Sinopsis

Under the relentless Texas sun, La Joya Detention Center shimmers like a mirage, a cage of shimmering heat and razor wire. Inside, hope struggles to survive the dust and despair. Yazmin, a Salvadoran mother, shields her young daughter, Luna, with whispered lullabies and fierce determination. Omar, a Syrian doctor haunted by the ghosts of Aleppo, clings to a tattered copy of his oath, his healing hands now tied by circumstance. Elena, an indigenous Guatemalan woman, carries her trauma in silence, her pain etched onto her face like ancient glyphs.  When rumors of expedited deportations sweep through the center, panic ignites. Will their fragile hopes be extinguished before they can taste freedom?Into this crucible of despair walks Stacey Adams, a young journalist hungry for truth. She sees not statistics, but human stories yearning to be told. As she peels back the layers of La Joya, Stacey uncovers a web of corruption that reaches far beyond the barbed wire fences.  Faced with a moral dilemma, she must choose between journalistic objectivity and becoming a voice for the voiceless. Meanwhile, Rhonda Brooks, the center’s jaded immigration lawyer, sees a reflection of her younger self in Stacey’s fire.  Torn between duty and a system rigged against her clients, Rhonda must decide whether to play it safe or risk everything for a chance at justice. As the political climate outside intensifies, Omar, Yazmin, and Elena find strength in unexpected acts of resistance.  A makeshift clinic, whispered translations, and songs of hope become their weapons against despair.  Their courage sparks a hunger strike, a desperate gamble that draws the world’s attention to the human cost of indifference.  But will it be enough to break the chains that bind them?  In a heart-wrenching climax, Elena’s silence shatters, her testimony a powerful indictment of a broken system. Rhonda’s risky legal gamble hangs in the balance, while Stacey’s exposé threatens to expose the powerful figures profiting from human misery.  Under a scorched sky, their intertwined fates will determine whether justice will prevail, or if the desert will claim another generation of dreams.

Amy feels like everything is going wrong. For a start, she's just found out she isn't going to the same high school as everyone else. Add to that her annoying younger brothers, Pops' worsening dementia and Cassie, her supposed best friend, being meaner than ever, and Amy's summer is not looking promising. Especially when Mum tells her they're moving in with Gran and Pops for the holidays … all the way on the other side of town.
But then she discovers who lives over the road from her grandparents: Jay, the kind, quiet boy from school. Soon Amy realizes that friendship isn't always about who talks the most and the loudest, who does the most exciting things or throws the coolest parties. Sometimes a friend is just someone to talk to, someone to listen. But when outside pressures start to creep back in, can Amy hang on to her summer of silver linings?
A humorous and heartfelt story of new friends, fresh starts and silver linings, for fans of Jacqueline Wilson, Lisa Thompson and Cath Howe.
