Sinopsis

An epic family saga that follows a legacy of faith, values, and traditions passed down through seven generations of an African American family, Revelations takes readers on an emotional journey of 170 years filled with drama, suspense, trials, triumphs, and tear-jerking events in the life stories recounted by five women from different generations:

Claudia - an idealistic New York journalist is motivated in 2004 to investigate her family's past when shocking 30-year-old secrets are exposed and threaten to disrupt her seemingly perfect family.

Sarah - Claudia's mother confesses to a history of manipulation and deceit rooted in tragic losses that compelled her to take charge of her life in 1963 at age 15. She entrusts Claudia with the private journals of family matriarchs from three prior generations.

Juliette - Claudia's great-great-grandmother must decide in 1885 at 17 whether to move North and easily pass for white or to live out her days as a Black woman in Mississippi.

Bea - Claudia's great-grandmother, Juliette's daughter-in-law, is forced to flee Mississippi pregnant in 1916 to escape death at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan and to flee Ohio pregnant in 1919 to escape violence threatened by labor union organizers.

Mary - Claudia's grandmother, Bea's daughter, faces harsh consequences in the 1940's- '50's for daring to think she should have the same options as men in managing her personal and professional life.

Through their personal accounts, Claudia gleans their unique perspectives on America's history and social evolution from 19th Century Mississippi to 21st Century New York. She easily relates to their stories as they address universal human needs, desires, goals, and challenges that transcend time and location. Reflecting on the revelations of her ancestors' narratives, Claudia discovers surprising truths about herself that help her resolve her personal issues.

The harrowing true story of the abuses two boys suffered at a Florida reform school and how they came together fifty years later to confront their attackers.

“[The Boys of the Dark] reads seamlessly… . . . A worthy exploration of a regrettably long-lasting true-crime nightmare.” —Kirkus Reviews

Michael O’McCarthy and Robert W. Straley were teens when they were termed “incorrigible youth” by authorities and ordered to attend the Florida School for Boys. They discovered in Marianna, the “City of Southern Charm,” an immaculately groomed campus that looked more like an idyllic university than a reform school. But hidden behind the gates of the Florida School for Boys was a hell unlike any they could have imagined. The school’s guards and administrators acted as their jailers and tormentors. The boys allegedly bore witness to assault, rape, and possibly even murder.

For fifty years, both men—and countless others like them—carried their torment in silence. But a series of unlikely events brought O’McCarthy, now a successful rights activist, and Straley together, and they became determined to expose the Florida School for Boys for what they believed it to be: a youth prison with a century-long history of abuse. They embarked upon a campaign that would change their lives and inspire others.

Robin Gaby Fisher, a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and author of the New York Times–bestselling After the Fire, collaborates with Straley and O’McCarthy to offer a riveting account of their harrowing ordeal. The book goes beyond the story of the two men to expose the truth about a century-old institution and a town that adopted a Nuremberg-like code of secrecy and a government that failed to address its own wrongdoing. What emerges is a tale of strength, resolve, and vindication in the face of the kinds of terror few can imagine.

“Haunting and disturbing. The voices of the victims will forever touch my heart. To turn a deaf ear to this type of injustice is to give permission for it to continue. As a people, as a society, we should be outraged.” —Jennifer Thompson, coauthor of Picking Cotton

“This deeply moving story is highly recommended to readers of heart-wrenching memoirs, 20th-century American studies, or true crime.” —Library Journal

What do you do when you need help or have questions about raising a child? You could talk to another parent, find a book on the subject, or search the Internet, with the hope of finding helpful information. But what do you do when the "child" is your parent?
I am talking about raising a parent with dementia. Your own parent is slowly reverting back to childhood but remaining in a fully aged body. It's a whole new endeavor, taking full responsibility for someone who once raised you.
Many years ago, I had to place my mom in 24-hour assisted living care. She no longer recognized her surroundings. If she left her home, she could not find her way back. She could no longer remember to take her medications properly. She had even forgotten her own children. It was a very painful time in my life. Witnessing my mother losing her memories broke my heart. I began to journal through the pain. The blank page was a good place for my fears and frustrations. While I was writing not only did I sense a need to vent my emotions, but I began recognizing how many other people must be going through this same journey, and how painful it must be for them.
So here we are. I am hoping and praying that the words you are about to read will somehow brighten your day, warm your heart, and help you feel a little less alone in your journey of raising a parent with dementia.
What brings me to these pages of stories is that I continued to be taught about life by my mother. As she changed from the mother that I knew growing up, through the years of watching her slowly lose her memory while her body stayed strong, she still had lessons for me to learn.
My desire is to share those insights with you. I hope they will be a comfort.

An inspiring memoir of survival, How My Brain Saved My Life Twice chronicles triumph over suicide, brain injury, and disability. This audiobook is for readers drawn to resilience, recovery, and the creative spirit.
Amy Stacey Curtis was a practicing installation artist widely recognized and awarded for an 18-year project presented throughout nine abandoned Maine mills. Soon after completing this ambitious opus, her brain was attacked. For 22 months, Amy would see horrific nonstop images of her suicide, this unrelenting psychosis soon accompanied by a debilitating head-to-toe loss of muscle control. Amy’s arms and legs flailed, her hands and wrists curled, her head and neck swayed, and her cheeks and mouth twisted, requiring the use of a wheelchair, severely impacting her speech, and cutting her off from her community. After two psychiatric wards, eight antipsychotic drugs, and 15 months of misdiagnosing doctors, it was finally determined that Amy’s brain was injured by past Lyme disease she never knew she had.
Amy’s brain knew just what to do to protect her, to survive the unthinkable, and to heal what was broken—twice. Alternating between past and present—one saga that begins when Amy is seven as her father threatens to kill her, her three younger brothers, and himself, the other when Amy is 46 as a virus becomes determined to kill her by her own hand—this dual-timeline against-all-odds memoir chronicles Amy’s battles and triumphs over suicide, relentless childhood trauma, and life-altering disability, with self-advocacy, perseverance, will, and a little humor.
Amy hopes to alter the perception of suicide as something under our control and to help others in the midst of their own fight. She likewise shares her fights and wins regarding brain injury, as the general population and medical community don't yet seem to understand the damage Lyme disease can do, whether treated or not.

Where do we learn math: From rules in a textbook? From logic and deduction? Not really, according to mathematician Eugenia Cheng: we learn it from human curiosity—most importantly, from asking questions. This may come as a surprise to those who think that math is about finding the one right answer, or those who were told that the “dumb” question they asked just proved they were bad at math. But Cheng shows why people who ask questions like “Why does 1 + 1 = 2?” are at the very heart of the search for mathematical truth.

Is Math Real? is a much-needed repudiation of the rigid ways we’re taught to do math, and a celebration of the true, curious spirit of the discipline. Written with intelligence and passion, Is Math Real? brings us math as we’ve never seen it before, revealing how profound insights can emerge from seemingly unlikely sources.
