  The Kingdom of Kongo emerged as one of the most powerful and centralized states in Central Africa. Its origins can be traced back to the early Bantu migrations, which spread agriculture, ironworking, and complex social structures across the region. By the 14th century, various smaller chiefdoms in present-day Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo began to coalesce under a single authority, forming what would become the Kingdom of Kongo. 
  The region’s fertile lands and access to major rivers facilitated both agriculture and trade. Kongo’s early economy relied on the cultivation of crops such as millet, sorghum, and bananas, as well as the production of iron tools and weapons. The abundance of natural resources allowed the ruling elite to accumulate wealth and expand their influence. As trade networks developed, Kongo became a center of commerce, linking the interior regions of Central Africa with coastal markets. 
  Kongo's social and political organization was highly structured. At the top of the hierarchy was the king, known as the Manikongo, who ruled from the capital, Mbanza Kongo. The Manikongo exercised authority over provincial rulers, who governed different regions of the kingdom. This system allowed for centralized administration while also granting local leaders autonomy in managing their territories. The kingdom was further divided into districts and villages, with a bureaucratic structure that ensured tax collection, military organization, and judicial functions.

  Piet Mondrian and artworks

  Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), who can be assigned to the school of classical modernism, was born in Amersfort, Netherlands. After studying in Amsterdam, he started his artist´s career in the impressionist style as a figure and landscape painter. His works from these years showed the influence of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) and of Fauvism, a French school from the beginning of the 20th century. When he traveled to Paris in 1911, he discovered Pablo Picasso´s works (1881-1973) and, with that, Cubism. He thereafter became a pioneer of abstract painting in the Netherlands. From the 1920s on, his paintings show a vertical and horizontal composition that, combined with the oppositions of blue, yellow, red, and noncolored spaces, turned into his trademark. His art was very appreciated in New York, where he spent his last years. Mondrian was not only a painter but also an art theoretician and cofounder of the art school De Stijl.

  The roots of urban renewal trace back to the early industrial revolution when cities began to experience rapid growth, creating overcrowded, unsanitary, and often unsafe living conditions. As populations swelled and cities expanded, poor housing, inadequate infrastructure, and environmental degradation became major issues. In response, urban planners and policymakers introduced initiatives aimed at reshaping cities. Early efforts to address these challenges were often driven by large-scale demolitions and redevelopment, aiming to modernize the urban landscape and provide more organized, planned environments. 
  Urban renewal has, over time, become an essential strategy for tackling issues such as blight, poverty, and crime in urban areas. The mid-20th century saw the rise of large federal and municipal programs dedicated to rebuilding cities. These projects included the demolition of old buildings, the construction of new housing complexes, and the development of public spaces and infrastructure. However, these initiatives were often met with mixed results. While some neighborhoods flourished, others experienced the negative effects of gentrification, displacing long-standing residents and altering the community's fabric.

  Like so many other cities of South America, Rio is an urban sprawl containing some truly stunning contrasts. Yet Rio comes alive, really, for only two things – soccer and the samba. According to tradition, founded by the Portuguese navigator André Gonçalves on 1 January 1502, declared the capital of Brazil by King John in 1763, Rio underwent major reorganization under President Alvarez at the beginning of the 20th century. Avenues and boulevards were laid out in a logic that added overall cohesion to the city. The greatest architects of the time and place were invited to make use of their talents. The houses merge with the tropical countryside, which features banana and sugar plantations lining the large bay that is dominated by the Pão de Açúcar – the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain. Other tourist delights include the Carioca aqueduct, the São Bento monastery and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Candelária which are close to each other, and the Quinta da Boa Vista public park. Rio is also famous for its wonderful beaches – such as those of Copacabana and Ipanema – on which the most beautiful women in the world tan themselves to a gorgeous golden colour wearing the skimpiest of costumes. But there is so much to catch the eye in this city, from the areas of avant-garde architecture to the miserable shanties of the favelas – all of which empty themselves of their inhabitants during Carnival, when costumes may again be both imaginative and leave little to the imagination, or when there is an important football match on at the Maracanã Stadium. Like its population, Rio is a compound of all the colours, all the shades, between black and white.
