Sinopse

"Judicial Rebels" explores how justice systems evolve through the actions of courageous judges and lawyers who defied legal traditions to initiate transformative reforms. It argues that legal reform isn't just about amending laws, but about fundamentally shifting perspectives on justice and equality. The book highlights that legal systems often reflect the biases of their time, and those who challenge these biases face significant opposition. It emphasizes that progress in justice systems is driven by individuals willing to challenge legal orthodoxy, reshaping legal landscapes to meet society's evolving needs.

The book's narrative unfolds across three parts, beginning with an introduction to the concept of judicial rebellion and its various forms. It then presents case studies of judges and lawyers who spearheaded significant legal reforms, addressing issues like civil rights and gender equality across different historical periods and jurisdictions. Finally, it analyzes the long-term implications of judicial rebellion, discussing its impact on contemporary legal systems and its relevance to ongoing debates about justice.

By synthesizing legal theory with historical narratives, the book makes complex legal concepts accessible to a broad audience interested in history and politics.

In this heart wrenching and inspirational memoir a woman and her mother, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, embark on a road trip through national parks, revisiting the memories, and the mountains, that made them who they are.Steph Jagger lost her mother before she lost her. Her mother, stricken with an incurable disease that slowly erases all sense of self, struggles to remember her favorite drink, her favorite song, and—perhaps most heartbreaking of all—Steph herself. Steph watches as the woman who loved and raised her slips away before getting the chance to tell her story, and so Steph makes a promise: her mother will walk it and she will write it.Too aware of her mother’s waning memory, Steph proposes that the two take a camping trip out to Montana—which her mother, on the urging of Steph’s father, agrees to embark upon. An adventure full of horseback riding, hiking, and “tenting” out West quickly turns into one woman’s reflection on childhood, motherhood, personhood—and what it means to love someone who doesn’t quite remember the person she spent her lifetime becoming.A staggeringly beautiful examination of how stories are passed down through generations and from Mother Nature, Everything Left to Remember brings us the wisdom of who our memories make us under the constellations of the vast Montana sky.A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books

The most famous church in Jerusalem for nearly 2,000 years, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, often called the Church of the Resurrection, was built in the era of St. Constantine, and the church as a structure has no history separable from the city of Jerusalem and its environs. It is venerated as being on the site where Jesus was crucified and buried, and naturally, making it a crucial pilgrimage site for Christians, and it is now the home of the Greek Orthodox Jerusalem Patriarchate. Moreover, it was the site of many important councils, some of which altered Christian history forever. In short, the Sepulchre was and is synonymous with Jerusalem, and it was essentially the nodal center of the city. Naturally, the Church has had a turbulent history just as Jerusalem has. Under the Emperor Vespasian, Jerusalem was attacked and depopulated by Roman forces in 70 A.D., and from 131-134, the Jewish revolt invited another Roman reprisal. Over and over again, Jerusalem has been decimated, sacked and razed.
The temple built by Constantine was demolished by Jewish militants in 614 under the protection of the Persian Empire. There was an earthquake in 746, and a devastating fire in 967. The temple continued to experience ups and downs that are endemic and essential to its history. In 1036, the Islamic government permitted the rebuilding of the church, and in 1048, Constantine Monomakh improved on the new structure.
Christian Crusaders would famously conquer Jerusalem at the end of the 11th century, and over the ensuing centuries, Christians and Muslims were embroiled in one of the most infamous territorial disputes of all time, viciously and relentlessly battling one another for the Holy Land. Of course, this made the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a perfect target, so much so that a powerful company of knights was founded to guard the church and defend its presence with their lives.

The Iron Age stands as one of the most transformative periods in the history of the ancient Near East, a time when societies were reshaped by technological innovation, political upheaval, and cultural reinvention. Beginning around 1200 BCE, the collapse of the Bronze Age world brought an end to centuries-old systems of international trade, diplomacy, and imperial control. Great cities were abandoned or destroyed, populations shifted, and long-established kingdoms vanished almost overnight. What followed was not merely a period of decline, but an era of profound change, during which new powers emerged from the ruins of the old order and forged a radically different political landscape.
As iron gradually replaced bronze in tools and weaponry, warfare became more accessible and destructive, enabling ambitious rulers to expand their territories with unprecedented efficiency. In Mesopotamia and the Levant, rising states such as Assyria and Babylon transformed themselves into formidable military empires, employing organized armies, advanced siege techniques, and administrative systems that allowed them to govern vast and diverse populations. Meanwhile, smaller kingdoms like Israel, Phoenicia, and Lydia developed their own political structures and cultural traditions while attempting to manage politics among their stronger neighbors. To the east, the Neo-Assyrians and Neo-Babylonians eventually rose to power.
The Iron Age also brought crucial cultural changes. Writing systems spread more widely, religious traditions evolved, and monumental architecture reshaped urban landscapes. The Bible took form amid these turbulent centuries, Phoenician sailors carried their alphabet across the Mediterranean, and Assyrian kings filled palace walls with detailed reliefs celebrating their victories. Modern archaeological discoveries, from fortified cities and royal inscriptions to everyday household objects, have offered invaluable insight into how people across the region lived.
