Sinopse

Struggling to sound natural in Japanese? Looking for a Japanese "text"book that's as fun as it is educational? Learn how to use ninety-nine essential Japanese onomatopoeic sound words with this book and the included Anki flashcard deck and sound files.Japanese has many words that symbolize sounds (onomatopoeia) or soundless actions or feelings (mimetic words).

There are two main types of these words:

擬音語 giongo—onomatopoeia [a word that imitates a sound.]

擬態語 gitaigo—ideophones or mimetic word [a word that mimics something that doesn’t make a sound.]

We have this in English too. Think of the 1960s’ Batman TV series. Bang! POW! Boom! Or the sounds animals make but really aren’t very representative. Bow-wow. Chirp. Cluck cluck. These are all English examples of giongo. What about gitaigo? We don’t use words that mimic non-sounds too much, but there are a few in English: twinkle twinkle, glimmer, and willy-nilly. Each of the ninety-nine entries begins with the target word itself and several English definitions. This is followed by a single example sentence showing usage. At the bottom of the page are some notes either about the word itself or the example sentence. We are also including, for no extra charge, an Anki flashcard deck of all the words. Find the download link on the last page of the book.

Culture and society are deeply interconnected, shaping human behavior, beliefs, and institutions. Culture encompasses the shared practices, values, symbols, and artifacts that define a group of people, while society refers to the structured interactions and relationships within a community or nation. Culture provides the foundation for social norms, influencing everything from language and customs to laws and moral expectations. At the same time, society determines how culture is transmitted, adapted, and reinforced through institutions such as family, education, and government.
One of the key aspects of culture is its learned nature. Unlike biological traits, cultural knowledge is passed down through generations via socialization. From early childhood, individuals absorb cultural norms through interactions with family, peers, and media. These shared understandings create a sense of belonging and cohesion within a group. However, culture is not static; it evolves over time as societies encounter new ideas, technologies, and challenges. The dynamic nature of culture ensures that it remains relevant to the needs and values of the people who uphold it.

Empire of Laws An - Legal...

For many years, Britain tried to impose its own laws on the peoples it conquered, and English common law usually followed the Union Jack. But the common law became less common after Britain emerged from the Seven Years' War as the world's most powerful empire. At that point, imperial policymakers adopted a strategy of legal pluralism: some colonies remained under English law, while others retained much of their previous legal regimes.

As legal historian Christian R. Burset argues, determining how much English law a colony received depended on what kind of colony Britain wanted to create. Policymakers thought English law could turn any territory into an anglicized, commercial colony; legal pluralism, in contrast, would ensure a colony's economic and political subordination. Britain's turn to legal pluralism thus reflected the victory of a new vision of empire—authoritarian, extractive, and tolerant—over more assimilationist and egalitarian alternatives. Among other implications, this helps explain American colonists' reverence for the common law: it expressed and preserved their equal status in the empire. This book, the first empire-wide overview of law as an instrument of policy in the eighteenth-century British Empire, offers an imaginative rethinking of the relationship between tolerance and empire.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an American children's novel written by author L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. The first novel in the Oz books, the Kansas farm girl named Dorothy ends up in the magical Land of Oz after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their home by a tornado. Upon her arrival in Oz, she learns she cannot return home until she has destroyed the Wicked Witch of the West. The book was first published in the United States in May 1900 by the George M. Hill Company. In January 1901, the publishing company completed printing the first edition, a total of 10,000 copies, which quickly sold out. It had sold three million copies by the time it entered the public domain in 1956. It was often reprinted under the title The Wizard of Oz, which is the title of the successful 1902 Broadway musical adaptation as well as the classic 1939 live-action film. The ground-breaking success of both the original 1900 novel and the 1902 Broadway musical prompted Baum to write thirteen additional Oz books which serve as official sequels to the first story. Over a century later, the book is one of the best-known stories in American literature, and the Library of Congress has declared the work to be "America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale."
