Sinopsis

Revolutionary Forces explores the complex origins of revolutions by examining the interplay of political oppression, social inequality, and economic disparity. It argues that revolutions aren't spontaneous but the result of long-term systemic failures within a society's core structures. The book uniquely emphasizes the interconnectedness of political legitimacy, social stratification, and economic instability, demonstrating how crises in one area amplify vulnerabilities in others.

The book presents a theoretical framework defining key concepts like state legitimacy and social capital, then analyzes case studies such as the French, Russian, and Chinese Revolutions. These cases illuminate how failures in political representation, exacerbated social divisions, and economic hardship created revolutionary momentum. By drawing upon political science, sociology, and economics, Revolutionary Forces provides a holistic understanding of revolutionary change.

The book progresses by first establishing a theoretical foundation, then delving into specific historical examples, and finally synthesizing these cases to draw broader conclusions applicable to contemporary societies. Readers gain insights into the warning signs of social and political instability, enabling them to assess risks and advocate for policies that promote equity and stability.

An intimate retelling of Lyndon B. Johnson's politics and presidency by one of his closest advisors.

Horace Busby was one of LBJ's most trusted advisors; their close working and personal relationship spanned twenty years. In The Thirty-First of March he offers an indelible portrait of a president and a presidency at a time of crisis. From the aftereffects of the Kennedy assassination, when Busby was asked by the newly sworn-in president to sit by his bedside during his first troubled nights in office, to the concerns that defined the Great Society—civil rights, the economy, social legislation, housing, and the Vietnam War—Busby not only articulated and refined Johnson's political thinking, he also helped shape the most ambitious, far-reaching legislative agenda since FDR's New Deal.

Here is Johnson the politician, Johnson the schemer, Johnson who advised against JFK's choice of an open limousine that fateful day in Dallas, and Johnson the father, sickened by the deaths of young men fighting and dying in Vietnam on his orders. The Thirty-first of March is a rare glimpse into the inner sanctum of Johnson's presidency, as seen through the eyes of one of the people who understood him best.

In this illuminating guide, Miss Aida corrects widespread misconceptions about Hoodoo―a powerful African diaspora tradition rooted in African traditional religions. She reveals authentic practices, contrasts Hoodoo with related traditions like Santeria and Haitian Vodou, and reclaims this rich spiritual craft from misrepresentation, offering listeners a genuine understanding of Hoodoo's true essence.

Hoodoo and conjure may be household words, but the popular magical craft practiced by tens of thousands of individuals has been grossly misrepresented in many modern practices. Traditional Hoodoo & Conjure seeks to reverse these misconceptions and provide practitioners with the history, mechanics, and tools to understand not only how but why each magical action serves a greater purpose.

Because Hoodoo derives its roots from African traditional religions that were initially brought to North America by enslaved people during the transatlantic era, many aspects of the craft parallel African-Caribbean practices, such as Santeria and Haitian Vodou. Miss Aida teaches listeners how to honor their ancestors in a traditional manner and petition honored entities. By offering magical baths, twenty-five traditional rituals, 125 spells, fifty recipes, and forty prayers, listeners will develop a deeper understanding of Hoodoo while becoming knowledgeable and formidable spellcasters.

Sammy Davis, Jr. opened it. Luther Vandross closed it. During the 19 years in between, a who’s who of the world’s top entertainers and speakers performed on the novel revolving stage of the Front Row Theatre, from Liberace to Alice Cooper, Jay Leno to Jerry Seinfeld, Marlene Dietrich to Dolly Parton, Presidents Ford and Carter and culinary grand dame Julia Child. Many were unknown opening acts, like Whitney Houston. Another, the legendary Roy Orbison, would unknowingly perform the final concert of his life there.
Cleveland Landmarks Press’ newest release, As the Stage Turned: A Front Row Theatre Memoir, captures the dynamic energy that sprung from one of the most unique entertainment venues in the country – a theater-in-the-round located in the sleepy suburb of Highland Heights, just outside of Cleveland.
Jeannie Emser Schultz, the venue’s longtime former director of marketing and publicity, has written a memoir capturing the star power and draw of the Front Row. It’s an homage to seemingly everything related to show business and the cultural significance of that famed theater that drew the biggest and brightest stars of its day.
For instance, where else would you learn that several days into Sammy Davis’s opening run at the Front Row in 1974, he received a phone call threatening his life? Or that the only way Frank Sinatra would agree to perform there was if he and his entire entourage could rent out the Shaker Heights home of Larry Dolin, the founder and president of the Front Row? Or that comedian Bob Newhart always kept a nude picture on his dressing room table of Anthony Newley looking backwards through his legs (Newhart told Emser Schultz it was one of the funniest pictures he ever saw)?
Emser Schultz’s narrative takes readers on a detailed and behind-the-scenes firsthand journey of the almost 20-year history of what was considered one of America’s most significant entertainment venues. Revisit your own fond memories of a lost Cleveland classic.

Robert Smalls’ life illustrates what can happen when one is freed from the fetters of others’ estimations. Smalls’ metamorphosis from slave to ship pilot to U.S. Congressman displays the power of fiery determination and unrelenting ambition. News of Smalls’ incredible exploit made it all the way up to Lincoln, who eventually met him and asked why he would dare such a thing. Smalls replied with only one word: ‘Freedom.’”
In desperation, Robert Smalls and other enslaved members of the crew of the Confederate transport ship CSS Planter dared to dream of sailing themselves to freedom, so on the night of May 13, 1862, they attempted to escape with their masters’ ship. That perilous night could have ended in triumph or tragedy for the mutineers, and Smalls’ wife, little daughter, and infant son were below deck, along with the families of his crew. They risked it all, and 17 men, women, and children escaped enslavement because of the intrepid plan.
After escaping, Smalls continued to participate in the Civil War, and throughout 17 missions and combat battles, he fought for the freedom of enslaved people in the Confederate states. Meanwhile, he learned to read, taking lessons from a teacher named Harriet Buss, and he also lobbied Secretary of War Edwin Stanton to enlist Black soldiers. The Union eventually did so, recruiting thousands of Black soldiers and formed several new regiments.
After enslaved people won emancipation, Smalls achieved the rank of major general in the South Carolina militia, and after the war, he served in the South Carolina state legislature, followed by multiple terms as a South Carolina representative to the U.S. House of Representatives. His achievements were remarkable for anyone, but especially for a former slave living in an era defined by violence and prejudice.
