  Teotihuacan, known as the "City of the Gods," remains one of the most enigmatic civilizations of ancient Mesoamerica. Its origins date back to around 400 BCE, when small settlements began to emerge in the Valley of Mexico. As the population grew, so did the need for organization, leading to the development of complex social structures. Unlike other civilizations that revolved around a single ruling dynasty, Teotihuacan appears to have been governed by a collective leadership, possibly a council of elites who controlled different aspects of city life. 
  One of the most intriguing aspects of Teotihuacan’s early history is the origin of its name. The Aztecs, who discovered the abandoned ruins centuries later, named it "Teotihuacan," meaning "the place where gods were born." This suggests that even in ancient times, the city held a sense of divine significance. Mythology and spiritual beliefs were deeply intertwined with its development, as seen in its grand temples and pyramids, which were aligned with celestial movements.

The man who, as a teenager, turned away from a religion that rejected him, who became a Salafist out of love for his brother in religion—he was unaware of his homosexuality at the time—is today an adult who has matured, a moderate Muslim who returned to his initial positions, denouncing the corruption that reigns within Islam, the quest for power between Salafists and Muslim extremists.
  In a remarkably well-written book, halfway between biography and essay, he explains how he lived through the discovery of his homosexuality. He tells of the many questions of identity that followed, the rejection of his Salafist "brothers" who were disturbed by his effeminate attitude and the relationships of domination within the Muslim community. In his analysis, which appears in the background, the author wonders: Why such a need for universal normalization among his Muslim brothers? Why such a need for gregarious living? Why do they never talk about the well-being of the other?
  The Koran, a stake in the fratricidal wars of those who use religion as a weapon, is a real bargaining chip for dogmatic Muslims. Very early on, he confided in me: “I was astonished by the way in which it is possible to ‘buy’ the respect of a brother by quoting two or three well-felt verses, followed by the commentary of an ulama, a pillar of Islamic law." The Koran and the Flesh is a testimony of an unsuspected richness which, beyond the question of homosexuality, deals with the more ignored aspect of the life of a nearly ordinary Muslim in France.

  Opinions of authorities differ widely concerning the origin of playing cards, the purpose for which they were intended, and the time of their introduction into Europe. In his Researches into the History of Playing Cards, Samuel Weller Singer advances the opinion that cards reached Southern Europe from India by way of Arabia. It is probable that the Tarot cards were part of the magical and philosophical lore secured by the Knights Templars from the Saracens or one of the mystical sects then flourishing in Syria. Returning to Europe, the Templars, to avoid persecution, concealed the arcane meaning of the symbols by introducing the leaves of their magical book ostensibly as a device for amusement and gambling. 
  Through the Gypsies the Tarot cards may be traced back to the religious symbolism of the ancient Egyptians. In his remarkable work, The Gypsies, Samuel Roberts presents ample proof of their Egyptian origin. In one place he writes: "When Gypsies originally arrived in England is very uncertain. They are first noticed in our laws, by several statutes against them in the reign of Henry VIII.; in which they are described as 'an outlandish people, calling themselves Egyptians,--who do not profess any craft or trade, but go about in great numbers, * * *.'" A curious legend relates that after the destruction of the Serapeum in Alexandria, the large body of attendant priests banded themselves together to preserve the secrets of the rites of Serapis. Their descendants (Gypsies) carrying with them the most precious of the volumes saved from the burning library--the Book of Enoch, or Thoth (the Tarot)--became wanderers upon the face of the earth, remaining a people apart with an ancient language and a birthright of magic and mystery.
