Sinopse

'the prose is spare and poetic, at once plain and rich, musical in its rhythms of speech and clear descriptions... A beautiful, understated first novel' – The New York Times
'A first novel of consummate skill' – The Sunday Times
'witty, compassionate, and brilliantly readable' – Diana Wallace
A new edition of this classic Welsh novel with an introduction by Professor Diana Wallace
Funny, lyrical and poignant, Shifts is a novel of the decline of industry and of the south Wales working class in the 1970s. It broke new ground on its appearance in combining a real, close-up depiction of work and ordinary lives with symbolic power and a wider imaginative reach.
Jack Priday, down-at-heel and almost down and out, returns to his hometown towards the end of the 1970s after a decade's absence, just looking for a way to get by. His life becomes entangled with those of old friends Keith, Judith and O, and with the slow death throes of the male-dominated heavy industries that have shaped and defined the region and its people for almost two centuries.
As circumstances shift around them, the principals are forced to find some understanding of them and to confront their own secret natures. From multiple viewpoints, Shifts is a slowburning, controlled and intense examination of the relationship between our inner lives, the people around us and the forces of history.

"With spring’s arrival in Goosebush, Lilly and the Beautification Committee turn their eyes to new projects. A cleanup of the historic Goosebush Cemetery may be in order after Lilly and Delia find the plots there sorely neglected and inexplicably rearranged. Lilly soon discovers that Whitney Dunne-Bradford snapped up custodianship of the graveyard once she inherited Bradford Funeral Homes. But before Lilly can get to the bottom of the tombstone tampering, she stumbles upon Whitney’s body at the Jayne family mausoleum. Although it at first appears Whitney died by suicide, Lilly has doubts, and apparently, so does Chief of Police Bash Haywood, who quickly opens a murder investigation. Plenty of folks in town had bones to pick with Whitney, including her stepdaughter, Sasha, and funeral-home employee Dewey Marsh—all three recently charged with illegal business practices. But when the homicide inquiry suddenly targets an old friend, Lilly and the Garden Squad must rally to exhume the truth before the real killer buries it forever."

In a rural Minnesota town with deep German roots, people tend to their duties without fanfare or expectation, doing the work that needs to be done to keep the small community humming.
A lyrical collection of 10 intertwined short stories, The Winter Bees: Fiction introduces characters whose quiet, blue-collar lives and relationships turn into journeys of personal discovery, meaning, love, and hope. Among them is Ana, the ruby-lipped, gray-haired bartender who cooks batches of sauerkraut for patrons, keeps their glasses full, and hoards memories of a painful past in her squirrel-infested apartment above the saloon; lifelong bachelor Herman, a farmer and radio-controlled airplane enthusiast who pines for his best friend's wife across the neighboring cornfields; the bookstore owner, Shirley, who surprises herself with a moment of cruelty following an accident; a ranting, mentally ill woman known by everyone in town as The Pee Lady; and Virgil, the beloved school bus driver who finds joy in a lost-and-found box. These character-driven, poetic stories illuminate people whose commitment to duty often means personal restraint, sacrifice, and heartbreak.
"These rich, interwoven stories are where great literature comes from: the closely observed heartbreaks and joys of ordinary people's lives." - Will Weaver, author of Sweet Land: New & Collected Stories
"The stories are crystalline, beautiful, delicate, soulful, and ephemeral. This book is nothing short of a small, rare marvel." - Nickolas Butler, internationally bestselling author of Shotgun Lovesongs and The Hearts of Men
