Sinopse

Mountain search and rescue is one of the most demanding rescue activities of them all. It take place under very severe and often dramatic conditions like high altitude, snow and ice, crevasses, glaciers and avalances. It is the stuff of real heroic acts and romance. 
The occassional demand for assistance, but on a larrge scale, is then often carried out by volunteers, mainly locals due to the demand for local area and climate knowledge. This book is mainly focusssed on the  Alps, but also visits outher European mountaineous areas.
The special conditions has led to the development of specialized equipment and the most visible is the widespread use of helicopters which have a high degree af maneouverability in inacessible terrain and ability to carry a payload.
The helicopter services work together with traditionsl ground based teams and sometimes move these teams to the search area. Helicopters swiftly move injured persons to a medicsl facility.
Professional mountain rescue services are quite common near tourist resorts like ski resorts where there is a regular demand.
The authors have made a similar book on American Air Rescue and the styles have both similarity and differences between the two continents. We hope the reader will enjoy our selection of photos.

The origins of hieroglyphic writing in ancient Egypt trace back to the dawn of Egyptian civilization, around 3100 BCE. Considered one of the oldest writing systems in human history, hieroglyphs emerged as a complex script combining logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic elements. The early development of this script was intricately linked to the formation of a centralized state, where the need for recording and communication became essential.
The earliest evidence of hieroglyphic writing appears on pottery, labels, and stone artifacts from the pre-dynastic period. These rudimentary symbols gradually evolved into more structured and standardized forms during the Early Dynastic period. As Egypt unified under a single ruler, the writing system became an essential tool for administration, religious practices, and the consolidation of royal authority. Early inscriptions on monuments and ceremonial palettes reveal a combination of pictorial symbols and phonetic elements, reflecting both artistic expression and linguistic utility.
Throughout the Old Kingdom, hieroglyphs developed significantly in both style and function. They became integral to monumental inscriptions, recording achievements of pharaohs and religious texts. The Pyramid Texts, found within the pyramids of the Fifth and Sixth Dynasties, are among the oldest religious texts written in hieroglyphs. These inscriptions aimed to ensure the safe passage of the deceased into the afterlife, indicating that the script held profound religious and cultural significance.
