In this trio of plays, Culture Clash rewrites California’s past in the performance troupe’s own irreverent comic style, interweaving pop culture with their home state’s local history. In Chavez Ravine, called “a hell-raising home run” by Variety, they cover the land grab that uprooted an entire community and built Dodger Stadium. In Water & Power, the topic is the assimilation of Latinos and their rise to political influence. And in Zorro in Hell, Culture Clash re-imagines early California through the eyes of the original masked man.
Culture Clash is Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas, and Herbert Siguenza. Founded in San Francisco’s Mission District on Cinco de Mayo in 1984, they have become the most prominent Chicano/Latino performance troupe in the United States. Their work ranges from sketch comedy to full-length plays and adaptations of Greek classics, and has been produced at universities and theaters throughout the country.

What happens when a mix of lovers get stuck together on a coast-to-coast train? Mainly hilarity. There is every kind of couple imaginable. One serviceman and his bride-to-be are trying desperately to get married but can't find a clergyman to perform the rites. They don't know that right in their midst is a preacher disguised as a man of the world so he and his wife can enjoy a carefree vacation. Then there is a drunk mourning his separation from the wife who just happens to be on the same train. There is even a confirmed bachelor who discovers that a confirmed spinster is his long-lost love from years ago. How these lives intertwine makes up the plot of this rollicking comedy. The piece contains racial slurs, which, although acceptable in the time and place of the story's setting, may offend modern listeners. Poems of Gerard Manley HopkinsNarrated by Denis DalyDuring his lifetime, Hopkins, who was ordained as a Jesuit priest, was best known as a scholar and a teacher of languages. In his youth he composed poetry prolifically, but detroyed all his juvenile work in 1867. In 1874 he commenced writing poetry again, but little of his verse was published in his lifetime. His work was rescued from obscurity by his friend and supporter, Robert Bridges, who later became poet laureate.Hopkins' reputation as a ground breaking poet developed rapidly after Bridges published a collection of Hopkins' verse in 1918. Today he is considered to be one of the most innovative poets of the Nineteenth Century and a major influence on such important figures as T. S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas and W. H. Auden.Hopkin's verse is notable for its striking imagery and use of a unique rolling metrical structure, which he called sprung rhythm. The narrative is about Lewis L. McKinsey a wealthy businessman who reminisces of his past. Initially, the saga describes business reality. Then later deliberately unfolds into encumbered details reminiscing of the protagonist coming of age; by exploring varied vibrant, profound glimpses of exuberant youthful experiences, especially, when visiting the Jersey Shore, which occurred long before his college days, and successful career apparatus. Imagine the beauty of the New Jersey seashore, back in the fifties, which some may remember; considering that many old-timers today would resonate with hearing an old song while walking the boardwalk at the New Jersey Shore, and that song was “Those Wildwood days” by Bobby Rydell. Lewis surmised that even today that memorable song is still being played; however, back in the day, the melody seemed to have held more reverence. In those days hanging out with his friends and consuming cases of Cold Duck, provides somewhat of a lens into their rebellious ways, and meeting wayward women; whom they thought was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
The intentional purpose of this narrative is to provide an absorbing whimsical tale of a wealthy man who deliberately reflects on humbler times. This may be considered somewhat of a rags-to-riches saga. Witness how Lewis derives his obvious present conclusion while illustrating how he arrived at being a Wall Street contender.
This exposition entails elements of love, unavoidable challenges; and graceful benevolent experiences which contributed to an enhanced life well lived on purpose
