Sinopse

A statistics professor tries to survive a series of gruesome and impossibly unlikely disasters linked to a supernaturally lucky Vegas casino, while dealing with her own erasure as a bisexual, in this chilling and quick-witted horror novel.
What's happening in Vegas isn't staying there...
Four years ago, an unthinkable disaster occurred—the Low-Probability Event. Eight million killed in a single day, each of them in improbable, bizarre ways: strangled by parade balloon ropes, torn apart by exploding manhole covers, attacked by a chimpanzee wielding a typewriter. A day that proved anything is possible, no matter the odds.
Vera, a former statistics and probability professor, lost everything that day, and she still struggles to make sense of the unbelievable catastrophe. To her, God is dead, and nothing matters anymore.
When Special Agent Layne shows up on Vera's doorstep, investigating a suspiciously—and statistically impossibly—lucky casino, he needs her help to prove the casino's role in the LPE. And offers Vera one last chance to make sense of an unlikely world.

A heinous murder sends Florida tabloid reporter Rayne Dawson sniffing for details. But when he discovers that a supernatural force may be responsible for both this death and a string of others, he enlists the help of the beautiful owner of the local history center. Together, they learn of an explosive element to the case that, like the tragic race riot that happened in the town a century before, the local citizenry wishes to bury and forget.
While continuing to battle his own personal demons, Rayne discovers that he is the only one able to stop the troubled spirit, and realizes he must find a way to destroy it before his own soul and those closest to him are lost forever. Dead Reckoning is a story of death and personal tragedy, showing how the indominable human will to survive comes face-to-face with evil that hides where we least expect it.

Title: At the Mountains of Madness — Part 8 of 12
    Author: H. P. Lovecraft
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1936
    Public Domain: Yes
Series Placement: Timeless Terrors No. 85 — Part 8 of 12
    Description:
In Part Eight of At the Mountains of Madness, the revelations carved into the ancient city’s walls give way to a far more immediate and visceral horror. What Dyer and Danforth have learned from the murals begins to take on dreadful relevance as their exploration pushes deeper into the labyrinthine ruins.
The story recorded in stone—of rebellion, degeneration, and catastrophic upheaval—no longer feels safely confined to the distant past. Subtle signs within the city suggest that not all of its history is ancient. Strange markings, unsettling absences, and hints of recent disturbance begin to erode the fragile comfort of academic detachment.
The vast Antarctic silence presses in as the explorers move forward, their scientific curiosity now overshadowed by mounting unease. The city feels less like a dead monument and more like a place suspended in uneasy stillness—its long-buried secrets not entirely at rest.
In this eighth installment of the 12-part complete audiobook series, Lovecraft masterfully shifts from cosmic history to creeping immediacy, as knowledge gives way to dread and the explorers confront the possibility that some ancient horrors may not be as extinct as they once believed.

Theodora Sarah Orne Jewett was born on 3rd September 1849 in South Berwick, Maine, to a family that had resided in New England for several generations.

From early childhood Jewett suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and one remedy was frequent walks which contributed to her life-long love of nature.

She was primarily educated at Miss Olive Rayne's school and then the Berwick Academy from where she graduated in 1866. But much of her time was also spent reading from the extensive collection of books in the family library.

In 1868 at age 19, she was published ‘Jenny Garrow's Lovers’ in the Atlantic Monthly, and from this grew a reputation that was lauded and admired by both her captivated audience and such other noted writers as William Dean Howells.

As well as novels and short stories she also wrote children’s books and poetry volumes. Jewett was also admired for the strong female characters who were as intelligent and able as any man around them.

In her personal life Jewett was attracted and attached to several women. Many of her poems reveal the intensity of her feelings towards them. Whether Jewett found physical love with them is open to debate but she often did find devoted and loving friendship, humor and literary encouragement. From 1881, after the death of James Fields, the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, she set up home with his widow, Annie, for the rest of her life in what was termed ‘a Boston Marriage’; the cohabitation of two wealthy women, independent of male financial support.

On her birthday in 1902, Jewett was involved in a carriage accident that effectively ended her literary career.

In March 1909 Sarah Orne Jewett was paralyzed by a stroke, and after another on 24th June she died in her South Berwick home. She was 59.
