Sinopse

In 'Modern Broods; Or, Developments Unlooked For,' Charlotte M. Yonge intricately weaves a narrative that delves into the complexities of familial relationships and societal expectations in Victorian England. The novel's literary style is characterized by its rich character development and keen observation of social mores, exploring themes of duty, love, and inner conflict among its protagonists. Yonge employs a blend of realism and moral discourse, reflecting the theatrical tensions of her time, effectively critiquing the evolving modernity that confronts traditional values. Charlotte M. Yonge, a seminal figure of Victorian literature, was known for her deep personal convictions and her belief in the moral purpose of fiction. Having grown up in a period of significant social reform, Yonge's dedication to women's education and her engagement with various issues of her day greatly influenced her writings. Her extensive literary career was marked by a commitment to portray both the struggles and triumphs of individuals navigating the rapidly changing societal landscape, which is vividly illustrated in this novel. Readers seeking a thoughtful exploration of the human spirit against the backdrop of societal change will find 'Modern Broods' a rewarding experience. Yonge's ability to capture the emotional and intellectual dilemmas of her characters invites introspection, making this work not only a reflection of its time but also a timeless inquiry into personal growth and moral responsibility.

Seven days to make her remember. Seven nights to make her beg.
She was my salvation—until she became my destruction.
Once, I would have bled for her.
    Now, I burn for revenge.
She and her father didn’t just betray me. They destroyed me. Left me broken, bleeding, crawling my way out of hell. And now, years later, she’s back—wrapped up in a satin bow with a convenient case of amnesia?
Nice try, princess. But I don’t believe in fairy tales.
I bought her at an auction. Now I own her for a week.
Seven days to make her remember exactly who she was to me.
Seven nights to make her pay for every lie.
And when I’ve broken her, when I’ve ruined her the way she ruined me…
She’ll beg me to keep her.
    And I will.
Because after seven days, I won’t be able to let her go.
    Not now. Not ever.
Just seven days to make her mine. Forever.

Fleeing Germany just before World War I, B. Traven settled in Mexico. His character driven tale of greed is the inspiration of the Academy Award-winning film, directed by John Huston, and starring Humphrey Bogart.
Grittier and darker than the film, Traven's book digs deep into the crevices of morality, and in every new situation, each character reveals his brand of integrity as they mine for gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains.

As the world is shaken by a virus, Shobhaa De – a writer who understands the human heart and how it beats – felt the need to document not just what she is going through personally but what the entire world is experiencing. And out of this need emerged many unique narratives ...

Lockdown Liaisons is a collection of short stories, from the varying perspectives of both men and women – young and old, brave and cowardly, cheerful and weighed down – each story a unique offering from a writer who understands how very fragile human relationships can be as they break, suffer and are redefined under trying circumstances.

In these pages of Lockdown Liaisons, we have the touching story of a special little boy and how he negotiates his intimate relationship with Ganpati during the lockdown. Then there are the deluded and feisty ruminations of a snobbish old lady who never understood why her husband left her for the woman that he did. In another story, entertaining and satirical, a single man struggles to manage life under lockdown with his young son and tries to forge a relationship with an attractive neighbour whose daughters go to school with his son. And then in 'In Malibu Mansions' we have a woman coping with losing her high profile job during the lockdown and the news that a neighbour has died by suicide by jumping off her balcony.

    Liber Amoris

    William Hazlitt

Liber Amoris is unlike anything Hazlitt wrote and probably like nothing you've come across before. On the face of it it tells the story of Hazlitt's infatuation with his landlords daughter. Hazlitt was middle aged and she young and pretty, a bit of a coquette from the sound of it. It turned out badly for Hazlitt and the book tells the story of this doomed love. Critics have always been divided about the merit of the piece. Even those who see its merit often feel more comfortable with his polished literary works, and perhaps rightly so. This is not a work to make you feel comfortable.I'd like to propose though that there is more to this as a work of art. It was the beginning of the era of the auto-biography that was arguably started by Rousseau in his Confessions. Going beyond Rousseau's mild self criticism, Hazlitt gives a ruthless self portrait (as well as an unsparing portrait of the object of his affections) of the weakness and mental turmoil that he experienced during the love affair. In this it is much closer to the theatre of cruelty of Antonin Artaud in which a pure artisitc truth is revealed through 'shattering a false reality that lies like a shroud over our perceptions'. Hazlitt had this in spades. So if you are looking for a polished stroll through the romantic sensibility this is not for you. This is about a close as you'll get to participating in a romantic car crash. A work of great art.Notes: Nick Duncan
