The God from the Machine is a short story by Rudyard Kipling: The Inexpressibles gave a ball. They borrowed a seven-pounder from the Gunners, and wreathed it with laurels, and made the dancing-floor plate-glass and provided a supper, the like of which had never been eaten before, and set two sentries at the door of the room to hold the trays of programme-cards. My friend, Private Mulvaney, was one of the sentries, because he was the tallest man in the regiment. When the dance was fairly started the sentries were released, and Private Mulvaney went to curry favor with the Mess Sergeant in charge of the supper. Whether the Mess Sergeant gave or Mulvaney took, I cannot say.

Victor-Marie Hugo (26 February 1802 - 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, essayist, playwright, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. During a literary career that spanned more than sixty years, he wrote abundantly in an exceptional variety of genres: lyrics, satires, epics, philosophical poems, epigrams, novels, history, critical essays, political speeches, funeral orations, diaries, and letters public and private, as well as dramas in verse and prose.VOLUME 2: COSETTE: Last year (1861), on a beautiful May morning, a traveller, the person who is telling this story, was coming from Nivelles, and directing his course towards La Hulpe. He was on foot. He was pursuing a broad paved road, which undulated between two rows of trees, over the hills which succeed each other, raise the road and let it fall again, and produce something in the nature of enormous waves.

Charles Pooter in the “Diary of a Nobody” is no mere figure of fun, no suburban snob to be sniggered at.
He is a very contented man. Contended in his marriage, devoted to his boss and more than happy in his new six roomed suburban residence. By his own admission he makes no claims to grandiosity or social climbing.
As his diary progresses, we find ourselves cheering him on as he navigates many an awkward situation amongst the regularities of his quiet life.
George & Weedon Grossmith’s classic book has been amusing generations of readers for over 100 years, and the frustrated Charles Pooter is the forerunner of comic creations such as Basil Fawlty and David Brent.
Simon Hester narrates with original music.
