Sinopse

In "Harlem Shadows: The Poems of Claude McKay," the celebrated poet explores the multifaceted experience of African Americans in the Harlem Renaissance, employing a vibrant mix of sonnets, free verse, and lyrical styles. McKay's poignant imagery and sharp social commentary reflect the struggles, resilience, and aspirations of Black communities in early 20th-century America, drawing readers into the turbulent yet hopeful atmosphere of Harlem during this transformative period. His deft use of dialect and rhythm showcases a deep engagement with both traditional poetic forms and the emerging vernacular of his contemporaries, making the text a rich tapestry of cultural expression. Claude McKay, an influential figure of the Harlem Renaissance, was born in Jamaica and migrated to the United States, where he encountered racial prejudice and cultural dislocation. His personal experiences of exile and identity crises motivated him to articulate the complexities of race, class, and belonging through his poetry. McKay's works often encompass themes of love, social justice, and nationalism, reflecting his deep commitment to fostering a sense of pride and unity within the Black community. This collection is essential reading for anyone interested in the vibrant history of African American literature and culture. McKay's evocative language and passionate themes not only resonate with the struggles of the past but also speak to contemporary issues of race and identity, making "Harlem Shadows" a vital and timeless work. Welcome y'all! This project was created for those who think they don't like Shakespeare. It is a completely unsanctioned and unconventional interpretation of some of the works of William Shakespeare. If you are a purist be forewarned! I have always been fascinated with the written works of Shakespeare since I was a child trying to decipher the giant volume of his works I discovered in my father's library. I knew it was important historically but the language had me often running to a dictionary in those pre-Google days. Understanding a live performance was an equally challenging task as the British accents combined with the lambic pentameter rhythm left me struggling to understand the meaning. But once you figure what he's saying you realized these timeless stories of dysfunctional families and political intrigue are just as relevant today as 400 years ago. Every actor in training experiences the works of William Shakespeare to some degree. While memorizing lines I would try various characters and accents. For Richard III's famous opening monologue I settled on a genteel aristocrat from the Southern United States. I shared with my instructor and after some initial eye rolls he had to admit it was easier to understand. Eventually I created a one man show around the idea and wrote original songs that I believe express the emotion and underlying intentions of the pieces. And of course what's a variety show without an MC or two. In this case two squabbling siblings Auntie Bella and her twin brother Beauregard to bring a small respite to the drama. During the COVID pandemic I decided to record an audio version of the show. I hope you enjoy my family of misfits as much as I did creating them. But hey, to thine own taste be true. Cousin Willy must have had a sense of humor to write some of this stuff!

'And you have fixed my life – however short. You did not light me: I was always a mad comet; but you have fixed me. I spun round you a satellite for a month, but I shall swing out soon, a dark star in the orbit where you will blaze.'

A deeply powerful poetry collection that lays bare both the horrors and humanity of the First World War, told with unflinching honesty and profound beauty by one of the greatest war poets in history: Wildfred Owen.
Wilfred Owen: The Selected Poems brings together the most searing and unforgettable works of the poet whose voice has come to define the tragedy of World War I. Writing from the trenches, Owen crafts poems that confront the violence, fear and tragic waste of war while elevating the humanity of those caught within it. His mastery of imagery and sound – whether in the bitter irony of 'Dulce et Decorum Est', the haunting tenderness of 'Anthem for Doomed Youth', or the bleak beauty of 'Exposure' – transforms personal and collective suffering into timeless art. This collection not only preserves the anguish of a generation lost to conflict, but also continues to speak across time about the costs of war, the fragility of life and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
Wilfred Owen (1893 – 1918) was one of the most famous English poets writing during the First World War. A second lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment, Owen endured several traumatic experiences throughout his time in service, much of which was the inspiration for his writing. Owen was killed in action at just twenty-five years old, but his poetry depicting the horrors of warfare remain widely read to this day.

These poems spring from taxis, supermarkets and long car drives through the wind and rain. They spring from fantasies, daydreams, nightmares, from love and hate, but, above all, they exalt and enhance everyday experiences.
