Sinopse

Charlotte Brontë's "Biographical Notes on the Pseudonymous Bells" offers a penetrating analysis of the literary contributions of her and her sisters' alter egos, Acton, Ellis, and Currer Bell. The text serves not only as a vindication of the artistic merit of the works produced under these pseudonyms but also as a critical examination of the barriers women faced in the literary world of the 19th century. Through a blend of personal insight and literary critique, Brontë employs an intimate yet analytical style, revealing the complexity of her sisters' identities and the societal constraints that necessitated their anonymity. This work situates itself firmly within the context of feminist literature, challenging contemporary norms around gender and authorship. Charlotte Brontë, one of the most significant figures in English literature, was acutely aware of the injustices faced by women writers in an era dominated by male authors. Her own experience of writing under a pseudonym reflects both her desire for literary acknowledgment and a yearning for autonomy. The "Biographical Notes" can be seen as a culmination of her personal and professional struggles, illuminating her respect for her sisters and their literary legacies while grappling with the frustrations of being a woman in a patriarchal society. Readers interested in literary history, feminism, or the intricate dynamics of sibling relationships will find "Biographical Notes on the Pseudonymous Bells" to be an essential addition to their libraries. Brontë's eloquent prose and keen insights not only honor her sisters' contributions but also provoke thoughtful discussions about the nature of authorship and identity. This work is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the complexities of 19th-century literature through a feminist lens.

For more than five decades, Pat Lipsky has been a leading figure in American color field painting. In loosely connected vignettes, this extraordinary book looks back on a life starting in 1970s SoHo: from her pioneering days juggling painting and single motherhood in a redesigned factory loft on Wooster Street; to Paris, where an enchanting friendship develops with the former director of the Louvre, Pierre Rosenberg; to her yearslong close friendship with legendary art critic Clement Greenberg; to a marvelous love affair with the charismatic art dealer Richard Bellamy. We glimpse Lipsky's first introduction to Cézanne as a child in 1950s Brooklyn and her studies with the mythic artist Tony Smith, who would become her mentor. Along the way we experience Lipsky's emergence at the forefront of her generation of painters.Brightening Glance offers a stunningly self-revealing portrait of the struggles and sacrifices, joys and excitement inherent in a modern painter's life, and captures the evergreen allure of New York's art world between 1970 and 2010. In stripped down, elegant prose, Lipsky summons a New York that no longer exists and ponders why we love (and hate) the art world. Ultimately, it's a story of a contemporary woman, a mother, and a painter, who dares a career in a field where only a handful of women have succeeded.

    1 MAN, 3,000 FIGHTS, 1,000 KNOCKOUTS

THE TRUE STORY OF BRITAIN'S MOST NOTORIOUS BOUNCER

Big Guy tells the story of Marcus Redwood, widely known as the UK's most notorious nightclub doorman. Over a career spanning around 40 years, he had an estimated 3,000 fights on the doors of clubs and pubs in Southern England, and knocked out approximately 1,000 men, never losing in a one-on-one confrontation throughout his entire door work.

Growing up on a small farm near the seaside town of Ramsgate, Marcus was subjected to vicious bullying at every school he attended. Angry and frustrated by the violence and intimidation he endured, he eventually resolved never to be bullied again and took up boxing.

After his first unofficial door work for the landlord of his local pub when he was 16 (in return for free beer), his formal door security work started at age 18 - no training, uniforms, radios or metal detectors. He worked during the day cutting down trees for the local council, and at night on the doors of clubs and pubs. He was 6ft2ins and weighed 19.5 stone in his prime.

Guns and knives were an ever-present danger to Marcus. Troublemakers who were thrown out of clubs often threatened to return with guns or knives; and some actually did. A stranger thrown out of a club might be a gangster or part of a gangster family. There was always a risk of revenge and retribution. Marcus was the target of London hitmen outside his home, who tried to shoot and kill him.

Well-known underworld friends and acquaintances during Marcus's career included the Kray twins, Freddie Foreman, Frankie Fraser and the 'celebrity gangster' Dave Courtney.

Looking back on his 40-year career on the doors, Marcus has not only been involved in thousands of fights, but he has also seen the best and worst of the club world, and even the tragic loss of life. He worked with some of the very best and very worst doormen. He has escaped death. His life story is not only fascinating and entertaining; it is an inspirational story of persistence battling against all the odds and living to tell the tale.

My sister spent her last years in a rest home and I visited her every Monday. She asked me, whether I had thought about writing another book, and I said yes - in fact I have the first two words: "Yes Sister"
When I got home, I thought I should get on and write the book, so my sister would be able to enjoy it. I wrote a chapter each week until the book was finished. I took each new chapter to my sister week by week. The topic of the book is my life story from the time I started nursing in 1947 until the birth of our third child in 1956.I added the pencil sketches later.
