Sinopsis

In "Shakespeare and Music," Christopher Wilson embarks on a scholarly exploration of the intricate relationship between the Bard's work and the musical landscape of his time. The book delves into the myriad ways music enhances the emotional palette of Shakespeare's plays, offering a detailed examination of the specific songs, motifs, and musical references interwoven throughout his texts. With a rigorous literary style, Wilson contextualizes these elements within the broader cultural framework of the Elizabethan era, combining close textual analysis with historical insights to craft a compelling narrative that resonates with both scholars and enthusiasts of Shakespeare. Christopher Wilson, a distinguished scholar with a passion for Shakespearean studies, brings a wealth of knowledge to this work. His extensive training in both literature and musicology has equipped him with a unique perspective, allowing him to interpret Shakespeare's plays through the lens of musical theory and historical context. Wilson's previous works have established him as a leading voice in Shakespearean criticism, and his expertise unearths deeper layers of meaning that are often overlooked in standard literary analyses. This book is highly recommended for students, theatre practitioners, and those interested in the interplay of literature and music. Wilson's insightful observations illuminate the transformative power of music in Shakespeare's work, encouraging readers to revisit the plays with new ears and freshly awakened sensibilities.

Of all the great actors of the 20th century, none personifies acting royalty more than Laurence Olivier, and some of this is simply due to the fact that he was actually knighted in 1947, along with a lengthy list of other honors that include being named a life peer in 1970 and admission to the Order of Merit in 1984. To speak of The Right Honourable Lord Laurence Olivier is not a figure of speech but rather a fact. Of course, in addition to the literal sense of the term, there is undeniably a manner in which Laurence Olivier qualifies as acting royalty, as it is not for nothing that Spencer Tracy once referred to Olivier as “the greatest actor in the English-speaking world” (Bacall). It is also important to note that Tracy refers to Olivier not as a film or theater actor specifically, because much of Olivier’s lofty standing derives from his ability to successfully navigate different mediums like stage, film, and television. The breadth of mediums in which he worked, the various roles he inhabited within them (actor, producer, director), and the formidable time span of his career lend Olivier’s career a scope of perhaps unmatched magnitude.
In the 1960s, the most popular actor in the world was Richard Burton, a hard-drinking Welshman who was nevertheless so professional that he was one of the preeminent stage performers of his day. In fact, he performed Shakespeare so magnificently that he was compared to British legend Laurence Olivier, and that success ultimately led to a film career that earned him 7 Academy Award nominations, as well as BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for Best Actor. Given his accomplishments on the stage and in Hollywood, Burton became one of the world’s most recognizable leading men, so it seemed fitting that he engaged in one of Hollywood’s most legendary romances with Elizabeth Taylor.

This vibrant book pulses with the beats of a new American South, probing the ways music, literature, and film have remixed southern identities for a post–civil rights generation. For scholar and critic Regina N. Bradley, Outkast’s work is the touchstone, a blend of funk, gospel, and hip-hop developed in conjunction with the work of other culture creators—including T.I., Kiese Laymon, and Jesmyn Ward. This work, Bradley argues, helps define new cultural possibilities for black southerners who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s and have used hip-hop culture to buffer themselves from the historical narratives and expectations of the civil rights era. André 3000, Big Boi, and a wider community of creators emerge as founding theoreticians of the hip-hop South, framing a larger question of how the region fits into not only hip-hop culture but also contemporary American society as a whole.

Chronicling Stankonia reflects the ways that culture, race, and southernness intersect in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Although part of southern hip-hop culture remains attached to the past, Bradley demonstrates how younger southerners use the music to embrace the possibility of multiple Souths, multiple narratives, and multiple points of entry to contemporary southern black identity.

    ABOUT THE FILM
Inglourious Basterds, directed by Quentin Tarantino, is a World War II film that blends historical fiction with intense action. It follows two main storylines: one about a group of Jewish-American soldiers, led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine, who aim to instill fear in the Nazi army by killing and scalping German soldiers. The other centers on Shosanna Dreyfus, a young Jewish woman who seeks revenge on the Nazis after they kill her family. Tarantino uses themes of vengeance, justice, and survival, blending intense violence with sharp dialogue and dark humor in a unique and stylized narrative.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

“Inglourious Basterds marked the first Quentin Tarantino film to win an Oscar for acting, with Christoph Waltz receiving the Best Supporting Actor award. Waltz went on to win another Oscar for his role in Django Unchained (2012).”

“In a roundtable discussion with Brad Pitt, Tarantino revealed that Til Schweiger, who was born and raised in Germany, had always refused to wear a Nazi uniform for a film. However, Schweiger agreed to do so on the condition that he could kill a Nazi in every scene where he wore one.”

“Tarantino spent nearly a decade working on the script for Inglourious Basterds.”

“Colonel Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz, speaks the most languages in the film, including English, French, German, and Italian.”

In this era of climate crisis, in which our very futures are at stake, sustainability is a global imperative. Yet we tend to associate sustainability, nature, and the environment with distant places, science, and policy. The truth is that everything is environmental, from transportation to taxes, work to love, cities to cuisine.

This book is the first to examine contemporary Singapore from an ecocultural lens, looking at the ways that Singaporean life and culture is deeply entangled with the nonhuman lives that flourish all around us. The authors represent a new generation of cultural critics and environmental thinkers, who will inherit the future we are creating today. From chilli crab to Tiger Beer, Changi Airport to Pulau Semakau, O-levels to orang minyak films, these essays offer fresh perspectives on familiar subjects, prompting us to recognise the incredible urgency of climate change and the need to transform our ways of thinking, acting, learning, living, and governing so as to maintain a stable planet and a decent future.
