Sinopse

Operational Intelligence: The Power of Digital, Data and AI is a practical and values-led guide for education leaders navigating the realities of digital transformation.
Schools and colleges are awash with data. Attendance records, assessment results, safeguarding logs, financial reports, surveys and system analytics generate a constant stream of information. Yet despite this abundance, many institutions remain "data rich but insight poor" - managing fragmented systems, duplicated processes and disconnected reports that create noise rather than clarity.
This book offers a structured pathway out of that complexity.
Drawing on real-world leadership experience in further education, Chris Loveday sets out a coherent six-layer framework that moves institutions from scattered systems to fully integrated operational intelligence. Beginning with strong digital strategy and governance, the book explores how to build reliable foundations: clean, connected data; cloud infrastructure; a unified data warehouse; and a shared semantic layer that ensures everyone speaks the same data language. Only then does it introduce dashboards, analytics and AI - positioned not as shiny solutions, but as tools that amplify professional judgement.
At its core, Operational Intelligence argues that technology should serve people, not replace them. AI is framed as a catalyst for clarity, efficiency and fairness, freeing leaders and staff to focus on what matters most: teaching, support and student success. The book tackles the cultural and ethical dimensions of transformation alongside the technical ones, addressing governance, trust, workload, sustainability and proportionate use of automation.
Through practical examples, implementation lessons and reflective questions at the end of each chapter, leaders are guided to:
Develop a clear digital strategy aligned to institutional values
Design a coherent and scalable digital ecosystem
Migrate responsibly to the cloud
Integrate data into a single source of truth
Define meaningful KPIs that drive improvement
Embed dashboards and AI insights into everyday workflows
Lead cultural change with confidence and integrity
This is not a technical manual. It is a leadership blueprint for building institutions that think, act and improve intelligently.
For vice principals, headteachers, governors, CFOs, CIOs and digital leaders, Operational Intelligence provides the architecture, language and confidence needed to move beyond digital patchwork and towards purposeful, sustainable transformation.
Because the future of education will not be defined by how much data we hold - but by how wisely we use it.

Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (January 6, 1946 to July 7, 2006) was an English singer, songwriter, guitarist and co-founder of Pink Floyd. He was the band's frontman and primary songwriter for their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), and portions of their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). In April 1968, Barrett was ousted from Pink Floyd amid speculation of mental illness and his use of psychedelic drugs. In 1972, Barrett retired from public life and guarded his privacy until his death of pancreatic cancer in 2006. The following is from an August 1967 interview.

Volume 1 of Three Wise Monkeys explores the Portuguese colonisation of Mozambique, and the gradual transformation of the colony into a reservoir of cheap labour, first during the Atlantic slave trade and then during the rise of the voracious Rand mining industry.
Mozambique became locked into financial dependence on South Africa. The South African mining industry came to own significant parts of the harbour infrastructure of Lourenço Marques. The mining industry's insatiable appetite for pit props gave rise to a globalised trade in timber flowing in from the US, Scandinavia and Australia via new shipping lines to the port of Lourenço Marques.
After World War I, the South African gold-mining industry and Mozambique's weak 'central bank', the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, operating alongside the South African Reserve Bank, a branch of the Royal Mint and the Rand Refinery, effectively controlled the economic fortunes and destiny of South Africa's neighbour. Mozambique was colonised twice over – first by Portugal and then by South Africa.

In the tradition of Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal, this compassionate work helps individuals develop a more accepting view of dying while teaching them what to expect and how to navigate the healthcare system at the end of life.

In elderhood, the health care system has a narrow view of how to provide care. It focuses on extending a patient's life at all costs, with an over-reliance on machines and procedures, instead of caring holistically for the person. Accordingly, many of us will likely spend our final weeks in long-term care facilities or an ICU.

Dying at home, peacefully, and surrounded by family is almost impossible in our world—and our fear of death is a major contributor to this impossibility. Fittingly, the central idea of this book is that in old age, or when facing a terminal diagnosis, it is more important to understand your life rather than to extend it. While this may seem simple, its implications are profound.

A natural death means accepting that, at some point, we are old enough or sick enough to die. In our cynical and overly clinical age, it is difficult to reflect on the meaning of one's life, but that kind of honest introspection is exactly what we need. Accordingly, The Journey’s End seeks to help people manage their healthcare, their expectations, and their decisions in the final phase of life.

The Mind of the Minister -...

Britain's most important relationship, between civil servants and ministers, has reached breaking point. Drawing on interviews with former government ministers and Permanent Secretaries – including Vince Cable, Caroline Flint, Rory Stewart, Philip Rutnam, Simon McDonald and Una O'Brien – The Mind of the Minister provides expert guidance and recommendations for how this vital relationship can improve.
Centuries of carefully built trust and mutual understanding have been undermined and strained in recent years, not least by mismanagement at the highest level, a scorched-earth approach to constitutional norms and the testing of civil service integrity. This relationship now needs urgent attention.
Ministers, famously, begin the job with an hour's notice and often know little about the department they've landed in. They bring energy, drive and optimism for change, but over time, these ambitions can be drowned by reality, accountability and crises, as well as the distractions of promotion, demotion or a changing political landscape.
Civil servants, on the other hand, serve the government of the day and remain in post while ministers come and go. They must be ready to adjust and impartially support a minister of any political persuasion or personality.
How does this partnership really work in practice? How do both sides adjust to the different chapters in a ministerial lifespan? What happens if rule makers become rule breakers without repercussions? This compelling book lifts the curtain on the minister–civil servant partnership, highlighting that this crucial relationship must improve – for the sake of our democracy.

God gave Us a Special Needs...

    Lloyd C. Darby Ph.D

I wrote this book because I wanted the world to know the story of my special needs son Lloyd C. Darby lll. Affectionately known as DJ, which stands for Darby Junior. When people triumph over their circumstances as my wife and I have, there are usually hidden lessons others can benefit from contained within the events. However, if we don’t share our stories with the world, no one will ever hear about them. That’s why it is so important to share our successes, and failures, to let others know they are not alone. Rather, a part of a bigger picture that is so significant, their message alone has the power to set people free. Whether through books, video, television, or the radio, we must communicate our thoughts and promote ideas and principles that produce a better society for all people. Due to the painful memories, and recreating various parts of my true story, I needed to make this book simple to understand. It is my sincere effort that this information can be absorbed quickly and to the point.
This is the story of a child who was born against the odds, raised against the odds, and lives against the odds. Although he is my son, he is also my hero and role model. It is on his behalf that I write his story and for all the parents in the world with so-called “special needs” children. I have truly learned the powers who labeled these children “special needs” focus more on their inabilities rather than their abilities. More importantly, life is about victories, achievements, successes, opportunities, pride, honor, shortcomings, and never-ending loving hearts. When it comes to these qualities, special needs children possess them naturally.
