Summary

Destination Equality Levels explores the crucial intersection of travel and social justice, offering a fresh perspective on ethical tourism by ranking global destinations based on their commitment to equality. The book highlights that a welcoming facade can often mask underlying discrimination against marginalized groups. For example, destinations with vibrant LGBTQ+ scenes may still lack comprehensive anti-discrimination laws, impacting the overall travel experience. This book empowers travelers to make informed choices that support inclusive destinations and encourages critical reflection on the social responsibility inherent in tourism.

The book's unique approach involves quantifying equality through measurable standards like marriage equality, healthcare access, and anti-discrimination enforcement. By analyzing legal frameworks and societal norms, Destination Equality Levels moves beyond subjective impressions to provide a data-driven assessment of each location. It acknowledges the influence of historical context, such as colonial legacies, on present-day equality levels.

The book progresses methodically, defining key concepts before introducing its ranking methodology, and then delves into thematic sections focusing on marriage rights, healthcare, and anti-discrimination.

Ultimately, the book argues that travelers can promote social progress by favoring destinations with strong equality protections. It blends politics and travel to offer a holistic understanding of equality and social justice within the tourism industry. This framework serves as a practical guide for travelers, travel agencies, and policymakers alike, offering actionable steps to support inclusive destinations and advocate for change.

The story of the movement to desegregate Boston’s public schools through busing—and the backlash that followed.

In 1974, a federal judge ruled that Boston’s public schools were unconstitutionally segregated. The solution? A controversial experiment in desegregation known as “busing,” which would take children from majority-white schools and bus them to predominantly Black schools, and vice versa. What followed was a year of upheaval, violence, and fierce protests, as Boston became a battleground for the heated national debate over school integration and racism in the North.

In this dramatic audiobook full of surprising twists and fascinating characters, journalist Leon Neyfakh (co-creator of the podcasts Slow Burn and Fiasco) unpacks the history of busing in Boston and brings to life the human stories behind the headlines by talking to the people who saw what happened with their own eyes. Combining historical analysis with firsthand accounts, Fiasco explores not only the impact of busing in Boston, but the larger questions about race, politics, and the struggle for equal education that continue to reverberate in America half a century later.

In his impassioned-yet-measured book, Rafael A. Mangual offers an incisive critique of America's increasingly radical criminal justice reform movement, and makes a convincing case against the pursuit of "justice" through mass-decarceration and depolicing. After a summer of violent protests in 2020—sparked by the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks—a dangerously false narrative gained mainstream acceptance: Criminal justice in the United States is overly punitive and racially oppressive. But, the harshest and loudest condemnations of incarceration, policing, and prosecution are often shallow and at odds with the available data. And the significant harms caused by this false narrative are borne by those who can least afford them: black and brown people who are disproportionately the victims of serious crimes. In Criminal (In)Justice, Rafael A. Mangual offers a more balanced understanding of American criminal justice, and cautions against discarding traditional crime control measures. A powerful combination of research, data-driven policy journalism, and the author's lived experiences, this book explains what many reform advocates get wrong, and illustrates how the misguided commitment to leniency places America's most vulnerable communities at risk. The stakes of this moment are incredibly high. Ongoing debates over criminal justice reform have the potential to transform our society for a generation—for better or for worse. Grappling with the data—and the sometimes harsh realities they reflect—is the surest way to minimize the all-too-common injustices plaguing neighborhoods that can least afford them.

In June 1972, President Richard Nixon put pen to paper and signed the Educational Amendments of 1972 into law. The nearly 150-page document makes no mention of “gender,” “athletics,” “girls,” or “women.” The bill did not appear to contain anything earth shattering. But tucked into its final pages, a heading appears, “Title IX—Prohibition of Sex Discrimination.” These 37 words would change the world for girls and women across the United States. On its face, Title IX legally guaranteed equal opportunity in education. In time, Title IX would serve as the tipping point for the modern era of women’s sport. Slowly but surely, women’s athletics at the high school and collegiate levels grew to prominence, and Tennessee fast emerged as a national leader.
In Title IX, Pat Summitt, and Tennessee’s Trailblazers, Mary Ellen Pethel introduces readers to past and present pioneers—each instrumental to the success of women’s athletics across the state and nation. Through vibrant profiles, Pethel celebrates the lives and careers of household names like Pat Summitt and Candace Parker, as well as equally important forerunners such as Ann Furrow and Teresa Phillips. Through their lived experiences, these fifty individuals laid the foundation for athletic excellence in Tennessee, which in turn shaped the national landscape for women’s sports.
With interviewees ranging from age 20 to 93, Pethel artfully combines storytelling with scholarship. Guided by the voices of the athletes, coaches, and administrators, Pethel vividly documents achievement and adversity, wins and losses, and advice for the next generation. This book represents the first statewide compilation of its kind—offering readers a behind-the- scenes perspective of Tennessee women who dedicated their lives to the advancement of sport and gender equality. Readers will delight in Title IX, Pat Summitt, and Tennessee’s Trailblazers: 50 Years, 50 Stories. For more follow @drpethel.
