates continue to the present day, including whether there actually was a covert CIA operation named Mockingbird, whether the operation truly sought to subvert the press in the US and elsewhere, and whether the operation really ended by 1976, as the CIA claimed. As such, nearly 50 years later, Operation Mockingbird remains a controversial topic.

The Illiad & The Odyssey are two epic poems by Greek author Homer, works that have been entertaining— and perhaps exasperating— readers for centuries. In a series of lectures, literary scholar Elizabeth McNamer provides engaging insights into these two iconic works. McNamer first discusses how The Iliad portrays love, jealousy, pride, and the courage men and women display in war. McNamer then focuses on and The Odyssey in which the hero Odysseus endures strange adventures en route home to his faithful wife. While these lectures are grounded in scholarly research, they are also accessible for contemporary audiences, helping them appreciate more fully these two great works.

A rollicking history of the life and work of an unheralded genius: Dr. Solomon Snyder, whose experiments with mind-altering drugs helped change the way we think about the causes and treatments of schizophrenia. In the 1950s, the field of psychiatry had nothing to show for itself. While polio was being cured, antibiotics were being discovered, and cancer research was developing, the mental health world had no wins. Asylums were full and nobody had figured out how to fix insanity—specifically schizophrenia, the severest mental illness. Scientists became convinced that if they could engineer a pill to create madness, then they could cure it.Centered around Solomon Snyder, the psychiatrist who ultimately did identify the madness pill, and the community of doctors and researchers he worked with, THE MADNESS PILL recounts the drug-fueled quest to cure schizophrenia. A wunderkind who started medical school at 19, Snyder worked steadily for decades to replicate the illness, ultimately finding in 1970 that amphetamines could trigger a schizophrenia-like state by flooding the brain with dopamine. Five years later, he went on to discover the dopamine receptor and proved that antipsychotic drugs work by disabling dopamine neurons. Snyder’s dopamine hypothesis inspired a generation of researchers to part ways with psychoanalysis and look for the biological basis of schizophrenia and other mental disorders.Using first-hand research and interviews, THE MADNESS PILL is at once a raucous history and insightful portrait of a remarkable scientist who turned psychiatry into a respected science by transforming how mental illness is treated.
