There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.

This short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky was first published in 1848. A man walking past a wedding is reminded of a children's New Year's Eve party he attended 5 years previously – a party that was clearly an excuse for the parents to make advantageous connections in a casual setting. As an outsider at the party, he was able to observe the guests in greater detail than most, and took particular note of the children playing by the Christmas tree, and the social hierarchy they unwittingly participated in. This recording is based on the 1918 translation by Constance Garnett.

The first rule when trying to survive prison is to find people who are going to watch your back. Sometimes alliances like this are made in the weirdest situations. For Mo, Royal, Emil, and Ascada, the last place they wanted to be was in prison together, but as fate would have it, they all became inmates of the Walsh Facility for Women. As different as they all are, they do have one thing in common—Spencer. Spencer is known on the streets as a hustler with nothing to lose. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself, and that includes the children that he’s fathered with three of the women who are locked up.
But when Spencer gets arrested by the feds, all sorts of drama jumps off, putting the girls in a situation that they can’t get out of alone. The last thing any of the girls wanted to do was “bury the hatchet” and be friends, but they will have to in order to get out of this mess alive.

He was just the caretaker, the quiet young man who kept the grounds of the exclusive, gated community pristine. Owen Collins liked the solitude, the predictable rhythm of his work, and the distance it kept between him and the wealthy residents of The Pines. That fragile peace shatters one foggy morning when he discovers the body of a prominent resident floating in the community’s ornamental lake, a discovery that makes him the first person of interest in a sudden, violent death.
As the police, led by the relentlessly skeptical Detective James Carter, circle closer, Owen’s own past begins to surface in whispered rumors and pointed questions. The idyllic neighborhood reveals itself as a web of hidden affairs, bitter rivalries, and dangerous secrets, with several residents having clear motives for murder. Someone is watching Owen’s every move, leaving subtle threats among his tools and manipulating evidence to frame him for the crime he stumbled upon.
Trapped in a tightening noose of suspicion, Owen must untangle the truth behind the killing to save himself. To clear his name, he is forced to investigate the very people who employ him, digging into lives of polished perfection to expose the rot beneath. In a place where everyone has something to hide, finding the real killer means confronting the terrifying possibility that he was chosen to find the body for a reason.
