Sinopse

International Law Architects explores the lives and contributions of key individuals who have shaped the landscape of international law, examining how their visions influenced global agreements and diplomatic legal systems. This book delves into the intersection of law, politics, and world history, highlighting the crucial role specific figures played in resolving global disputes and developing international legal institutions like the United Nations. For instance, the book examines the architects behind treaties such as the Geneva Conventions, illustrating how their dedication impacted international cooperation and global stability.

The book progresses by first setting the historical context and fundamental concepts, then transitions into examining the careers of pivotal individuals. It offers case studies that reveal the motivations, challenges, and compromises involved in shaping the current international legal order and international relations.By focusing on individual contributions, rather than solely on state actions, the book offers a unique perspective on the human element in international law. Western civilization is generally regarded as the child of Athens, Jerusalem, and Rome. That is, in the West, our philosophical and political thought is derived from that of the ancient Greeks; our Christian religion comes from the Jewish religion, and both of these came to us via the Roman Empire.

Western society has other forefathers as well: we would be unwise to give the Byzantine Empire short shrift. The ways in which it has influenced our world for the good, and indeed, created the parameters of our society at its healthiest and strongest, are insufficiently appreciated today.

If the United States were to last as long as the Roman Empire, including its Byzantine period, it would have to continue as an independent country until the year 2899. To maintain a unified nation state for over eleven hundred years is a remarkable achievement by any standard, and the Romans accomplished it while facing existential threats and efforts to extinguish their polity during virtually every period of their existence. Now, nearly six hundred years after the demise of the empire, its influence still resonates in a number of fields.

There is no arguing with success. It's time we took notice.

In 1494, there were five sovereign regional powers in Italy: Milan, Venice, Florence, the Papal States and Naples. In 1536, only one remained: Venice. These decades of conflict precipitated great anxiety among Western thinkers, and Italians responded to the fragmentation, forevermore, of Latin Christendom, the end of self-governance for Italians, and the beginning of the early modern era in a myriad of ways. They were always heavily influenced by the lived experience of warfare between large Christian armies on the peninsula.
The diplomatic and military history of this 30-year period was a complex situation that one eminent Renaissance historian, Lauro Martines, has described as "best told by a computer, so many and tangled are the treatises, negotiations and battles." At the same time, the fighting went in tandem with the Renaissance and was influenced by it. Most historians credit the city-state of Florence as the place that started and developed the Italian Renaissance, a process carried out through the patronage and commission of artists during the late 12th century. If Florence is receiving its due credit, much of it belongs to the Medicis, the family dynasty of Florence that ruled at the height of the Renaissance. The dynasty held such influence that some of its family members even became Pope.
Meanwhile, plans for a French invasion were years in the making, and France’s young King Charles VIII, heavily influenced by chivalric tales and his men of finance, had begun his preparations for conquering Naples as a base from which to launch a crusade in 1491. Two key events were the catalysts for these plans. The first was the arrival of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere at Avignon in May 1494.

The second in an uproarious, sardonic and incisive look through English history. In this volume, we discover the actions of the Normans and King Richard, giving clear reasons why we history should hold them in nothing but contempt. It also covers the signing of the Magna Carta, the first bill of rights in England, which came about because a powerless king tried to go to war, realised that he had no-one behind him, and was bullied into signing in order to not simply be executed.
    Covers:
William The Conqueror, and the thugs and mercenaries who bought titles and became England's gentry.
William Rufus, and his utterly ridiculous death.
Henry The First, Surnamed Beauclerc, his conquest of Normandy, and death from a finger wound.
    Stephen.
Henry The Second, Surnamed Plantagenet, and his constant battles with both the church and his own family.
Richard The First, Surnamed Cour De Lion, and how truly awful he was in every respect.
John, Surnamed Sansterre, Or Lackland, and how tried to lead an army that deserted him and was forced into signing the Magna Carta.
