While Homer's existence as a historical person is still a topic of debate, the writings attributed to the name have made their mark not only on Greek history and literature, but upon western civilization itself. Homer's epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, laid the foundation upon which Ancient Greece developed not only its culture, but its societal values, religious beliefs, and practice of warfare as well.

This publication features the Samuel Butler translation, and while it strays from the poetic style reproduced by more well known translators like Robert Fagles and Robert Fitzgerald, the vision of the epics as if they were prose found in modern novels take their best form under Butler's most capable hand.

A fast-paced, funny and wildly inventive play, Flora Wilson Brown's The Beautiful Future is Coming looks at two hundred and fifty years of real and imagined history through the eyes of three couples. First performed at Jermyn Street Theatre, London, in 2024, this edition was published alongside a new production at Bristol Old Vic in 2025, directed by the theatre's Artistic Director Nancy Medina.

Exodus: The Shanghai Jews

As Jews tried to escape Nazi Germany in the 1930s, they faced unthinkable roadblocks in obtaining exit visas. And while they were denied entry in one country after another, a bureaucratic oddity enabled some of them to flee to an unlikely destination: Shanghai, China.  
 
In this LATW original commission, playwright Kate McAll used the survivors’ own words to create a narrative of people starting their lives over in a completely new land.

New poetry from Scott Cairns on containing the uncontainable


Often, when speaking of what he has called the poetic operation of language, Scott Cairns has characterized that event as our " glimpsing an indeterminate, inexhaustible enormity within a discrete space." This is the poet' s continuing fascination with lacunae, those spaces, those openings that offer more within than appearances can register from outside the ostensible covert of their terms. Cairns is here focused upon how an image, a word, or— in the case of the Theotokos— a womb can contain the uncontainable. As Orthodox hymnography avers, she is more spacious than the heavens. So, too, the poet suggests, in its own, modest way, the poem might give birth to more, and more, and yet more than even the poet supposes.
