Phoenix is heir to the werewolf pack, even if her father will not formally acknowledge her inheritance. The alpha has concerns about her leading the pack because she is autistic. Phoenix is ready to show him that she may be different, but she is more than capable of keeping her pack safe.
Now, she has a deadline to track down the rogue vampire and make peace with the vampires before the town of Ember goes to war. She also has to prove that she is capable before her father adopts a new heir. Jared may look the part of an alpha, but he can't fight and he can't think strategically. Giving up the pack to him would be giving up on her family.

When I was just a little one I would stay up late at night and watch black-and-white B movies with monsters from space, mutants, lab grown terrors, and nightmare beasts. At night I sometimes dreamed about them. In my imagination they lived and grew. I imagined their life cycle, their society, and I tried to understand them because I saw them as tragic heroes in many cases who had never done anything but be themselves. I think they deserve to have more of their story told, even if I have to make it up myself.
This is the first in a series of short stories. Each one is inspired by a glorious science fiction or horror B movie from the 50s or 60s.
I hope enjoy The Terror From Beyond Mars.

There is, however, another order of living, which the animals do not know, that of awe before the mystery of being ... that can be the root and branch of the spiritual sense of one’s days. That is the birth - the Virgin Birth - in the heart of a properly human, spiritual life.-- Joseph CampbellAnd speaking of sex, the Immaculate Conception does not mean Jesus was conceived in the absence of sex. It means Mary was conceived without Original Sin. That's all it has ever meant. And according to the tabloids, Mary is apparently the only one who can make such a claim. The Jesus thing is called virgin birth.-- George CarlinFollow two unhumans, a robot and a squid, as they begin the vast expansion of humanity into the solar system.
