This book offers a comprehensive overview of biochar and its applications in sustainable agriculture. The book begins by introducing the concept of biochar and its historical use in agriculture. Next, the content deals with the production methods and properties of biochar, providing insights into its chemical composition and physical characteristics. Subsequent chapters explore the diverse applications of biochar in agriculture, including its role in soil fertility improvement, carbon sequestration, and pollution remediation. Case studies and practical examples illustrate the effectiveness of biochar across different agricultural settings. The authors also discuss the potential challenges and future directions of biochar research and application. This book is essential reading for agronomists, soil scientists, environmental scientists, farmers, policymakers, and anyone interested in sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation strategies.ReadershipAgronomists, soil scientists, environmental scientists, farmers, policymakers, and anyone interested in sustainable agriculture and climate change initiatives.

An exploration of humanity’s relationship with ice since the dawn of civilization, Of Ice and Men reminds us that only by understanding this unique substance can we save the ice on our planet—and perhaps ourselves.

Ice tells a story. It writes it in rock. It lays it down, snowfall by snowfall at the ends of the earth where we may read it like the rings on a tree. It tells our planet’s geological and climatological tale.

Ice tells another story too: a story about us. It is a tale packed with swash-buckling adventure and improbable invention, peopled with driven, eccentric, often brilliant characters. It tells how our species has used ice to reshape the world according to our needs and our desires: how we have survived it, harvested it, traded it, bent science to our will to make it—and how in doing so we have created globe-spanning infrastructures that are entirely dependent upon it.

And even after we have done all that, we take ice so much for granted that we barely notice it.

Ice has supercharged the modern world. It has allowed us to feed ourselves and cure ourselves in ways unimaginable two hundred years ago. It has enabled the global population to rise from less than 1 billion to nearly 7½ billion—which just happens to cover the same period of time as humanity has harvested, manufactured, and distributed ice on an industrial scale.

And yet the roots of our fascination with ice and its properties run much deeper than the recent past.

The news about wildlife is dire—more than 900 species have been wiped off the planet since industrialization. Against this bleak backdrop, however, there are also glimmers of hope and crucial lessons to be learned from animals that have defied global trends toward extinction: bears in Italy, bison in North America, whales in the Atlantic. These populations are back from the brink, some of them in numbers unimaginable in a century. How has this happened? What shifts in thinking did it demand? In crisp, transporting prose, Christopher Preston reveals the mysteries and challenges at the heart of these resurgences.

Drawing on compelling personal stories from the researchers, Indigenous people, and activists who know the creatures best, Preston weaves together a gripping narrative of how some species are taking back vital, ecological roles. Each section of the book offers a philosophical shift in how humans ought to think about animals, passionately advocating for the changes in attitude necessary for wildlife recovery.

Tenacious Beasts is quintessential nature writing for the Anthropocene, touching on different facets of ecological restoration from Indigenous knowledge to rewilding practices. More important, perhaps, the book offers a road map—and a measure of hope—for a future in which humans and animals can once again coexist.

From about 12,900 to 11,700 before present (BP), near Ice Age conditions returned to the Northern Hemisphere of the planet. It was a sudden shift from the warm temperatures that had prevailed for nearly 2,000 years. This period is referred to by archaeologists, geologists, and earth scientists as the Greenland Stadial, but it is more commonly known as the Younger Dryas. The Younger Dryas marked the end of the last glacial period, the end of the Pleistocene Era, and the beginning of the Holocene Era, which is the current era. It was a period of great change, when climate change happened quite quickly, directly affecting the flora, fauna, and humans of the Northern Hemisphere in the process. The impact on the human populations was perhaps most important because, in some places, it virtually destroyed emerging cultures, while in other places, it might have propelled humans to develop new survival traits and technologies later used to move humanity into the Neolithic era. Although scholars now know quite a bit about the Younger Dryas, many elements of it are still debated. Other aspects serve as a predictor of what humans can expect in the future.
There is, however, still plenty of information about the Younger Dryas that remains unknown or open to debate. Not all scholars agree on the dates of the Younger Dryas or how long it lasted. Even more controversial are the alternate theories about what caused the Younger Dryas and the effect it had on the Northern Hemisphere’s bio-populations. This book examines the background of the Younger Dryas, its effects on bio-populations, and how it contributed to the emergence of the Neolithic Era. Alternative theories will be examined and compared to more standard ideas currently prevailing in academia.

Are you interested in getting a better understanding of the COBOL programming language?
Do you seek to know how COBOL interacts with other database management systems?
Would you like to expand your knowledge base of database systems?
COBOL Database Interaction is a set of techniques that allow us to interact with databases. COBOL Database Interaction is used to retrieve, store, and modify specific records in a database table. It is done by modifying row values. This feature of COBOL allows us to perform everyday tasks such as deleting or updating records in a database table while restoring the original state of the data after the updated records have been deleted.
COBOL Database Interaction is used to update records in a database table selectively. It is done by modifying row values without affecting other records in the same table. COBOL Database Interaction allows us to perform tasks such as deleting or updating specific, preexisting records, and also provides us with a mechanism by which we can create new, empty records (without having to create them manually) before saving them to their original data tables.
Why is it necessary to understand COBOL database interaction?
Understanding the basics of COBOL database interaction is essential in the technology field because COBOL has been used in many industries and is still in use today. In addition, this knowledge can be applied to many software applications and programs.
