Sinopsis

Octavia Hinds, knew what hard work was. She worked at her father’s small bodega at nights and went to school in the day to become a therapist. In the midst of it she thought she met the man of her dreams in Demetrius Collias, but with a letter he shattered her life.  Now he was back in the city and looking sexy as hell in his expensive suit and begging for her to forgive him. Octavia refused to put the heart on the line again, she’d barely put back together after he left. But Demetrius would not be denied, he booked sessions on her therapist couch and insisted she listen to his side.
With the truth revealed, she still was hesitant to trust him.  Instead of giving up he decided to win her back with the one thing that was never an issue between them, passion and desire. She knew his feelings about her and what he wanted. And now he’d turned the tables and used the tactic she could never resist. With him in the room in her therapist chair, he wooed her with that sexy talk and she was powerless to say no.

A definitive, career-spanning, best-of tribute to a master of the modern American short story, featuring work from his final unpublished collection.    A fitting summation of one of America’s greatest short story masters, this towering tribute features stories from Airships, Captain Maximus, Bats Out of Hell, High Lonesome, and Barry Hannah’s final unfinished collection, Long, Last, Happy. The astonishingly varied stories in this collection span nearly five decades of unremitting brilliance. Praised for writing “the most consistently interesting sentences of any writer in America” (Sven Birkerts), Hannah’s ferocious, glittering prose and sui generis worldview introduced readers to a literary New South—a fictional landscape that encompasses “women, God, lust, race, nature, gay Confederates, good old boys, bad old boys, guns, animals, fishing, fighting, cars, pestilence, surrealism, gritty realism, the future, and the past . . . tossed together in glorious juxtapositions” (Vanity Fair). Long, Last, Happy confirms Barry Hannah as one of our most brilliant voices.   “Hannah is the Jimi Hendrix of American short fiction; an electrifying Mark Twain—a wailing genius of literary twang, reverb, feedback, and general sonic unholiness that results in grace notes so piercing you heart melts like an overloaded amp.” —Interview

Born in 1862 and died in 1910, O. Henry’s birth name is William Sydney Porter; however, he adopted the pen name O. Henry while in prison. He published 10 collections and over 600 short stories during his lifetime.
The Trimmed Lamp follows The Four Million and provides another series of short stories that take place in New York City in the early years of the 20th century and are representative of the surprise endings that popularized O. Henry’s work. They also capture his use of coincidence or chance to create humor in the story. O Henry wrote about ordinary people in everyday circumstances. He is quoted as once saying, “There are stories in everything. I’ve got some of my best yarns from park benches, lampposts and newspaper stands.”
I hope you enjoy the following readings as much as I enjoyed recording them.

This is Mark Twain's imaginative series of diary entries by Adam and Eve. At first, Adam is puzzled by this new arrival, Eve, in the garden, and he is suspicious of her disturbing appetite for fruit. Eve, believing herself to be some sort of experiment, is curious about another experiment in the garden, perhaps some sort of reptile or possibly architecture. Eve gives names to everything, much to Adam's annoyance. He tries to ignore her, so she seeks companionship among the animals particularly with a certain snake. Adam and Eve grow to love each other and, in the end, an elderly Adam is filled with a realization of that love as he stands at Eve's grave.
