Sinopsis

The Five Classics, a foundational text within the Confucian canon, comprises essential works that shaped Chinese thought and cultural values. These texts'—including the Yijing (Book of Changes), Shijing (Book of Songs), Shangshu (Book of Documents), Liji (Book of Rites), and Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals)'—demonstrate a distinctive literary style characterized by aphorisms, poetry, and historical narrative. Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous Spring and Autumn period, these classics reflect not only the philosophical inquiries of Confucius but also the socio-political realities of his time, advocating for moral integrity and virtuous governance within a hierarchical society. Confucius (Kong Fuzi), an influential philosopher and educator, dedicated his life to elucidating ethical leadership and the importance of harmonious social relations. His teachings emphasize the cultivation of virtue through education and the reverence for tradition, features starkly present in The Five Classics. The compilation of these texts represents his commitment to preserving and transmitting wisdom from prior generations while adapting it to address contemporary societal issues. The Five Classics is essential reading for anyone interested in East Asian philosophy, cultural history, or political ethics. To the ancient Egyptians, the gods and goddesses were all around them and could be seen daily in nature. Nearly every animal found in ancient Egypt, both domestic and wild, were associated with a god or goddess, which can be seen in Egyptian art where deities are often depicted with human bodies and animal heads. Or sometimes the deities are portrayed as complete animals. Since deities were associated with certain animals, all animals of a specific species were given divine and protected status.
Animals were constantly involved in the core elements of Greek society and cults, and this centrality could be found in the numerous depictions of animals on coins and vases throughout the Greek colonies. Game and fish were plentiful, along with deer, wolves, boar, lynx, and even bears. Similarly, there were numerous jackals and porcupines. There were, however, a few significant species that would have been found in the wild in Classical times, such as the agrimis (or Cretan goat) and the lion, that have either become totally extinct or virtually extinct in the modern-day region. Lions, in particular, often feature in Greek literature, and both Herodotus and Aristotle described lions in northern Greece. The presence of lions in Greece seems further confirmed by their numerous portrayals in Mycenaean art and tales of lions in Homer.
Rome's complex relationship with animals goes right back to its foundation myth, and even today, the wolf remains a symbol of the Eternal City, forming part of the logo for the capital's football team, A.S. Roma. According to tradition, the city of Rome was founded by Romulus, who, with his brother Remus, was nursed and sheltered by a she-wolf. That tale, widely believed as a historical fact by ancient Romans, had a profound influence on Roman culture, and in part that shaped Roman attitudes toward their animals.

Through Gingerbites, I discovered that our stories—like our food—are meant to be shared. They carry resilience, joy, and cultural pride.
The journey from Juvance to Gingerbites taught me that endings can become beginnings in disguise, and that growth often rises from our deepest trials.
I hope the lessons I’ve learned ignite something in others—especially women, immigrants, and entrepreneurs who may feel like they’re standing on shaky ground. Trust your roots. Trust your recipe. Keep going.
I invite you into my kitchen, into my story, into the heart of a journey rooted in faith, family, and flavor. Let us gather—not just to eat, but to share, to listen, and to honor the rich, layered tapestry of who we are.
Because in every jar, every plate, and every shared story, there is healing, there is heritage, and above all, there is hope.
This is my story—told from the heart of a woman who has lived, lost, and loved deeply. It’s about finding my way back to myself through food, faith, and the memories that never left me.
Even when life falls apart, we can gather the pieces, season them with grace, and begin again.
Because what we preserve— our stories, our culture, our resilience— is what keeps us alive.

Cola di Rienzo was a man whose life and actions have reverberated down the centuries, as his charismatic, yet unsuccessful dictatorship has spawned legends and comparisons with movements of later ages. His attempt to bring the greatness of Roman antiquity into the reality of the 14th century, the city’s lowest point, is inspiring on its face. In 1938, Iris Origo saw how Cola was being used by her present era and noted that "within the last century Emperor, Communist and Fascist in turn have paid tribute to Cola di Rienzo as a kindred spirit or precursor. But historical parallels are deceptive. To measure a man of one century against a man of another is to see neither of them in the light of his own time…"
The different Italian states on the peninsula experienced Napoleonic rule in the early 1800s, followed by a brief restoration that led to widespread political upheavals in the 1820s. As the 1840s came to a close, the Italian peninsula was in major disarray. In 1847, the Austrian Chancellor Klement von Metternich referred to Italy as merely a “geographical expression,” and to some extent, he was not far off the mark.
The Italian state may have come together thanks to ideals, but the success of the Second Italian War of Independence owed a lot of its success to chance, foreign intervention, and the wheeling and dealing of a few powerful men. Its story is long and complex, and the ultimate unification of Italy as it’s recognized today would require no less than four wars. Nonetheless, despite its difficult birthing process and rocky start, the Italian state has survived over 150 years, and it even managed to remain united in the aftermath of World War II, escaping the fate of Nazi Germany.
