Beschreibung

In "My Winter on the Nile," Charles Dudley Warner presents a vivid and engaging account of his time spent in the Nile region during the late 19th century. The book intricately blends travelogue with personal reflection, as Warner's keen observations of the landscape, culture, and people weave together a tapestry of life along the river. His prose is characterized by wit and charm, reflective of the literary realism that prevailed during his time, allowing readers to immerse themselves not only in the physical journey but also in the intellectual curiosity that marked an era of exploration and cultural exchange. Warner, an accomplished writer and editor, was greatly influenced by his experiences in the American literary and cultural landscape, as well as by contemporaries such as Mark Twain. This connection to Twain is particularly significant, as Warner'Äôs gentle irony and humor mirror the broader dialogues of American identity and exploration of foreign territories. His background in journalism and a love for literature imbued his narrative with insights and depth, revealing both the beauty and complexity of Egyptian life. Recommended for readers with a passion for travel literature and historical insights, "My Winter on the Nile" offers a rich exploration of 19th-century Egypt through Warner'Äôs discerning eyes. Scholars and enthusiasts alike will appreciate the nuanced commentary on cultural interactions and the stunning descriptions that capture the Nile's allure.

Peter Murtagh decided it was time to embark on 'The Great Retirement Project' - riding a motorbike from Tierra Del Fuego at the very southern tip of South America, to the most northerly point in Alaska, alone and without the pressure of any deadline.
Aged 69, just him, a tent, a bike and a sleeping bag.
En route, Peter explored magical, wonderful and extraordinarily out-of-the-way parts of our bruised world, met incredible people from all walks of life and observed a great swathe of the Americas. Travelling alone on the 45,000km journey allowed him a rare opportunity to disconnect from hectic daily life and to embrace the solitude, challenge and peace-of-mind of the road less travelled.
From Tip to Top is a story of optimism and hope and the adventure of a lifetime, and is a ground-level portrait of the Americas as we rarely see them.

The Paying Guest by George Gissing is a poignant exploration of love, sacrifice, and societal expectations in late 19th-century England. The story centers on the Harrow family, particularly Grace Harrow, who takes in lodgers to support her struggling household after her father’s death. When charming but penniless writer Edwin Claydon becomes their paying guest, romantic tensions arise between him and Grace. Their relationship is complicated by financial pressures, familial duty, and the rigid class norms of the time. Gissing skillfully examines the constraints placed on women like Grace, whose opportunities are limited by economic dependence and social conventions. As personal desires clash with practical realities, the characters grapple with moral dilemmas and the compromises demanded by survival. The Paying Guest offers a sensitive critique of Victorian society, highlighting the quiet struggles of ordinary lives bound by circumstance and tradition.

The Tangut people, an ethnic group of uncertain origins, gradually emerged as a distinct force in northwestern China. They are believed to have descended from the Qiang tribes, a collection of nomadic and semi-nomadic groups that roamed the Tibetan Plateau and the Ordos region. Over centuries, they migrated and settled in what is now modern-day Ningxia and parts of Gansu and Inner Mongolia, where they established communities and developed a unique cultural identity. Their position between the Tibetan Plateau, the Central Asian steppes, and the Chinese heartland made them an important intermediary in regional affairs.
The Tangut rise to prominence was influenced by their interactions with the dominant powers of the region. The Tibetan Empire, which controlled vast areas of western China until its decline in the ninth century, played a significant role in shaping early Tangut culture and governance. The collapse of the Tibetan Empire created a power vacuum that allowed smaller groups like the Tangut to assert their independence. At the same time, the weakening of the Tang Dynasty left northern China vulnerable to fragmentation, further enabling the Tangut to carve out a space for themselves.
By the tenth century, the Tangut had developed into a formidable military and political entity, leveraging their strategic location along trade routes to establish economic and diplomatic ties with neighboring states. They maintained relations with the Song Dynasty to the east, the Tibetan remnants to the south, and the nomadic Khitan Liao Empire to the north. These interactions not only enriched Tangut society but also introduced them to a variety of political models, from the bureaucratic governance of the Chinese dynasties to the tribal confederations of the steppe.

Part field guide, part history, part ornithology primer, and altogether fun.

Fact: Pigeons are amazing, and until recently, humans adored them. We've kept them as pets, held pigeon beauty contests, raced them, used them to carry messages over battlefields, harvested their poop to fertilize our crops—and cooked them in gourmet dishes. Now, with A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching, listeners can rediscover the wonder. Equal parts field guide and quirky history, it covers behavior: Why they coo; how they flock; how they preen, kiss, and mate (monogamously); and how they raise their young (on chunky pigeon milk). Anatomy and identification, from Birmingham Roller to the American Giant Runt to the Scandaroon. Birder issues, like what to do if you find a baby pigeon stranded in the park. And our lively shared story together, including all the things we've taught them—Ping-Pong, for example. "Rats with wings?" Think again.

Pigeons coo, peck and nest all over the world, yet most of us treat them with indifference or disdain. So Rosemary Mosco, a bird-lover, science communicator, writer, and cartoonist, is here to give the pigeon's image a makeover, and to help every town- and city-dweller get closer to nature by discovering the joys of birding through pigeon-watching.
