A funny, playful salute to the value of books and libraries from the New York Times best-selling and beloved author Carmen Agra Deedy.
Sunrise Elementary School had a BIG problem. Their new librarian was a real Dragon!
When Miss Lotta Scales read an ad for a thick-skinned librarian with a burning love of books, she knew she was perfect for the job. After all, who could guard books better than a real dragon?
She took her job seriously: hundreds of new, clean books replaced the old, smudged ones. The thought of sticky little fingers touching and clutching her precious books made her hot under the collar! The principal tried to reason with her, and she singed his tie. The teachers sent a delegation, including sweet Miss Lemon, who told her “the library belongs to the children,” but they were all sent away scorched.
When nearsighted Molly Brickmeyer stumbled into the library looking for her glasses, she bumped into a shelf, and a book tumbled into her hands. As she began to read aloud, and the children came to listen, they came face to face with Miss Lotta Scales. Could a book read out loud temper the flames of the school’s hot-headed librarian?

Fíasól is a ten-year-old fixer. And more than that—she’s the head of her own Rescue Squad. Ingó is special advisor to the squad. He’s two years older than Fíasól, but that doesn’t matter. They’re the best of best friends. Even so, Ingó will sometimes say things like: “You’ll get it one day, Fíasól, when you’re my age.”
Fíasól lives in a little room—The Nook, she calls it—in a house on a street called Green Lane in a town called Grassville. She lives with her mom and dad. She also lives with her sister Bidda, who is a seventeen-year-old mirror connoisseur. Bidda owns thirty-seven mirrors that hang all over her room. The mirrors are long and skinny, short and wide, gilded with gold-leaf and adorned with pearls. There are mirrors fitted with magnifying glasses and mirrors with little lights on them. All day, she inspects herself in her mirrors, applying color and sweeping brushes across her face like the most accomplished of painters. Coach Lolli is often in Bidda’s room, too, but then, she locks the door.
Fíasól also lives with her sister Pippa. Pippa is a thirteen-year-old book junkie. She can read while walking, eating—even biking and swinging. That’s not very safe, though. A lot has changed on Green Lane. But Fíasól always has plenty to do. That hasn’t changed at all.
“I really have way too much to do,” she says. “The Rescue Squad puts a lot of stress on me—it’s an awful lot of work. Which is why I don’t have time to pick up my room. When I don’t have anything left to do, I’ll pick up.”
Bidda says that Lolli isn’t her boyfriend. She says he’s just a friend who is helping with her homework.
“You know, that’s strange,” says Dad. “Peculiar that you need so much help with your homework all of a sudden.”
“They hold hands,” murmurs Pippa, looking up from the book she’s reading with her mouth full during dinner. “I’ve seen them when they’re getting off the bus.”
