Sinopse

In "The Wild Bunch Boxed Set - 4 Westerns in One Volume (Illustrated Edition)," Clarence Mulford immerses readers in the gritty yet vibrant world of the American West, encapsulating the essence of frontier life through four thematically interconnected tales. Mulford's narratives are characterized by their sharp dialogue, richly drawn characters, and a keen awareness of the harsh realities of survival in a lawless land. This illustrated edition enhances the reading experience by interspersing evocative visuals that resonate with the narratives' rugged landscapes and complex personas, harkening back to the Golden Age of Western literature which flourished in the early 20th century. Amidst themes of camaraderie, honor, and the struggle against both nature and man, Mulford captures the spirit of the Wild West with both authenticity and flair. Clarence Mulford (1883-1956) is perhaps best remembered for his contribution to Western literature, yet his background as a journalist and storyteller of the frontier experience deeply informed his writings. His time spent in the American West provided him with a firsthand perspective on the cultural and social dynamics of the era, allowing him to create narratives that are both relatable and revealing. Mulford's ability to blend historical facts with engaging fiction lays a strong foundation for the moral complexities and vivid adventures that characterize this boxed set. "The Wild Bunch Boxed Set" is highly recommended for readers who appreciate a multidimensional portrayal of the Wild West, as well as for fans of American literature seeking a deeper understanding of the genre. Each story offers an opportunity to reflect on themes of loyalty, tragedy, and the true meaning of strength in an untamed world. This volume is a must-read for those longing for authentic adventures that echo the trials and triumphs of humanity in the face of adversity.

Richard Doddridge Blackmore was born on 7th June, 1825 at Longworth in Berkshire (now part of Oxfordshire), where his father, John Blackmore, was Curate-in-charge of the parish. His mother died a few months after his birth the victim of an outbreak of typhus. With this loss the family moved to Bushey, Hertfordshire, then on to their native Devon. His elder brother Richard (by a year), however, was taken by his aunt to live near Oxford. His father married again in 1831, whereupon Richard returned to live with them. With much of his childhood spent in the lush and pastoral "Doone Country" of Exmoor, and along the Badgworthy Water, Blackmore came to love the very countryside he immortalised in Lorna Doone. In November 1853 he married his wife Lucy. And the following year, 1854, his literary career began with a collection of Poems and for the next 15 years he would write in the winters and garden in the summers. In 1860 with inherited money he built a house in Teddington just outside of London and established a market garden for the cultivation of fruit. He loved horticulture but having little business experience could never really exploit it. However with the publication of Lorna Doone in 1869 he was catapulted to fame. And although he continued to write extensively nothing caught the public imagination quite like Lorna Doone. RD Blackmore died at Teddington on 20th January, 1900 after a long and painful illness, and was buried next to his wife in Teddington cemetery.

Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work “her own darling child” and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, “as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print.” The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen’s radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England.

Banned by the Nazis, the haunting novel At the Edge of the Night (Am Rande der Nacht), by the German writer Friedo Lampe, is a work of magic realism. This poignant book, beautifully translated by Simon Beattie, was, in Lampe’s own words, ‘born into a regime where it could not breathe’; he hoped that one day it might rise again. It evokes the sensations and impressions of a sultry September evening on the waterfront of Bremen, with its charm and tenderness, squalor and lust. The plot contains a stream of images with many characters: children, old and young people, men and women, townsfolk, performers, students and sailors. Its depiction of raw reality was unacceptable to the Nazis: the book was seized by them in December 1933 and withdrawn from sale.
At the Edge of the Night is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that offers a unique perspective on the experience of the Second World War. Lampe’s prose is lyrical and evocative, and his characters are complex and multi-dimensional. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the war or the human experience of conflict. It drew praise from Hermann Hesse, who first read it in 1933 and said that ‘what struck us at the time... as so beautiful and powerful has not paled, it has withstood; it proves itself with the best, and captivates and delights just as then’.
