Sinopse

This is the charming and poignant account of twenty-five years spent in Orkney. After her marriage to an islander, Christine Muir went to live on the tiny island of North Ronaldsay, where she and her husband brought up their four children and ran a small croft.
Following the seasons though the year, Orkney Days is full of observations of the natural world at their doorstep. Beautiful descriptions of the island and its flora and fauna – from wildflowers and medicinal herbs to seals and seabirds – are mingled with memories of a young family growing up and the rhythms of daily life far from the bustle of the modern world. There is much too about the work involved in running their croft and the cattle and sheep that are its mainstay, about the traditions and lore of the island which stretch back over countless generations, and about the modern developments which changed it forever.

The Unpunctured Being: Vedic Wisdom for Sovereignty in Life is a transformative memoir that unveils the journey from the entanglements of modern living to attaining self-empowerment and sovereignty. It chronicles the author's experiences of being ensnared by progressive culture for decades, only to realise the toll it took on her inner well-being. In a moment of inspiration, with all aspects of her life in disarray, she turned to the timeless wisdom of the Vedic culture. Through embracing the Vedic lifestyle, she found her fragmented life coming together, enabling her to live with empowerment and experience the fulfilment that comes from sovereignty.
This poignant and relevant book delves into each segment of the Wheel of Life—personal growth, love and relationships, health, physical environment, wealth and finance, fun and recreation, friends and family, and education and career—and compares the contemporary cultural approach to the timeless Vedic teachings. By doing so, it empowers readers to consciously address disempowerment and take full control of their lives.

This must-listen book tells the chilling story of an American-born Soviet spy in the atom bomb project in World War II, perfect for fans of The Americans.

George Koval was born in Iowa. In 1932, his parents, Russian Jews who had emigrated because of anti-Semitism, decided to return home to live out their socialist ideals. George, who was as committed to socialism as they were, went with them. There, he was recruited by the Soviet Army as a spy and returned to the US in 1940. A gifted science student, he enrolled at Columbia University, where he knew scientists soon to join the Manhattan Project, America's atom bomb program. After being drafted into the US Army, George used his scientific background and connections to secure an assignment at a site where plutonium and uranium were produced to fuel the atom bomb. There, and later in a second top-secret location, he had full access to all facilities, and he passed highly sensitive information to Moscow.

The ultimate sleeper agent, Koval was an all-American boy who had played baseball, loved Walt Whitman's poetry, and mingled freely with fellow Americans. After the war he got away without a scratch. It is indisputable that his information landed in the right hands in Moscow. In 1949, Soviet scientists produced a bomb identical to America's years earlier than US experts expected.

The World of Juliet Kinzie -...

When Juliette Kinzie first visited Chicago in 1831, it was anything but a city. An outpost in the shadow of Fort Dearborn, it had no streets, no sidewalks, no schools, no river-spanning bridges. And with two hundred disconnected residents, it lacked any sense of community. In the decades that followed, not only did Juliette witness the city’s transition from Indian country to industrial center, but she was instrumental in its development.

Juliette is one of Chicago’s forgotten founders. Early Chicago is often presented as “a man’s city,” but women like Juliette worked to create an urban and urbane world, often within their own parlors. With The World of Juliette Kinzie, we finally get to experience the rise of Chicago from the view of one of its most important founding mothers.

Ann Durkin Keating offers a moving portrait of a trailblazing and complicated woman. Keating takes us to the corner of Cass and Michigan (now Wabash and Hubbard), Juliette’s home base. Through Juliette’s eyes, our understanding of early Chicago expands from a city of boosters and speculators to include the world that women created in and between households. We see the development of Chicago society, first inspired by cities in the East and later coming into its own midwestern ways. We also see the city become a community, as it developed its intertwined religious, social, educational, and cultural institutions. Keating draws on a wealth of sources, including hundreds of Juliette’s personal letters, allowing Juliette to tell much of her story in her own words.

The World of Juliette Kinzie offers a new perspective on Chicago’s past and is a fitting tribute to one of the first women historians in the United States.

True stories from a forensic psychologist in prisons and out.

‘The most dangerous people I met weren’t monsters. They were broken children wearing adult faces.’

Pamela Nathan, clinical and forensic psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist, uncovers the inner worlds of society’s most dangerous and broken—whether behind bars or hidden in plain sight.

In Pain Bleeds Crime, she shares twenty-three gripping true stories from her decades working in maximum-security prisons, courts, and forensic hospitals. The crimes are shocking—murder, rape, paedophilia, assault, fetishism, bestiality, and more—but what lies beneath is often even more confronting.

Each offender, whether male, female or transgender, reveals a hidden world shaped by trauma, pain, and silence. Pamela enters these inner worlds to feel and then to have revealed the internal crime scenes, to see what made them break—mentally, emotionally, morally. These aren’t excuses. They’re revelations.

You’ll come face-to-face with people whose crimes horrified the public—people who insist they’re not violent, or that “it just happened”—and come face-to-face with the dark truth: the past never really goes away. With unflinching honesty and rare insight, Pamela shows how the past never really stays buried—and how behind every act of violence, there’s a story waiting to be told.

Brutally honest, deeply unsettling, and impossible to forget, Pain Bleeds Crime is a journey into the darkest parts of humanity.

‘Mad, bad, or sad—when we listen to the story, we see the person.’

‘A chilling exploration of the trauma and pain behind the most heinous crimes.’
